There is little that we know 'for sure' of James FLATT. Several cousins are researching around this data: There are two James Flatts with a son Josiah in the England 1851 (Norfolk) census both married to a Mary and both having at least three children with the names Josiah, William, and Phoebe. The James born in Great Moulton shows Josiah born about 1834, which matches Josiah's USA immigration papers, while the James born in Thorpe shows Josiah born about 1840. We think he is the one born in Great Moulton, Norfolk, England. The family is certain Josiah immigrated to Canada with a Jonathan and James Flatt and we believe they are brothers or cousins. We do know from records they are close and that they settled in Simcoe County, Ontario. After that, large portions of all three families ended up in North Dakota while large portions of all three stayed in Ontario.
Progress is being made in research through the use of DNA. The Flatt DNA Project is very active and all FLATT surnamed males are urged to participate. A link to the DNA Project is on the right column of this page.
I would very much like to add any appropriate Flatt genealogy
to this database/website. Just send me an email with the data. I would only ask that your source material be included where possible.
