I have been searching for my great granddad William James & his 2nd wife Alice – I can’t find their whereabouts in 1891!! – I know he travelled around fairgrounds with a fish & chip van & Shove halfpenny - so guess he must have been travelling at the time of the census. Whilst I was searching my friend found your site. My great great grandma is Johanna James (nee Rowe- daughter of Martin & Elizabeth Harvey Rowe). I have a brother Martin James. We never knew until this year that our names had been carried down generations – it was a lovely surprise!! I have one daughter Isobelle Alice and only found last night that my Great Uncle Martin had a daughter called Isobella . I will read through your trees and if I can add anything (which I doubt ) I will mail you). I can send you the latest generations of the Derbyshire branch!!

I have had many sleepless nights trying to locate his baptism as there are several others around that time that just didn't seem to connect with the information he had stated in his census entries. I have accumulated quite a bit of data on the family history and for information prior to the 18th century I have relied very much on the 'Pellows of Penryn' by Dr E.F.Pellowe, 1964. Now that the Cornwall parish registers have been digitized and are online, it has been wonderful to cross check his data and fill in many dates, and add some bits as well.

I am the direct descendent of Peter James, the last entry in your "James James and Elizabeth Kitto" list. Peter was the adventurous one migrating to New Zealand in 1874 with his young family. My great grandfather Paul was his second son. Paul left NZ at the age of 22 and started our branch of the James family in Australia.

I Your website is very interesting. According to a family tree compiled by my great aunt, my Hammill ancestors came to the United States from cornwall in the early 1830's. It states that John W. "Jack" Hammill was born April 1812 in Cornwall england, and came here in the early 1830's with his brother William. I have always wondered if there were Hammill's still currently living in england.

I have been tracing my family of Smithams for many years and I got stuck at William who married Jane Warren on 16 Oct 1803. I presumed the parents were John and Phillis but had not confirmed things from there. I am absolutely over the moon to see your fantastic website which confirms everything I have which follows through from John and Phillis, William and Jane Warren having Matthew Smythram 1815 who married Jane Hockin and had John Smethram b. 1845 who did marry Elizabeth Ann Oates and hence called the son Nicholas Oates Smetherem. b. 1877 Dukinfielld, Chesthire who ultimately married Jane Connor in June qtr 1906 in Whitehaven. She was from Ireland. They had my grandma Ruth Smitham who married John Edward Huddart in Whitehaven who had my mother Audrey nee Huddart who married my father Colin Stechman and coming down to me Carol Stechman. I will get together everything I can for you and send you full details shortly but just to say that I can't thank you enough for all your hard work. Although my mum is a Huddart, she was brought up by her grandma Jane nee Connor after Nicholas died and my great Uncle Stanley Smitham who was a lovely man and a miner (of course) in Whitehaven.

You have a great website. My grandmother was Eva Hammill, daughter of David Hammill and Grace Toy Chinn. David (1859/1911) and Grace (1858/1929) came to New Zealand in 1878. They settled in Oamaru in the South Island where David worked as a miner They had 6 children all born in New Zealand. David's brothers, James and Willliam Hammill went to Australia, Richard and Herbert went to America and his sister, Beatrice, who married Richard Hamilton Philpott, also came to New Zealand.

I am completely new to researching family history. My four grandparents' names were Frank Harding Ansell and Henrietta nee Andrewartha on my father's side and William Davy Thomas and Ada Mary nee Berryman (?? Berriman etc.) on my mother's side. I have researched a bit of the Andrewartha family and a bit of the Berryman family because they are less common names and hence easier. My grandfather William Davy Thomas' mother was a Vingoe (one of the names in your extensive list). I also notice a 'Luke' connection which I have come across in the Andrewartha part of my research. I also recognise a load of other surnames in your list. It seems to me that all of these families are / were effectively related to one another! People didn't move very far, I guess, to find a wife / husband before the days of the railways and then not very much well into the 20th. Century. Thank you for sharing all your extensive work.

