Thomas HATCH⁽²⁵⁸⁾ was born on 14 Oct 1598 in Biddenden, Kent, England. He died before May 1661. In 1739 Thomas Hatch and nine others applied to Plymouth Colony for a grant of leave to purchase land and form a new township on the Cape Cod peninsula. The leave was granted and Thomas and the other grantees at once went there and built themselves log houses. The town was incorporated that same year and named Yarmouth. According to the few records that remain from that period that exist today, a dispute about land arose shortly after incorporation, probably accounting for Thomas moving his family to nearby Barnstable. In 1840, they migrated to Crawford County and settled in North Schenango Township. Orrin acquired his education at the common and select schools of the county, then worked on his father’s farm and taught school. On 5 Jun 1861, Orrin enlisted as a private in the Allegheny College Volunteers, Company I, 10th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps and was promoted to Corporal in Feb 1862. He saw considerable active service and was so seriously wounded in the left arm at the Battle of Gains Mills, Virginia, on 27 Jun 1862, that amputation was rendered necessary. He received a medical discharge on 12 Sep 1862. Upon his return to Crawford County, he was appointed deputy tax collector for the 20th District. He was elected Clerk of the County in 1863 and reelected in 1866. In 1870 he was appointed Deputy Marshall of the U.S. Census Bureau for Meadville and Valonia. On 1 Mar 1871, he was appointed Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, a capacity he served until 1891. He was appointed Postmaster of Meadville in 1891 by President Harrison. Orrin was one of seven of the 3,000 first-class postmasters chosen by John Wanamaker, the Postmaster General to work on improving mail service. In 1896 Orrin was elected the Meadville city assessor. In 1866 Orrin was initiated into Cussewago Lodge, No. 108, I.O.O.F. In 1870 he was one of the charter members who organized Crawford Lodge, No. 734. He was an I.O.O.F. member for 32 years and noble grand two terms. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Endowment Association of Western Pennsylvania from 1880 and a member of Sergeant Peiffer Post, No. 334, G.A.R., at Meadville.
