He died 10, 11 on 2 Jan 1658/1659 in Dublin, Ireland. He was buried 12 in Christs Church, Dublin, Ireland. Richard was admitted to Middle Temple, bound with Talbot and John Pepys 13, 14 on 29 Oct 1609. He was employed 15 as M.P. for Sudbury in 1640. He was mentioned in, and executor of the will of his brother John 16 on 11 May 1642. He was mentioned in Essex quarter sessions as one of the chief justices in 1652. He was mentioned in state papers as being carried to Dublin on the Islip on 27 Oct 1654. He was employed 17, 18 as Lord Chief Justice of Ireland 1655 - 1658. He was employed 19 as Seargeant at Law. He signed a will 20, 21 on 24 Feb 1656. Administration to son Samuel with will attached, of personalty in Ireland on 2 May 1659 22 Administration to son Richard of his English estate on 30 Jul 1660 23

W.C. Pepys says that this Richard was born before Bef 2 Jul 1589 when he was mentioned iin his fathers will.

Marriage of Ric. Pepis and Judith Cutts appears on Boyd's marriage index for 1620 in Debden. This present something of a problem because his son Richard Pepys is said to be the Richard on the passenger list of the Ffrancis 1634 to New England listed to have been born in 1607 (age 27 according to passenger list of the Frances). Richard Pepys Jr's marriage to Mary Skott similarly appears for 1650 which agrees with baptisms 1653- but places this too far on to be the Richard Pepys in 1634.

The baptisms of most of the children are found on Stoke by Clare, Suffolk, there are also earlier Pepys recorded than this family in Stoke, but the relationship is unknown.

Richard married 4 (1) Judith Cutte 1, 2, 3 daughter of Sir. William Cutte in 1620 in Debden, Essex, England. Judith was born estimated 1599 in Debden, Essex, England.

If the following entry is this Judith then she was younger than Richard. Burial St Botolph Bishopsgate: 15 Jun 1661 Judeth Peapes age 53. But the place of burial would not appear to fit with Richard's appointment in Ireland.

There is possibly a connection with three Pepys births in Dublin in the 18th century. Vincent, Urmston, and Dorthea Pepys. are children of Captain Arthur Pepys born estimated 1667. There is a will of a John Pepys (Quartermaster to Athy) in Dublin in 1720. Arthur Pepys refers to his brother John.

According to WCP - Samuel Pepys of Dublin, Ireland. A clergyman. Living there unmarried in 1659/60. This could be the father of Arthur and John Pepys, grandfather of Vincent, Mary, Dorothea and Urmston Pepys born Ireland in 1700s.

A Statement of the Case of Samuel Pepys [as legatee of his father, Richard Pepys, late Chief Justice of Ireland] MS. Carte 68, fol(s). 629 [1661?] Contents: A Statement of the Case of Samuel Pepys [as legatee of his father, Richard Pepys, late Chief Justice of Ireland] purchaser from Major Dudley Philips, concerning his claim to certain arrears of military pay for services in Ireland, under the terms of his Majesty's late 'Declaration' for the Settlement of that Kingdom.
WCP says that Samuel of Steeple Bumstead is brother of Richard, but the following clearly fits this Samuel dates better. Unless there is a mistake in this note. Apprentices: Pepes, Samuel, son of Richard, Bumpstead, Essex, to Benjamin Smith, 15th Nov 1649, Pewterers Company. This Samuel would have been 17 in 1649. But an apprenticship does not seem to fit with being a clergyman.

A Samuel of Ashen would seem likely to be this Samuel.

Copy will of Samuel Pepys of Steeple Bumpstead, gent (Archdeaconry of Middlesex) - ref.?HA 517/I9?- date: 18 Jan 1706

Richard married (2) Mary Gosnold 1, 2 daughter of Capt. Bartholomew Gosnold and Mary Goldinge after 1632. Mary was born about 1599 in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England. She died 3, 4 in 1660 in Dublin, Ireland. Mary signed a will 5, 6 on 13 Aug 1659. She had a will probated 7, 8 on 10 Oct 1660.

Mary Gosnold, Bartholomew's oldest daughter, became the second wife of Richard Pepys, Esq., later knighted, and the step-mother of his six children. Sir Richard Pepys was a cousin of the famous diarist, but apparently not on intimate terms with him. Sir Richard had a distinguished career as a jurist, enjoying the favor of the Puritans. In his last years Sir Richard was Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, dying in Dublin on 2 Jan. 1658-59. His wife, Mary Gosnold Pepys, died the next year.

A Richard Pepes married Mary Wincol in 1638 in Horringer. This the same parish as Marth Gosnold married John Blemmell. Mary refers to her son 'Wincol' in will of 1659. It would seem likely that Mary was married to Wincol prior to Richard Pepys.

142. Samuel Pepys 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 (John , John , William , William , Robert , Thomas ) was christened 12, 13, 14 on 3 Dec 1600 in Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, England. Samuel was mentioned in the will of his brother Thomas 15 on 17 Dec 1617. He was described as of Ashen, Essex in release of marriage of daughter Elizabeth to Jerome Lacey in 1655. He was descibed as 'of Ashen Essex' in marriage release of daughter. in 1655. He had a will probated 16, 17 on 8 Feb 1664/1665. He signed a will 18, 19 on 3 Oct 1664.

