For Paul and Harriet, the Civil War must have been a trying experience. Within one month in the fall of 1861, all of their sons and their nephew, Robert Augustus BABBITT, were mustered into the Union Army. Their nephew was killed in action. Their sons returned safely at the end of the war.

Certainly, times were more pleasant after the war in Winnebago City, MN for her and Paul. There, Harriet had an active life and was honored as the "mother" of the City. She died as the result of a mistep, breaking a limb. The City pay honor to her at her burial by hanging crape and closing every business house in the City. She was mistress of her own house, walking over two miles making sick calls on the day that closed her active life at age 87.

OBITUARY
Death of Mrs. Harriet McKinstry (Winnebago City, MN, Oct 9, 1897): Mrs. Harriet McKinstry, widow of the late Paul McKinstry, died at the home of her son, Mr. A. P. McKinstry, this city, on Sunday morning, Oct. 3d, 1897, aged 87 years, from the effects of an accident she sustained a week previous. Mrs. McKinstry was a native of Vermont, and came to Winnebago City with her husband and family in 1868.

She was a conscientious Christian woman, of the most noble and generous impulses, and whose chief object in life was to serve others and follow the golden rule. Mrs. McKinstry had many friends, in fact they were only limited to the extent of her acquaintance, for she possessed those noble womanly virtues and showed that wonderful kindness and Christ-love to all, no matter what their class or condition of life, that it was impossible to know her and not to admire and love her. Her death is universally mourned, and the hand of sympathy is extended by all to the bereaved friends.

Mrs. McKinstry leaves four children, Henry, a resident of Worcester, Mass.; Mrs. A. P. Hatch, of Illinois, and Azro P. and Mrs. J. F. Winship, of this city. The funeral was held from her residence, Tuesday afternoon, at 4 o’clock. Sermon was preached by Rev. P. Clare, her former pastor.

As a last tribute from her children, Sabbath School class, and friends, there was a beautiful offering of the choicest hot house flowers. The casket, containing the remains of this beloved woman, was wreathed with roses. The funeral was largely attended, and just before sunset of a beautiful October day, she was laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery beside the grave of her husband who passed to the other shore just seven years before.
