When Mother died she wanted to be cremated and her ashes spread in our back yard--so we did so, planting an ornamental tree and small statue. When Doree died she made the same request and we complied by have had a few reluctant thoughts about how the two of them are out there still arguing. (Source: Jean (Becker) Beard, neice of Dorothea, in an email dated 14 Feb 1999)

According to Aunt Doree, Bama (Alice's nickname by Jean & Janet's kids) did her china painting in 1904 in La Grange--it was popular with all her friends then. She also painted the Horse Fair picture when she was in high school--with no lessons in painting. She did a charcoal dog picture--Dignity and Impudence--as a young woman. On 18 Feb 1864, Jane, a widow of James and a life-long resident of Wiota, appeared before the J. S. Humphrey, Clerk of the Court of Lafayette County, Wisconsin, and signed the "Widow's Declaration for Pension." It was witnessed by Charles Osterday and McCready Martin. On this occasion, Jacob Miller submitted and affidavit certifying the Jane's marriage to James.

Apparently this pension was approved and paid under Claim No. 30641 in Madison, for on 6 Jan 1903, Jane, a widow for the second time and a resident of Belleview, submitted a "Declaration of a Widow for Restoration of Pension," witnessed by A.P. Manson and W.T. Williams. Affidavits signed by Thomas Balfour, Hollis Crocker, William W. Crocker, J. M. Williams, and Henry Geiger; and notarized by James H. Oliver, provide information supporting her application. Henry Geiger, a neighbor for twenty years, affirms that Jane has a dower interest in 160 acres of land, half in the Town of Primrose and half in the town of Montrose, valued at $45 per acre; that she lives with her sons and has the following personal property: 21 hogs valued at $210, 5 horses valued at $400, 23 cows valued at $805, 18 two-year-olds valued at $80, 75 chickens valued at $15, and farm machinery valued at $150.
