1. Matthew Watson 1 was born about 1660 in Scarboro, County York, England and died on 13 Sep 1703 in Chesterfield, Burlington, NJ, about age 43.

General Notes: From Bos (also see Colonial Families of Philadelphia): "Matthew Watson, a chemist, and Anne Manleverer ... married in July 1681 and the following year they came to America and settled in Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey. Their 1000 acres were located on the south bank of Crosswicks Creek. He built his first cabin on a high bluff, overlooking the creek. Nearby the first fording place above the mouth of the creek became known as Watson's Ford and an important crossing."

From History of Bucks County p 136: Mathew Watson and Anne Mauleverer, his wife, migrated from Scarborough, in Yorkshire, England, about 1682, and settled in Chesterfield. They were members of Chesterfield Monthly Meeting. His occupation is given as "chemits." He purchased in 1683 of Thomas Hutchinson, alte of Beverly in Yorkshire, a one-twelfth share in the province of West Jersey, and appears to have been a man of wealth and education. He died in Chesterfield 7 mo 13, 1703, and his wife Anne died there 11 mo, 16, 1721

Matthew married ²Anne Mauleverer Pearson³ 1 in Jul 1681 in Scarboro, County York, England. Anne was born about 1660 in Mowthorpe and died on 16 Apr 1721 in Chesterfield, Burlington, NJ, about age 61.

2. Marmaduke Watson 1 was born on 13 Oct 1685 in Chesterfield MM, Burlington County New Jersey 2 and died on 14 May 1746 in Chesterfield Twp, Burlington, NJ, at age 60.

General Notes: From History of Bucks County: He inherited from his father large tracts of land in different parts of West Jersey ... among them a tract in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon, county, on the Musconetcong creek, which he devised in his will to his son Aaron. "

Watson, Marmaduke, of Chesterfield, Burlington Co., yeoman; will of. Wife, Elizabeth, personal estate and 3 negroes. Son, Aaron, tract lying between George Taylor and Amos Wilkins. Son, Marmaduke, plantation I now dwell on. Daughter, Ann Curtis, and her daughters Diademe and Elizabeth. Executors- wife and son Marmaduke. Witnesses-John Butler, Sen'r, John Butler, Jun'r. Proved July 24, 1749. Lib. 6, p. 308.

Colonial Families says Marmaduke b 10/13/1685 d. 1749

"We went to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and found a file called Rand family Notes. In that file it stated that John Watson married Mary Jackson on Nov 11 1779 in Shrewsbury, PA. It also stated that Mary Jackson was "a descendant of Danile Jackson who settled Bristol about 1698 and before the Revolution. The Jacksons went to Shrewsbury, Pa."

Marmaduke married ²Elizabeth Pancoast³,1 daughter of ²William Pancoast³ and ²Hannah Scattergood³, on 27 Mar 1718 in Burlington Friends Meeting, Burlington Cty New Jersey.3 Elizabeth was born about 1696 and died after 1750.

4. Aaron Watson was born in 1720 in Chesterfield Twp, Burlington, NJ 5 and died after 1804 in Kingwood, New Jersey.

General Notes: From History of Bucks County: "It is possible he became associated with his uncle Mathew in the "trading" business, as he seems to have followed a migratory life for some years. In 1744 he brings a certificate from Chester, PA to Philadelphia, where he remained until after his father's death. In 1750 he takes a certificate to his old home at Chesterfield, but probably located at once on his inheritance at Bethelehem, now Kingwood, though he does not take a certificate to Kingwood Meeting until 1754, when about to marry Sarah Emley, a member of that meeting."

Chesterfield MM: "2nd da., 5th mo., 1754. Aaron Watson granted a certificate to Bethlehem Monthly meeting on account of marriage.

"At our MM held at Kingwood 13th day 6th mo. 1754 Robert Large and Harmanus Kesster report they attended the marriage of Aaron Watson & Sarah Emley."

Chesterfield: "7th da., 6th mo., 1772. Aaron Watson granted a certificate to Kingwood MM for himself, wife and four children, John, Lucy, Sarah..."

Kingwood: 9th da 7th mo 1772: "Aaron Watson produced a certificate to this Meeting for himself wife and 4 children viz, John Luse Anne & Sarrah recommending them as members to this Meeting (p 171)

8. John Watson was born on 26 May 1757 in Kingwood Meeting, Hunterdon County, NJ and died on 20 Oct 1818 in Mechanicsville, Pennsylvania, at age 61.

General Notes: From History of Bucks County: "During the Revolution he removed to Shrewsbury, and engaged in the manufacture of salt on the Jersey coast, where Point Pleasant is now located. He sold the product to the continental army, and thus incurred the special enmity of the British, who destroyed his residence and plant, thereby ruining him financially. He married about 1778 or 1779, at Shrewsbury, Mary Jackson, a descendant of Daniel Jackson, who migrated from Stangerthwaite, in Yorkshire, about 1693, and located in Bristol Township, Bucks county, whose descendants had removed to Shrewsbury prior to the revolution. "

Kingwood minutes, page 212, 11/11/1779: "The meeting is informed John Watson has remov'd without Certificate and since Marry'd contrary to the rules of our discipline." Page 217, July 13 1780: "John Watson's paper of acknowledgement coming again under consideration [I did not find mention of its first appearance] was rec'd and he requests a certificate to Shrewsbury MM. Samuel Kester & Henry Cliffton are appointed to prepare an essay of one for the approbation of next meeting." same page: "a certificate was signed on behalf of John Watson wherein he was recommended to Shrewsbury Meeting."

1780 Bethlehem, a taxpayer, but that year only?

May 7th 1781 requests certificate from Shrewsbury to Kingwood for self, wife, and daughter Sarah to Kingwood and his eldest son John was born at Kingwood 10 mo, 25, 1781

Kingwood, p 227: "John Watson produced a certificte for himself and wife and daughter Sarah from Shrewsbury Mo. Meeting dated 7th Mo 2nd 1781."

On page 32 in the listing of Friends who came to or left Kingwood, it shows that at meeting on 9 May 1782 it was noted that John Watson, wife Mary and two small children departed Kingwood meeting for Middletown meeting (location not specified).

General Notes: "James V. Watson, Old Financier, Dies - Former President of Clearing House and Consolidated National Bank Succombs at Home" James V. Watson, ninety-three years old ... was probably the oldest retired financier in Philadelphia. ... James Verree Watson was born in Bucks County, Pa., in 1817. He was educated in early life in country schools, and finished his education in John Neville's Classical School and Academy at Bustleton, afterward learning the trade of carpenter. In 1839 he commenced the building business, and in 1849 entered the lunger business under the firm name of Schofield & Watson... In 1855 the Consolidation Bank was organized and Mr. Watson was active in getting the charter through the legislature. He was elected its president, and has continued in that position up to the present time... Mr. Watson was married to Elizabeth M. Pitman, of Burlington County, N.J., in 1840. They have had six children, two of whom died in infancy, and one other died in 1888, in his forty-eighth year. ... Two sons, William J. Watson of Chicago, and James V. Watson of Duluth, and a daughter, Mrs. William F. Yarnall, survive him."