EC and WCP says that this is Samuel of Steeple Bumstead. (Elizabeth Bendish was of Steeple Bunstead). However, there seems to be other indications that Samuel of Steeple Bumstead is Samuel son of Richard. See notes with Samuel 1632 an apprenticeship of 'Samuel son of Richard' in 1649 in Steeple Bumstead. This Samuel is described as of Ashen, Essex in marriage release of daughter Elizabeth in 1655.

The IGI marriage record shows a marriage of Samuel Pepis and Margaret Bee St. Andrew Less, Cambridgeshire. WCP says margaret Rooks. EC suggests that Margaret Rooks may have been previously married.
There is also a marriage of Samuel Pepys and Margaret Bedwer on 19 Jul 1624 which seems just too coincidental to not be some kind of error.

Alternatively another Samuel of the next generation may be unacounted for.

Samuel married 5, 6 Margaret Bee (nee Rooks) 1, 2, 3, 4 daughter of Richard Rooks on 19 Jul 1625 in St. Andrew the less, Cambridge, England. Margaret was born estimated 1604. Margaret was mentioned in the will of her husband 7, 8 on 3 Oct 1664. She was dau and heiress of R. Rooks of Swaveney 9 in Cambridgeshire, England.

Notes: The marriage date is based upon the marriage of Samuel Pepys and Margaret Bee. EC surmises that Margaret Rooks may have been previously married or Samuel may have married twice.

This is one candidate to be William Peaps the playwright. Which would place his birthdate to be about 1632.

Printed in an edition of 170 copies., This play originally appeared in 1649, the year King Charles I was executed in Whitehall. The author was said to be a school boy of not yet seventeen years. The writer was probably William Peaps, a distant cousin of Samuel Pepys. The subject is several interwoven love stories, but the underlying theme is how one should react to tyranny¯i.e., whether revolution is ever justified, and whether tyranny inevitably leads to more tyranny. At the end of the play the remorseless ruler of the kingdom admits that he has erred: "Too long I have practis'd Tyrany;/Mercy hereafter shall become my study."

He was buried 8 on 30 Jul 1676 in St. Alphage's, London, England. Thomas was Aldernman and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Upholders 9 in 1656 in Farringdon Without. He was mentioned as "my heir in law", in the will of brother Robert 10 on 12 Aug 1657. He signed a will 11, 12 on 2 Feb 1664/1665. He was mentioned in the will of his sister Edith Bell 13 on 15 Sep 1665. He signed a codicil of will 14 on 9 Jun 1676. He resided 15 in London, England. He had a will probated 16, 17 on 16 Aug 1676.

According to WCP Thomas 'of London' was born 1594 to Thomas and Francis nee Meores (indeed Samuel Pepys records this year in his notes of 31 Dec 1664). However the baptism of a Thomas in 1597 after the marriage of Thomas to Mary Day would suggest that the earlier Thomas died. This christening occurs in St. Peter Wisbech to a Thomas Pepys. Thomas and Mary Day were married in St. Peter Wisbech in 1596. WCP says that this Thomas was apprenticed to Richard Craicrofte. However, Elizabeth Pepys nee Bendish married Richard Craycroft in 1607 and so it seems likely that it is the son of John and Elizabeth whe was apprenticed. Similarly Latham and Matthews suggest that this Thomas was admitted to Freedom of the Mercers in 1615 and that probably is Thomas son of John and Elizabeth.

The dates of the children were given as somewhat earlier in the IGI. Charles is given as age 30 in his marriage licence.

1666 he is presumably the Thomas Pepys recorded in hearth taxes in St. Bride, Fleet Street. He quarelled with Samuel over Robert of Brampton's will.

Thomas married Mary Syvret 1, 2, 3, 4 about 1630 in Eaton, Cambridge, England. Mary was born 5 in of, Jersey. She died after 1676. Mary was mentioned in the will of her brother-in-law Robert Pepys 6 on 12 Aug 1657. She was mentioned in the will of her sister-in-law Edith Bell 7 on 15 Sep 1665. She was mentioned in and sole executix of will of her husband 8, 9 on 16 Aug 1676.

Some of the references that are later than the burial may be because of error in attribution of Thomas of London.

Marriage: according to the Diary Samuel and Elizabeth celebrated 10th October as their real marriage it is beleived they probably had a secret religous ceremony before the civil wedding.

EC has this Thomas as son of Thomas the red. EC. has Thomas b.1640 of Mileham as Thomas the Executor, but Latham says he was far to young for his biographical details.
Robert Latham believes this to be Thomas "the Executor" of Hatcham and Merton Abbey, and the marriage to Ursula is thus his second marriage. It is clear in the will of his Uncle Apollo that he is referred to as son of his brother Thomas the younger. I have moved WCP's information from Thomas 1640 to Thomas 1611.

There is a birth of an Elizabeth *eeps in 1669 to a Roger *eeps that could fit this last marriage. But an earlier Elizabeth is already accounted for in marriage records

I had thought that some of these family details belonged to Thomas and Mary Syvret until the marriage record turned up. There was a Thomas Peapes of Cornhill, a printer/publisher in the 1640s. This Thomas would appear to be a possible candidate but the location is somewhat removed.
