OBITUARY
The New York Times, August 1, 1943 E. H. BOWIE IS DEAD; A WEATHER EXPERT: Pacific States Director Joined Staff of U. S. Bureau at its Organization in 1891: ONCE CHIEF OF FORECAST: Signal Corps Major in France in First World War--Head of Meteorological Society

BERKELEY, Calif., July 31 (AP)--Edward Hall Bowie, Pacific States regional director of the United States Weather Bureau and President of the American Meteorological Society, died here Thursday night. His age was 69.

Mr. Bowie had been in the service of the United States Weather bureau since its organization in 1891, except for a time during the First World War, when he was commissioned a major in the Signal Corps and ordered to France to make meteorological forecasts for the American European Forces. He contributed much to the science of weather forecasting and the study of storms in the United State and the West Indies.

He provided meteorological information for Amelia Earhart and other aviators. In 1923 Mr. Bowie took part in conducting an experimental floating weather bureaus on the French training ship Jacques Cartier. Upon his return from the cruise he pronounced forecasting at sea simpler than on land, because diversified topology did not have to be considered.

A hobby of his was the study of "the great reservoir of air" which accumulates near the North Pole and flows in great streams to the south. He held that when the weather man learned how "rivers of air" 10,000 to 30,000 feet deep sweep down along a particular "channel" from the far north to the Equator he would be closer to the secret of seasonal weather forecasting.

In 1923, in a report to the American Meteorological Society, Mr. Bowie described "the West Coast Fault." An atmospheric flaw, in which, he said, the cyclones of the far western states frequently breed.

He was born in Annapolis Junction, Md, on March 29, 1874, the son of Thomas John Bowie and Susanna Hall Anderson Bowie, and received an M. S. degree from St. John's College, Annapolis, in 1920. Mr. Bowie became an assistant observer for the United States Weather Bureau at Memphis in 1891, served in a similar capacity at Montgomery, Ala., from 1896 to 1898, and was an observer at Dubuque, Iowa, 1898-1901.

He was section director at Galveston, Texas, 1901-03; local forecaster, St. Louis, 1903-09; chief of the forecast division, United States Weather Bureau, 1910-12; national forecaster, 1909-1924; and principal meteorologist and district forecaster, Pacific States, since 1924.

Mr. Bowie was a member of the committees on meteorological and hydrology of the American Geophysical Union, a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, and a member of the Philosophical Society of Washington and the Washington Academy of Sciences. His clubs included the Faculty of Berkeley and the Family of San Francisco.

In 1895 he married Florence C. Hatch. They had three daughters, Mrs. Helen McKinstry Prentiss, Mrs. Margaret Lowndes Wallace, and Mrs. Susanna Anderson Lindquist.
