Third Generation

20. John PETERSON2,3 was born on 22 August 1701 in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He died after 1765. The Society of Mayflower Descendants and The Peterson Family of Duxbury both have John's death date after 1761. From The Peterson Family of Duxbury, Massachusetts: "From deeds it is known that John Peterson lived at various times at Duxbury, Middleborough, Pembroke, and Rochester, Massachusetts., and also at Richmond and Scituate, Rhode Island.
The Mayflower Descendants has John and Ruth's marriage at Kingston.
On 9 January 1735, John Peterson of Rochester, husbandman, sold land in Middleborough to John Thomas.
At the December 1735 Court, Stephen Andrews sued John Peterson of Rochester or Duxborough, housewright, for debt.
On 27 November 1756 John Peterson of Richmond, Kings County, Rhode Island sold land in Middleborough where he had dwelled to John Bishop. Wife Ruth Peterson relinquished her right of dower.
On 18 April 1759 John Peterson of Richmond gave 80 acres to son Ichabod.
The Peterson Family of Duxbury indicates in 1765, at Scituate, Rhode Island, that John Peterson conveyed land to his son Silvanus. Another record indicates that on 24 June 1765 John Peterson of the town of Scituate in the county of Providence in the Colony of Rhode Island sold a parcel of cedar swamp lying between Middleborough and Rochester to son Silvanus Peterson of Middleborough. Beyond Ichabod and Silvanus, both records indicate none of his children have yet to be directly attributed to John. It is, however, beyond doubt that the Peterson marriages recorded at Middleborough were those of his children, for his family was the only Peterson family resident there at that time; and the same applies to the Peterson marriages recorded at Richmond and Scituate, R.I. and at Rochester. Furthermore, there is no possible place elsewhere for these children.
The children were probably all born at Middleborough. In corroboration of the theory that the children named here (Writer Note: Silvanus, Hope, Lusa, Hannah, Content, Lydia, Zilpha, Nathan, Ichabod, Patience, Lemuel, Rhoda, and Ruth) were brothers and sisters and were children of John and Ruth (Delano) Peterson, it may be noted that Lydia, Zilpha, and Rhoda were residents of Pelham, that the sole surviving grandchild of Rhoda Edson testifies that her grandmother was one of a large number of sisters, that another granddaughter left a memorandum stating that Rhoda's mother was a Delano, and that the unmarried sister, Ruth, lived with the mother of the writer of this memorandum. Furthermore, Rhoda Edson had a son named Delano Edson. Abiezer Edson, Jr., was a cousin of Peter, Isaac, and Nathan Bennett, his mother, Jael Bennett, having been a daughter of Peter Bennett. He and his Bennett cousins were descended from Mayflower ancestors through the wife of Peter Bennett, who was Priscilla Howland, daughter of Isaac and Elisabeth (Vaughn)." (Writer Note: Not recorded by W. B. Browne, but noted is that Lydia was married to a Peter Bennett.)"
The Society of Mayflower Descendants publication records, "He was of Rochester in 1755-1756 when he purchased 525 acres Richmond RI; of Richmond RI 18 April 1759 when he gave for love to his son Ichabod 80 acres, and on 7 Sept. 1761 when he sold 444 acres for 18,000 pounds (sic). We have found no probate nor distribution of estate."
From Edward Doty Of The Mayflower (in addition to some of the same data in the Petersons of Duxbury above), "On 1 May 1754 John Peterson and Seth Randall of Rochester divided joint property."

John PETERSON and Ruth DELANO were married on 21 August 1726 in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Ruth DELANO2,3,20 was born on 25 May 1707 in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. She died after 27 November 1756 in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. From The Peterson Family of Duxbury, "Ruth is the daughter of Jonathan (Thomas, Philip) and Hannah (Doty) and a descendant of John Alden and Edward Doty of the Mayflower."
The Mayflower Descendants has Ruth and John's marriage as being in Kingston, Massachusetts, 21 Aug 1726.
