"SELECTED MEN JOIN SERVICE OF UNCLE SAM THIS EVENING

Final Arrangements Made for Demonstration Tomorrow Morning

CITIZENS WILL PARADE

Calumet's second quota of seventy-two selected men and eight alternates will enter the service of the United States at 7 o'clock this evening, when in response to local draft board, they will assemble at the Laurium town hall for roll call.  There will be another roll call at 7'olock tomorrow morning, just prior to their departure for Camp Custer at Battle Creek to enter the training camp, and at 7:45 , fifteen minutes before the departure of the train, which is to bear them away, there will be a final roll call at the Mineral Range station.

Calumet and Keweenaw county are looking forward with interest to the big demonstration tomorrow morning in honor of the new army men.  This entire north end of the district will unite in the demonstration, which promises to be the biggest of its kind ever undertaken here.  As far as numbers participating are concerned, it undoubtedly will vie with the Citizen's Alliance demonstrations, the Preparedness parade and the demonstration on the departure of the Calumet Engineers.

The Keweenaw county contingent of twenty-six men will reach Laurium shortly after 7 o'clock tomorrow morning and immediately afterwards, with the Calumet delegation headed by the Kilties' band, the parade will start for the depot.  The Calumet and Red Jacket delegations will meet the parade at the armory, en route.

The order of the parade will include the Kilties band, selected men, Spanish War veterans, infantry and calvary organizations of the Home Guard in uniform but on foot, high school boys and the public.

The Calumet-Laurium quota will be in charge of John MacDonald.

En route, dinner will be served the men at Marquette .

13 NOT HEARD FROM

The only uncertainty for the local draft board to contend with today is the fact that thirteen of the men have not yet returned to the board the pink cards sent them with the request that they advise the board as to whether or not they desire sleeping accommodations tonight and meals served.  All of the other men have responded and have been granted permission to remain at their homes.  If the thirteen who have not responded do not desire to remain at home as long as possible, their wants will be cared for at the Palace Hotel.  If they fail entirely to answer the summons, they will be reported to the sheriff and the adjutant general tomorrow as deserters and will be proceeded against as such.

YOUTH FALLS 400 FEET TO DEATH

Henry Jarvi, Aged 16, Victim-- Narrow Escape for Workmate

Henry Jarvi, age 16, a drill boy employed by the Calumet & Hecla Mining company, was instantly killed last night at 7:30 o'clock when he fell from the cage in No. 14 shaft and George Eskola, also a drillboy, had a miraculous escape from the same fate. Jarvi, Eskola and Walter Petlewski were going underground in the cage on the night shift with a load of drills. One of the drills protruded from the cage, according to the testimony, and hit the side of the casing, the impact throwing Jarvi down the shaft. As he was falling he grabbed Eskola who was sitting beside him and pulled him from the cage into the shaft.

Eskola was found about fifty feet beneath the twentieth level unconscious and Jarvi's body was found at the 24th level. Eskola is unable to explain how he fell from the cage but Petlewski, testifying at the inquest this morning, said he saw Jarvi grab him and pull him into the shaft. Eskola's injuries, he testified, consisted of a scratch on the back and his head was bumped.

The verdict inquest was "that the deceased came to his death by falling down the cage while employed in taking down drills"

The jury impannlled by Coroner Fisher, was somposed of Reuben Northy, W. Lebeau, Frank Tucker, W. S. Uren, Joseph Imbach and T. H. Berryman.

Jarvi was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Jarvi of 4064 Acorn street, Yellow Jacket.

Calumet Resident Found Dead at Home

Steve Petlewsy, about 70 years old, was found dead at 6'clock last night at his home on Seventh street. He lived alone in a house to the rear of a dwelling occupied by George Antonette, 104 Seventh street. Antonette noticed that no smoke came from the chimney of Petlewsky's house yesterday afternoon and as the door was locked. Antonette called Chief of Police Dan MacDonald.

Chief MacDonald found Petlewsky's body in the cellar, just below an open trap dor in the kitchen. A pile of kindling was on the kitchen floor, and it was believed that Petlewsky suffered a heart attack after getting the kindling from the cellar, falling back into the cellar.

Coroner David Osborn investigated and pronounced it accidental death. No inquest will be held. The body is at Ryan's Funeral Home.

Mr. Petlewsky was an old resident of Calumet, and at one time was employed in a saloon operated by his brother on Oak street. No immediate relatives survive. Severall nieces and nephews survive in Milwaukee and Detroit.
