333. Abel N. PETERSON11 was born on 6 October 1827 in Windsor, Windsor County, Vermont. He died on 2 May 1910 in Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa. He was buried in May 1910 in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa. One source has his birth place as Barnet, Caledonia County, Vermont. The Nashua Reporter, May 5, 1910 "Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Peterson of Plainfield, Miss Edith Peterson of Iona, and Miss Elsie Peterson of Deerfield, attended the funeral of their uncle, A.N. Peterson." Obituary: THE NASHUA REPORTER, Thursday May 5, 1910 An Old Resident Passes Away Mr. A.N. Peterson passed away at his home in the suburbs of this city, Monday evening at 8:45 o’clock after a brief illness. Mr. Peterson had been in failing health for several weeks past, caused by a general breaking down of the system and for the past nine days was confined to his bed. Everything possible was done by those who cared for him to alleviate his sufferings, but the last few days of his illness were filled with intense pain, and it was not until he closed his eyes in eternal sleep that he was at rest. Abel N. Peterson was born at Windsor, (Windsor County), Vermont, October 6, 1827, and was the second youngest of a family of ten children, and was the only surviving member of that family. In 1854, the family moved to Rockford, ILL, where he lived until 1865, when he came to Nashua, Iowa where he spent the remainder of his life. He was thrice married, the first marriage being to Emily Nutting, February 5, 1866, who died May 6, 1891; the second to Susan Springstead, May 10, 1892, she dying October 20, 1906; and the third to Elizabeth (Bradley) Seifert March 22, 1907, who with two stepchildren survive him. For forty five years the deceased had lived among us, and during these many years, he has always been regarded as an honorable and upright citizen, a man who attended strictly to his own affairs. He came here when the country was new and endured all the hardships of a pioneer life. He was a tiller of the soil, and while successful in accumulating considerable prosperity, it was through hard work and economy that he did so. He also numbered among those who gave a liberal amount toward organizing the Nashua Power Co., and the Nashua Woolen Mill Co., several years ago, which at that time, gave promise as being an advancement to the interests of the town. The funeral was held at the late home Wednesday at 2 P.M., Rev. Burch conducting the services, and the remains were laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery. Contributed by Karen Giblin. Abel N. PETERSON and Emily N. NUTTING were married on 5 February 1866 in Chickasaw County, Iowa. Emily N. NUTTING11 was born about 1823 in Vermont. She died on 6 May 1891 in Chickasaw County, Iowa. She was buried in May 1891 in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa. Abel N. PETERSON and Susan BRIGGS were married on 10 May 1892. Susan BRIGGS11 was born in January 1838 in New York. She was buried about 1906 in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa. She died on 20 October 1906 in Chickasaw County, Iowa. Her obituary indicates a daughter Ruth LaShelle but there is no documentation has to which husband is Ruth's father. Obituary: The Nashua Reporter, Thursday, October 25, 1906 DEATH OF MRS. A.N. PETERSON Mrs. A.N. Peterson died at her home, in the suburbs of this city, on Saturday morning at 6:40 o’clock after suffering for many months with heart trouble, which terminated in dropsy. Miss Susan Briggs was born........ (This portion is indecipherable. The surname of her first husband was “Osborn, whom she married)..........at Rockford, ILL., and May 5, 1862 he died. September 4, 1864, she was united in marriage to William Springstead. In the year 1881, they moved to Shannon, Ill, where Mr. Springstead passed away, June 12, 1886. Her third marriage was to A.N. Peterson who survives her. She was the mother of two children, Mrs. Ruth LaShelle of Rockford, Ill, and Henry Osborn of Shannon, Ill, who mourn her death. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Don Osborn and Miss Pearl LaShelle. The deceased was well known in this community, although she was a woman who remained closely at home, devoting herself to her household duties. She was a fond mother and when sickness befell her, her daughter, Mrs. LaShelle, was called to her bedside, and she cared for her day and night, until the sufferer was at rest. Her son and granddaughter were also with her during her final hours on earth, but the latter did not arrive until after his mother had lost consciousness. The funeral was held at the residence at 10 A.M. Monday, and the remains were laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery. Contributed by Karen Giblin. Portions of Susan's obituary were indecipherable including where she was born, and the name of her first husband. She was survived by a son, Henry Osborn, indicating her first marriage implied in the portions which could be read, and she married, secondly, William Springstead. According to the 1900 census, Susan (Briggs) Peterson was born in January 1838 in the state of New York. In 1850, Susan Briggs, age 12, resided in New York City, daughter of Frederick and Eliza Briggs. Abel N. PETERSON and Elizabeth Mary BRADLEY were married on 22 March 1907. Elizabeth Mary BRADLEY11 was born on 2 March 1855 in Minnesota. She died on 1 December 1935 in Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa. THE NASHUA REPORTER, Wednesday, December 4, 1935 A PIONEER MOTHER IS CALLED BY DEATH Mrs. Elizabeth Peterson, 80, answers The Final Summons of Death Funeral at 2 today Mrs. Elizabeth Peterson, a highly respected resident of this community for more than 45 years, passed away Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O.D. Yetter and husband, after an illness of considerable duration, death being due to the infirmities of age. During the past few years, she had made her home with her daughter and husband, where she had every care possible from a devoted daughter and son-in-law. Elizabeth Mary Peterson was born March 2, 1855, the daughter of Richard and Eliza Bradley, pioneer homesteaders in Minnesota, her parents coming to Minnesota from London, England. Her girlhood days were spent in the pioneer woods country in Minnesota, and she received her education and religious training from her parents, who were devout Christians. She came to Iowa with her brother-in-law, Henry Page and wife in 1875, and in 1879 she was married to Charley Joseph Seifert at Nashua, who passed away June 16, 1900. To this union two children were born, Francis P. Yetter of Nashua, and Karl Richard Seifert of Staples, Minn. In 1907 she was married to Abel N. Peterson in Nashua, who passed away in 1910. Mrs. Peterson was the last of a family of 12 children by the original marriage of her mother. She is survived by a half-sister, Mrs. Rolla Mills (?) of Plainview, Minn. There is also a half-brother, now deceased. Funeral services will be held at the Congregational Church, Wednesday at 2 P.M. in charge of Revs. Wm. Kent and H.J. Fairlie, and interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Herman Taylor, E.G. Meier, E.S. Taylor, Chas. Ligget, A.C. Davidson and G.E. Ellison. Contributed by Karen Giblin.
