DIED-At the residence of her son, in Shenango township, on the 21st after a long and severe illness, MRS. MARTHA MASON, in the 76th year of her age. The widow Mason (as she was known) emigrated to this western country along with her children in the year 1797, when it was literally a wilderness, exposed to all the hardships and difficulties incident to the settlement of a new and uninhabited country. Her tenderness as a mother and her usefulness as a woman, will long be remembered, and her death lamented by all her friends and acquaintance[s].

Her origins are uncertain, but she may well have been the Martha Mason taxed for 2 horses and 3 cows on the 1787 assessment rolls for Lower Bald Eagle Township in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. That area became part of Lycoming County in 1795, and it was from Lycoming (now Clinton) County that many Crawford County settlers emigrated, including her presumed son James Mason. A Martha Mason is listed there in the 1790 census with one male under 16, one male 16 or older, and two other females. It could be that Jacob's widow was also the Martha Mason who contracted in August 1799 to purchase land in what is now Vernon Township, and evidently resided there for a number of years.

The 1800 U.S. Census, Meadville Twp., Crawford Co., Penn. p. 5 http://www.gremlan.org/~yoset/CCo/census/1800/5.html
lists a Joseph Mason with 00300-01010, which could account for Joseph, James, Jacob, Jr., and their mother Martha.
