Hiram Herbert RUST69 was born on 30 April 1837 in Huntingdon, Quebec, Canada. He died in Ellenburg Depot, Clinton County, New York. He was buried in Sheldon Cemetery, Ellenburg Depot, Clinton County, New York.
Hiram enlisted on 30 Sep 1861 when he was 24 yrs old. He was discharged as the result of disease on 20 May 1862. During his enlistment he served at Pohick Church, VA. where the 16th NYS Vols were mainly engaged in the building of Ft. Lyon. As it would appear Hiram's only action in the Civil War was at the Battle of West Point, VA, on 7 May 1862. Hiram's company along with Co. G of the 16th New York Vols were ordered out to the picket line in relief of Companies A, B and K of the 16th. When abt. 9am Companies F and G were met by the advancing forces of Gen. J. B. Hood's Brigade of Whiting's Division. Being out numbered they retreated. Six enlisted men were killed and 11 men were wounded; among the wounded was Capt. Newton Martin Curtis.
Hiram served with Heintzelman's Brigade, Division of the Potomac, 30 Sep 1861 - 13 March 1862, Slocum's Brigade, Franklin's Division, 1st Corps, Army of the Potomac, 13 March 1862 - May 1862 and then perhaps with, 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 6th Corps, Army of the Potomac for a brief time until his discharge on 20 May 1862.
