6. Michael Oerther was born on 22 Dec 1732 in Germany. He was born on 22 Dec 1732 in Alsace-Lorraine, Germany.1 He immigrated about 1741 to Philadelphia, PA.1 He died on 28 May 1808.2 He died on 28 May 1808 in Frederick Co., MD.1 He was baptized in Phila, PA..2 He was buried in Krider's Cemetery, Westminster, MD.1 He was a in Ironworker.1 He was in Lutheran.1 He Veteran of War in American Revolution.1 He has reference number 1831. The name was originally spelled Oerther but due to the difficulty in pronunciation the name was later changed to Arter or Arthur.

THE THEORY: The Oerthers were originally Swiss Moravians who migrated to Alsace-Lorraine, probably after the Thirty Years' War. (Several Protestant families were driven out of the town of ARTH in 1655) But the chronic warfare that raged across Alsace-Lorraine and the German states on the other side of the Rhine was to make life almost intolerable for people living in these areas. A flood of immigration to Pennsylvania began about 1709 and continued for many decades. Wilhelm Oerther or his father moved from Alsace-Lorraine to Britain, where the family lived for some years. In 1751 Wilhelm Oerther and family immigrated to Pennsylvania ; his son Michael was 18. Possibly Wilhelm's wife was named Maria Barbara. Since Pennsylvania was heavily settled at this time, Wilhelm moved to the new lands of western Maryland (Frederick was not laid out until 1745). Here, he was a member of the Moravian Church until persuaded by "Count" Rudolph to join the Lutheran Church. His son Michael married Catherine Dill or Dillin or Dillen (Dillin is the feminine form of Dill, and there were many Dills in early Frederick: and moved to the Westminster area. Although the preceding is all theory, it may be useful to later students of Oerther origins.

Tombstone Inscription reads: Michael Here rest the remains of Michael Oerther. Born into this world Dec 22, 1732. He married Catherine Dillin. Together they created 12 children - 10 sons and 2 daughters. They lived together in marriage 44 years. He died May 28 1808. His age was 75 years, 5 months and 28 days.