Comments:	The father, Joseph Dutch, of my great granmother, Eliza Cardew Dutch, married Martha Symonds James, March 13th 1815. Martha was born in Helston on 26th December 1788 Martha's father was Richard James, born Breage on 23rd October 1763. Her mother, I believe to be Mary Shugg, born St Ives, 19th Oct 1763. Richard's father, I believe to be Joseph James, born Breage on 16th March 1734. Symonds was another family in Breage and Marha's parents obviously wanted to keep the name alive. In the same way my great grandmother was given a middle name of Cardew, another Breage family though by the 19th century there was only one family there. Congrats on an excellent piece of research.

Sarah Ann Mullis was born into the Carter family from Newquay - also my family! Sarah's mother Elizabeth Carter was sister to Albert Carter - my gt.grandfather. Sarah married Charles Goyen and they can be found on the 1910 and 1920 census for Cook, (Chicago) Illinois. The family went over through Ellis Island at various dates from 1907 - 1910 from Southampton.

He came from Cornwall to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA in the early 1800's. He worked for a time in the mines there then moved to Minnesota to work in the iron mines. It is most frustrating to have no record of his arrival in the US but I shall keep looking.

Comments:	Great site. Well researched, simply laid out and easy to follow. I was looking on behalf of David Hammill of Dubbo for his Cornish family who came to South Australia in 1847. I will pass this information and website details onto him. His line appears to come via Bennet Hammell who married Izable, James who married Margaret Hingston, to John who married Martha Luke in Redruth in 1794, Joshua christened 1814 in Redruth. Joshua married an Elizabeth (possibly Harris) c 1833 and the couple emigrated to Australia in 1847. David is researching the Australian branch. I only wish my Orchards/Wills/Craze from Illogan tapped into such a terrific site.

Comments:	In 1940 along with a number of other children from my school in the east end of London, I was evacuated to St Mawgan. I stayed with a family named Force, but one of my friends at that time, John Baker, was billeted on the farm of Farmer Rowe. During the summer of 1940 St Mawgan RAF aerodrome came under the attention of the Luftwaffe and the Force family thought it better if I returned to London, which I did. I recently discovered a website which was a day to day diary of the Battle of Britain and mention was made of RAF St Eval but not St Mawgan. This made me interested to find out more about St Mawgan and I came across your website whilst "trawling" through a number of pages of links to St.Mawgan. Comments:	Thank you for an interesting site. As the great-great grand-daughter of Elizabeth Smetham of Leigh in Lancashire (b 1831), who in turn was great granddaughter of James Smetham (m c 1741). I am trying to establish whether the Lancashire branch of the family came to the county from elsewhere. Smethams don’t seem to have been in Lancashire earlier than the mid to late 18thC. I wonder if they came to the North West of England from Cornwall, where the name seems to be a place name. If you happen to have any information on Smethams who left Cornwall, I would be very grateful.

Comments:	Glad to have found this site as my father Norman Carrivick had tried to find out about the name many years ago and had traced it back to 1327 when the name was originally Crou.In that year a franc Crou actually had to pay a tax of 12pence! Comments:	I have been tracing my family of Smithams for many years and I got stuck at William who married Jane Warren on 16 Oct 1803. I presumed the parents were John and Phillis but had not confirmed things from there. I am absolutely over the moon to see your fantastic website which confirms everything I have which follows through from John and Phillis, William and Jane Warren having Matthew Smythram 1815 who married Jane Hockin and had John Smethram b. 1845 who did marry Elizabeth Ann Oates and hence called the son Nicholas Oates Smetherem. b. 1877 Dukinfielld, Chesthire who ultimately married Jane Connor in June qtr 1906 in Whitehaven. She was from Ireland. They had my grandma Ruth Smitham who married John Edward Huddart in Whitehaven who had my mother Audrey nee Huddart who married my father Colin Stechman and coming down to me Carol Stechman. I will get together everything I can for you and send you full details shortly but just to say that I can't thank you enough for all your hard work. Although my mum is a Huddart, she was brought up by her grandma Jane nee Connor after Nicholas died and my great Uncle Stanley Smitham who was a lovely man and a miner (of course) in Whitehaven.
