BIOGRAPHY
On 13 Sep 1861 and at age 17. Alexander Ford enlisted as a Private in Company K of the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His regiment, under the command of Captain Orpeus S. Woodward, moved to Washington, DC, and joined the Army of the Potomac under the command of General McClellan. As a reward for their expertise and soldierly bearing, his regiment was awarded the honor of wearing the "Chasseur de Vincennes" Zouave uniform. It was quickly discovered that this uniform was impractical for field use and were packed away shortly thereafter.

Alexander and his regiment participated in the Peninsula campaign, engaging in their first action at Hanover Courthouse, located just north of Richmond, VA, on 27 May 1862. Alexander became ill or injured and spent from May 1862 through Feb 1963 in the hospital, after which he rejoined his regiment.

In July of 1863, after Alexander had returned from the hospital, his regiment, as part of the Fifth Army Corps under the command of Major General George Sykes, participated in the Battle of Gettysburg where it helped hold the key Union position on Little Round Top.

In the spring of 1864, Alexander's regiment participated in the Wilderness Campaign. On 5 May 1864, the first day of the battle, his regiment sustained 86 casulaties, including his regimental commander. The Wilderness Campaign continued with the Battle of Spotsylvania on 8 May 1864 when his regiment was ordered to take what was believed to be a lightly-defended Confederate position on Laurel Hill. When his regiment crossed the open ground at the foot of the hill, it immediately came under fire from skirmishers posted at the crest of the hill. His regiment pushed on, but when they reached the brow of the hill they found the hill was defended by an entire enemy brigade behind breastworks of logs and rails whose strength was four times that of the 83rd. His regiment charged the enemy position with fixed bayonets and, in a furious hand-to-hand engagement, drove the Confederates from their lines. The Confederate counterattack was just as fierce and his regiment was forced to retreat from Laurel Hill, back to the safety of main Union lines. Alexander's company suffered 24 casualties. On that day, Alexander was reported as missing in action. On 20 Sep 1864, it was confirmed that Alexander, then 20 years old, was one of 4,177 Union soldiers killed in action during that battle.