Delightful--The Daily Globe, Shelby, Ohio, Thursday, August 20, 1931--Home Coming and Outing at Lake Park--The twenty-third annual reunion of the Arter family was held at Lake Park, Wednesday, August 12. the morning was an ideal one, the intense heat wave had been broken by a rain that had fallen just a few days previous. Early in the morning members of this large family were on their way anxiously expecting to meet loved ones, who never meet only at this home coming, many surprises are in store some new members are always among the group, who receive a hearty welcome, and are finding out more about their lineage. There are some who have never missed one of the reunions, and the thought of getting back to the park where so many delightful reunions have been held is to them a day of pleasure looked forward to from year to year which is always the second Wednesday in August and is a real holiday for Arters. Not only the descendants of Michael Arter (who was born 1732) and Mary Catherine (Dillon) Arter, but for descendants from other family Arter trees. One tree has for their paternal ancestor Joh, whose death occurred about 1810, this John was the owner of a tract of land lying in Shamokin township North Umberland county, Pennsylvania. he had a number of sons and daughters whose descendants are as numerous as the descendants of Micahel and Cahterine and many of the new tree are interested and attending this home coming hoping to meet some of their immediate family whom they have never known. Although the missing link of relation which connects the various trees is not yet found, "the golden key of friendship" is binding the entire family together with a hope that all will soon know where each belong. And long before noon the pavilion at Lake Park on Arter day is the scene of a day of real enjoyment. The morning is spent in registering, receiving the branch colors and getting acquainted. The souvenir badge, quite unique, a miniature U. S. flag with a picture of some different member of the family on the medallion attached to the flag and if kept can be shown to the younger generations many years hence, and when worn on reunion day with the different branch colors, looks very nice. The picture of Miss Sarah J. Arter Hout, was on this year's badge, who is a great-grand-daughter of George Arter the pioneer settler of Richland county, (1816) When the noon hour arrived all were ready for the sumptuous dinner that was awaiting to be served cafeteria by a most competent committee and was proved to be a very satisfactory way of serving as to the distribution of the refreshments, yet some of the male member objected to walking after the many good eats in store, although they had the privilege of their own selection. No doubt the men will be called on another year to act as table committee and the ladies will observe and be glad to be waited upon. A short program was given in the afternoon, consisting of talks from different members. Joseph Diehl of Northumberland, Pa., a member of the new tree of John gave a very interesting talk, this being the first of these reunions Mr. Diehl and family had the privilege to attend. They also drove the greatest distance to be present, a distance of 406 miles. A number of letters were read from absent members, many from those who have never attended any of the reunions, yet they are interested and take the opportunity of introducing themselves, at these meetings that all may know who is who. A letter from W. O. Arter of Jamestown, N. Y., who has been an invalid for nearly two years, many of the cousins will remember him, having attended many of the reunions. A letter from Mrs. Clara Bird Kopp, wife of Representative W. F. Kopp, of the first district of Iowa, who has been in congress for a period of eleven years and will return to Washington this next year. A card of greeting from Mrs. Florence McLeran Bird of Mt. Pleasant, IA. Mrs. Bird is 82 years young. Another from Mrs. Lydia Arter Myers of Hanover, Pa., who sent her picture and is 83 years of age, belongs to the branch of William and is yet quite active. Greetings from Howard Arter of Dowagiac, Mich., and from Nahia Arter of Westminster, Md. Greetings from Mrs. A .V. Park, Albion, N. Y. Mrs. Lillian Nied, South Haven, Mich., Mrs. Jennie Anderson, Chautauqua, N. Y., Mrs. Frank Lang, Sumner, IA., Mrs. J. A. Taylor, Ames, IA., Mrs. Susie Arter Cronbaugh, Bell Plaine, IA., nearly all who have sent greetings have sent the necessary amount required for the souvenir badge proving that the badge is appreciated. E. E. Arter of San Francisco, Cal., sent a letter of regret and who hopes to attend the next reunion. The same officers were retained for the ensuing year. A number of deaths were reported to the secretary since the last reunion. A letter from Charles Arter Cairo, Ill., reporting three deaths in his father's family, that of Grace Arter Magee of Los Angeles, Cal., and Emma Arter of Ocean Park, Cal., Will Anderson, Craigmont, IA., A. V. Park, Albion, N. Y., Eugene Arter, Galion, O., Mrs. Della Jones Arter, wife of John Arter of Marion, O., Richardson Arter Lisbon, O., Mrs. Maria Arter, wife of the late Jacob Ater, Traer, IA., Hazel Neal, Tiro, O., Orton Arter, Upper Sandusky, O., Eldora M. Nunnamaker, Ft. Wayne, Ind. The Great Reaper Death has been busy and with his sickle keen he has reaped the bearded grain and the flowers that grew between. There has been a vast number of births and no doubt marriages but none reported to the secretary. There are a number of souvenir badges left unsold. Any one desiring one of these badges can have same mailed to them if they send the amount of 15 cents to the secretary with their address. The next reunion will be held at Lake Park, Mansfield, O., the second Wednesday in August, 1932. It is hoped that the next reunion will be the banner one as it is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Michael Arter. The picture on the badge will be that of John Arter of Marion who belongs to the branch of William. Mr. Arter has never missed but one reunion and that was on account of sickness in the family. To Members of the Family --Will you kindly send any data that you may find or the address of any new Arters that you may chance to find. Records or any data, the object of these home comings is to find the genealogy of each branch and tree. Any data mailed to Miss Lettie D. Arter ,Maple Front Farm, Shelby, O., R. D. 2, will be greatly appreciated. Those who were in attendance from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Diehl, Miss Geraldine Diehl, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Her husband William died before Jan 12, 1824 and Hannah declined the administration of his estate as he died intestate and she appointed her brother, William Haas, as administrator. The petition to the Orphans Court of Nthd. Co. on Jan. 19, 1824 listed 6 children in minority - namely Elizabeth, Jesse, John, Daniel, William, and Sarah. Evaline seems to have been born in August after her father's death. Some records show an Amandus and Elam. Haas Cousins (HC) pg 65 says we have been unable to find data on all these & we wonder if they may have taken their middle names to go by. If Amandus & Elam were born between William & Evaline Arter, why weren't they mentioned as children in Minority in the petition to the orphans court - if they are older than Elizabeth, their mother, Hannah would have to have been married at about age 15.

"The most terrible disaster in the history of Cairo occurred shortly after eight o'clock Tuesday morning, when the ferryboat Katherine was wrecked in a servere wind storm and eleven human lives were lost."

"The victims were:

Wood Rittenhouse, Sr."

etc., etc.

"The Katherine left her warf' at i o"clock A.M., and had proceeded about a mile down the river, on a trip to Bird's Point, Mod., and Wickliffe, Ky., when the storm struck her. The wind sprang up very suddenly at 8;30 and in a few seconds was blowing at a terrific rate. The boat was thrown over on her side and the water rushed in and she sank. Her chimneys were carried away, her boilers went over board and her cabin was crushed like and egg shell."
