bullet Alice L. HATCH was born on 17 Jun 1872 in Lighthouse, IL. (208) She died in Nov 1967 in St. Petersburg, FL. (209)
Aunt Alice lived in Berkeley with a great view of San Francisco Bay. I visited here there a couple of times in the late 1940's. At that time, I believe, Willis was with Pan American Airways and worked at their headquarters on Treasure Island. Later, we visited him and his wife, Charity (who was one of 3 sisters, the others being Faith and Hope), at their home up in the hills above Redwood City. They had daughters but I don't recall how many. That was in the 1950s, and we lost touch since. Kenneth and Willis were, of course, first cousins. Doree got out of a bad marriage and moved to Florida where Aunt Alice joined her. My sister visited them there and sort of kept in touch with Doree over the years. (Source: Wendell Hatch WILSON, nephew of Alice.)

Your treatise about Alice was only wrong in one part--she only lived in California while attending Stanford University. She often told the story about how she went to Stanford with Herbert Hoover, who dated one of her friends, but that she never thought he would amount to much and was surprised when he became President. The other story was about her trip from LaGrange to California on a long, long train trip. There was no heat in the cars and no food so the passengers got off at each stop and often bought food from Indians who lined the roads. She was well equipped to take such trips and for a young girl to attend and graduate from Stanford in the l890's was no small feat in itself. Alice, or Bama was a force to be reckoned with. She and her husband, Robert Neil Clover moved from LaGrange, Ill to Peoria Ill when Miriam was starting Bradley so that she would not have to live in a dorm. Robert Neil (Papa) was a traveling Salesman for Keystone Wire located in Peoria. Alice meanwhile organized the Peoria chapter of PEO and served on the first committee to get the vote for women, ending up as the Peoria League of Women voters. As a grandmother, she was efficient but such a disciplinarian that she didn't come across as loving. She ruled with an iron hand and would brook no interference. I thought she was a lousy cook, indifferent other than to put food on the table and often threw anything leftover in one pot and stirred it up and served it. (Source: Jean (Becker) Blessman, granddaughter of Alice, in an email, 14 Feb 1999)

Alice and Robert met in high school in Oregon, IL. When she graduated and went to Stanford in CA, Robert sent her a two seater bike. She stayed with her sister Hattie and husband Merrit Taylor (a professor at Stanford). Alice and Robert were married by Alice's father in the M.E. Church in Oregon, IL. According to Aunt Doree, Bama (Alice's nickname by Jean & Janet's kids) did her china painting in 1904 in La Grange--it was popular with all her friends then. She also painted the Horse Fair picture when she was in high school--with no lessons in painting. She did a charcoal dog picture--Dignity and Impudence--as a young woman. She also did oils, but there are no copies remaining.

BIOGRAPHY
Alonzo attended Newbury Seminary in Newbury, Vermont, and lived in a third-floor room of the McKinstry home, located within sight of the seminary. There he met and courted Clara. They were married in the Methodist-Episcopal. Church, located next to the Seminary.

Alonzo was an Methodist-Episcopal. minister. In 1863 he took as his first assignment in Marlow, New Hampshire,at a church with a membership of eleven families. Alonzo was paid $450 annually.

Alonzo and Clara lived in the parsonage and began their family until 1868 when they moved to Lighthouse, Illinois, located in Ogle County, south of Oregon and southeast of Daysville. There he and Clara established a "neat homestead of 80 acres with good improvements," and raised their children to adulthood. Alonzo continued to serve his community as a parson. Meetings were held in the Canfield schoolhouse until a schoolhouse was built in Chana and a Methodist circuit as established there.

It had been a tradition in Clara's family that all the children receive a proper education. In fact, the principal reason that Clara's father moved from Bethel to Newbury was to assure his children a proper education at the Newbury Seminary. Alonzo and Clara continued this tradition by educating their children at Mount Morris College, a college located in Ogle County across the Rock River from their home. By the 1890s, all their children were educated. In 1932, a fire destroyed Mount Morris College. Parents: Sanford HATCH and Sophia LEWIS.

He enlisted in the Revolutionary War when he was sixteen or seventeen, and served under several officers from 1775 to 1777. He took part in the battle of White Plains in 1776, Bennington in 1777, and in both battles with Burgoyne in 1777. At one time he was mistaken for a deserter when he came home to look after the crops and stayed too long. He received a pension for his military service, a pension that passed onto his wife at his death.

In 1794, Asa purchased one-half of lot #10 in the 4th range of lots in Williamstown, Vermont, where he took his family and lived to his death. Asa fathered and raised 23 children. He and his family endured many of the hardships and privations of pioneering families of Vermont. It is told that he had so many children that there were not enough shoes, so when it was necessary for them to go outside on cold days to chop wood for the fire, they would take a couple of hot chips to stand on while chopping the wood.

bullet Jonathan HATCH(240) was born in 1624/25 in England. He died on 10 Dec 1710 in Falmouth, MA. Jonathan, the only son of Thomas was born in about 1625 in England and came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony with his father in 1634. Jonathan and his sister Lydia were raised by Thomas's second wife, Grace (Willis) Hatch. It appears the children did not get along well with their stepmother, for they did not live much at their father's home. As a youth, Jonathan was more spirited than others in the community. His father may have believed that a military career might help direct the youthful energies of his son, for at the age of 12, Jonathan began a military apprenticeship with Lieutenant Davenport of Salem, MA. Jonathan "chafed and fretted" and, after two years, could endure it no longer. He deserted and made his way to Boston, intent on seeking passage by boat to Yarmouth where his father resided. There in 1640 he was arrested as a fugitive from military service, was censured, severely flogged, and committed as a slave to the same Lt. Davenport. That same year Jonathan was accused of slander, a charge he was found innocent of by the court in Yarmouth.

In 1641 when his father moved to Barnstable, Jonathan remained in Yarmouth. Having no land, residence, or evidence of an occupation, he was arrested on the charge of vagrancy. He was again censured, whipped, and sent to Lt. Davenport. This sentence was probably not carried out, for a year later the court appointed a guardian for him.

In 1645 he was one of four men from Barnstable who, along with men from other townships, went forth in an expedition against the Narragansett Indians. In 1652 Jonathan was again in Court, charged with "furnishing an Indian with a gun, power and shot." In a 1653 town meeting, he applied for and received a land allotment where, a year later, he built his home. All the good land had been previously allotted, so Jonathan's land was in that part of Cape Cod that was an unbroken wilderness inhabited by the Indians. There were no white settlers with several miles and the wigwam of the Chief of the Massapees was but a mile away. Yet, Jonathan expressed his satisfaction with the allocation to the town officials.

Oysters were abundant in the waters nearby, and Jonathan and his family would pick many barrels and send them to market. The shells of the oysters were burned in kilns to make quick lime, used for building purposes.

He was declare a free man and was given voting rights in the township. He died in Falmouth in 1710, aged 84, and was honored by the community where he lived for the last fifty years.
