Thanks to the efforts of Robert R. Freeman, we know that the ancestor who goes back the farthest in our line, so far, is Stephen Freeman and his wife Hannah Astwood and her father John. We find Stephen in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut in 1645; his father-in-law having been there since 1639. In 1667 we find Stephen as one of the founding settlers of Newark, Essex County. In our line, we then find Stephen's grandson, a Stephen son of Samuel, residing in Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey in 1742. It appears that within those years of the late 1660's and early 1700's the family begins to disperse througout the land.

Progress is being made in research through the use of DNA. The Freeman DNA Project is very active and all FREEMAN surnamed males are urged to participate. The Project could really use some participation from those male surnames who believe they are connected to our Freemans from Connecticut and New Jersey.
