Will: (EC speculates that the following will may belong to Robert 1548). It is of note that his son Thomas is assumed to be the Thomas who married Susan Cauthorn and resided in Lynn.

There are more children than seem to fit with this marriage suggesting a second marriage, possibly even a previous one. There is a marriage of a Roberty Peapes to Barbara Hullock in Linton, Cambridgeshire, but that would add another child Robert born 1601.

Unfortunately he dies young and unmarried and leaves everything to his half siblings by his mother's second marriage. This also indicates that Townsend must have predeceased George otherwise he would have left what he had to his (older) full brother rather than his half siblings." - Naomi Haworth

William resided 11 in Burnham Ulph and Norwich, Norfolk, England. He was mentioned in the will of his grandfather Richard Boston 12 on 22 Aug 1574. He was employed 13 as a wooolen draper. He was assesed for subsidy taxes at Burnham Ulphe and Sutton, in 1597 He was described as having 5 children living 14 on 11 Feb 1609. He signed a will 15, 16 on 18 Apr 1639. He was mention in surrenderof premises to use of Richard Pepys on 24 Apr 1650 in Burnham. He had a will probated 17, 18 on 17 Feb 1675/1676.

IGI has death record for 16 Sept 1633. (This Would appear to be William Jr. as in 1639 his father's will says he is dead).
Another burial for 15 Feb 1675. Which would make this William over 100.

Richard Pepys my son executor, he to be bound to William Houghton of Docking in £500 for payment of the legacies given by testator. William Houghton a witness to the will. *The marriage of dau to a Houghton does not appear to have been identified, but a John Houghton born about 1614 and marriage to Jane Slater on IGI.

The daughter Margaret married to John Stevenson is not mentioned above. And Richard Pepys Jr. refers to his brother (in law) John Stevenson. This would suggest that Margaret belongs in the next generation a child of Richard Pepys Sr.
daughter Mary married to Saunderson is also not mentioned and Richard Pepys Jr. refers to his brother in law Saunderson.

William married Lucy Thurlow 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 daughter of Robert Thurlow and Margaret on 17 Feb 1585 in Burnham Sutton, Norfolk, England. Lucy was born after 1566 in Burnham Sutton, Norfolk, England. Lucy was underage 6, 7 on 25 May 1590. She was living 8 on 11 Feb 1609. She was not mentioned in the will of her husband 9 on 18 Apr 1639.

        Alice married Clement Athowe 1, 2 son of Thomas Athowe. Clement was born on 20 Aug 1590. He was buried 3 on 12 Apr 1655 in Beechamwell, Norfolk, England. Clement was employed 4 as Rector in 1623/1655 in Beachamwell, Norfolk, England. He was mentioned in the will of his father-in-law William Pepys 5 on 18 Apr 1639.

Clement Athow was baptised 20 Aug. 1599 at Beachamwell Norfolk so I think Alice would be around the same age as him. Clement was a Royalist in the English Civil War and was the Rector of St. John's Bitchamwell (old spelling of Beachamwell) church from 1623 till he died in 1655 as far as I know there were no children of this marriage. There is no sign of St. John's Church left so it must have been demolished many years ago. When we were at the Norfolk Record Office several years ago we saw some old drawings of the joint coats of arms for the Athow/Pepys family there were several different drawings for the Athow/Pepys may be they were just samples to choose a Coat of Arms from , I guess we will never know but they were very good. As his mother married Richard Craycroft in 1607 it would seem likely that this is the Thomas Pepys who was apprenticed to Richard Craycroft in 1606 and applied for freedom of the mercers company in 1615. These biographical details have been associated by some authors with Samuel's uncle, Thomas Pepys of London.

Arthur Bryant and Edwin Chappel have " Thomas the Elder, the Black" as Grandfather of Samuel Pepys. WCP had Thomas the younger "the red" as Samuels grandfather. WCP may have assumed that a second Thomas meant that the first had died. But clearly from the will of John Pepys both were still alive. It appears that first two children may be by first marriage.

According to WCP: Grandfather of Samuel Pepys the diarist. "Thomas the Red" to distinguish him from "Thomas the Black" who died. Arthur Bryant and Edwin Chappel says that Thomas the Black was Samuels G-Father. Both Thomases were living in their father's and brother's wills. Talbot Pepys MSS: "My brother Thomas Pepys, juniour departed out of this life, upon Tuesday, the second day of May 1615.

EC suggest that this could be the Paulina who married Thomas Alcocke. But she is not mentioned in the will of her uncle Apollo in 1641, just one year after.

The evidence for adding Talbot here is the place of christening. It is possible that this is Talbot who has been placed with Thomas the Black. The four sisters referred to in the will would match family of Thomas the Red.
