bullet Capt. Joshua NICKERSON was born on 30 Nov 1819 in Harwich MA. (528) He died on 15 Sep 1891. At an early age, Captain Nickerson commenced to follow the seas. About 1862, he removed to Gloucester and entered the business of buying and selling fish on commission. Upon quitting that business in 1873, he took command of the three-masted schooner, JULIAN A. BROWN, which was built for him, and after making one voyage to China and several to New Orleans and the West Indies, he retired in 1883 to his home in Harwich Port, where he has since resided.

Capt. Nickerson was public spirited and took part in local public affairs and politics. He was originally a member of the No-Nothing Party and afterwards, styled himself after Charles Sumner, Republican.

Capt. Nickerson was a person of great firmness of character and always displayed courage of his convictions. Early exposed to the temptations offered by strong drink and tobacco, he shunned them all and led a long life of total abstinence, always advocating the principle of temperance wherever or whenever an opportunity offered. She was married to Kenneth Mason WILSON on 30 Aug 1930 in Harwich Port, MA. My mother Priscilla often told the story about why she selected Kenneth as her husband. Descended from two lines of the DOANE family, one from Maine and the other from Cape Cod, and the NICKERSON family, another well-known Cape family, she was concerned about the inbreeding that had occurred among her ancestors. She vowed, for the sake of her offspring, not to add to this problem so, she said, she married a man from Milwaukee. It was only after the marriage that she discovered her mother-in-law was from the HATCH family, another well-known New England family. We all joined her in her laughter over the joke that was played on her.

I think she believed that being from New England was cause enough to be concerned. I am not sure she knew that the three families probably walked in the same streets and attended the same churches for generations, since all three had their roots on Cape Cod, beginning with its founding in the early 1600s.
