Our connection to the Leonard line is elusive. I feel so sure that my Sarah Leonard, wife of Ebenezer Burt, is the daughter of Lot Leonard for many circumstantial reasons... and I feel so sure that Ebenezer himself is the son of Joseph Burt b 1757, whose wife was Jemima Leonard... I have wonderful stories to share which I have collected in the course of my research. I am despairing of ever finding the actual solid evidence to make this connection. Comments and additions welcome!

The family graveyard is located near the log house.

"The Leonard family came from new Jersey to Somerset township, and as early as 1780 were in possession of land here. There must have been a number of brothers, for the record of property transfers shows that a tract of one hundred and fifty-four acres was owned by several of these. It was first owned by Isaac Leonard, sold by him to Abner Leonard, by Abner to Caleb Leonard, and from him was purchased by John Hawkins."

This is from internet researcher Nora Borts borts@gte.net: " The exact date is not known, but to the elder was given the grant of land upon which the city of Trenton, New Jersey now stands. A soldier in the war of the Revolution, and a Federalist in politics. He preached Presbyterianism, Methodism and Quakerism, but finally became a Freethinker and preached his own new doctrine until he died at the age of ninety-two years. From p. 970 of Beers, J.H. and co., Commemorative Biographical Record of Washington County, Pennsylvania, 1893.

His Rev War pension is available from the Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Pensions, or Office of Adjutant General at Trenton NJ. It says he was born Nov 1755 in Morris County, then moved with father's family to Greene County PA whence he enlisted. Referred to as "Reverend Lot Leonard" He and his wife settled near her father, where he patented a tract of land on the Tenmile at the site of Homeville. He also bought the tract of land which Ezekiel Morris had patented to him. While living near Homeville in 1782, Lot served in Capt. James Archer's Militia Company.

Lot was a very large man, being about six feet seven inches in height. He was raised a Presbyterian, but in later life reformed to the Universal Salvation. Lot assisted all his children in acquiring homes and land during his lifetime. This accounts for his peculiar will in which he left only twenty-five cents to each of his surviving children and the remainder of his estate to his second wife Frances.

Served in Morris Co., N.J. militia 1775-1776; served 1778 as a captain of Indian Spies and rangers with headquarters at Jarret's Fort, Greene Co., Pa. Frances R6291 D.A.R. 118394

"At the age of about 21 years [this would have been about 1769 - however, that does not lie well with his dates in the NJ militia] Lot Leonard, having married Elizabeth Hoge ... moved to these parts and took up a tomahawk improvement, the tract of land known as the Caldwell Houlsworth property, on which the Houlsworth mill now stands, including the Still Smith farm and other adjoining lands."

General Notes: 1806-1807 Somerset Tp Washington County tax list Ebenezer appears on the single freemen list with brother William and father Joseph (tanyard and 50 acres) The 1807-1808 list notes that Joseph, William, and Ebenezer are all in the Hills voting district. (Would like to know where that is!) This list also says that Ebenezer is a shoemaker (like the father).

All three of them, plus John Burt, appear on the married list in 1808-1809 (and this time it is Ebenezer who was written on the Single list and then noted as married).

Ebenezer is noted with 57 acres of land in 1816-1817 and noted N.R. (non resident? did the family go to Greene after the death of Sarah's mother?) also 1817-1818. He returned in 1818-1819 (N.R. written but crossed out). He had only 36 acres by 1819 tax list. Found in 1820 census. Had only 35 acres in 1822 and his land transferred to Odbert in 1823 (in preparation for his move to Ohio). This is several years past the date of death often ascribed to him.

Next found in tax lists of Canaan Township Marion Ohio 1827 (cattle but no land) and 1830 census, town of Denmark. (Remember there was a grace period of several years after immigrating when no taxes were levied.) Probably living on/near lands of Zenas, Isaac, George Leonard, his wife's brothers and sister's husband. He was Justice of the Peace 1832-1835 at least. Close friend was Samuel Fuller.

In 1833 he was one of the Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church as they purchased a small lot from John S. Garoutte to erect a church. The deed was not filed until June 1836, after he died.

From Lou Burt's notes: "[Lou's] grandfather, Ebenezer Burt, and his grandfather's brother, William Burt, moved from Washington County Pa to New Denmark, Columbiana County, in or about 1815. [Note: Lou was confused. I believe William at least moved to Columbiana, but Denmark--now Mt Gilead--is in Morrow County, then Marion County, and that is where Ebenezer settled, about 1825.] The grandfather died suddenly, while hunting."

AVERY LEONARD, farmer, Attica, one of the early settlers of Venice Township who still survive, was born in Washington County, Penn., July 30, 1798. His parents were natives of Connecticut. The father, Caleb Leonard, was a descendant from the Puritans that landed on Plymouth Rock, and the mother, Sarah (Hale) Leonard, was of English descent, being a daughter of Gideon Hale, who served under Gen. Wolfe, when he fell at the taking of Quebec from the French. His father died at the ripe age of eight-seven, in Washington County, Penn, and the mother in her eighty-second year, in Seneca County, Ohio. Our subject received his education in the common schools, and early learned the blacksmith trade. He was married, in 1820, to Nancy, daughter of Samuel Smith, also a native of Washington County, Penn., being of German and Spanish descent, and who died in 1872 in Seneca County, Ohio. To this union were born nine children--seven sons and two daughters: Samuel H., Sarahann, William F., Verden W., Hiram S., Levi, Avery H., Jonathan and Sarah Angeline. Verden W. was killed by a falling tree in his eleventh year; Sarahann, died in her seventeenth year, and Sarah Angeline at the age of three months. The other six are still living--two in this county and four in Huron County--all having been engaged in farming a part of their lives. Three are still active farmers, and three are ministers of the Gospel. Avery Leonard came to Venice Township, this county, with his family, the year 1834, and settled in the woods, where his children were educated in the log-schoolhouse. In politics the father and sons are all Republicans. The subject of this memoir in religion was raised a Presbyterian, and on Christmas day, 1823, under a deep conviciton of sin, he gave his hand to the Methodist Episcopal Church as a seeker of the pearl of great price, and in the month of June 1824, being in his twenty-sixth year, after seven months of terrible struggle, he realized that he was made a new creature in Christ Jesus. He remained a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church until the Methodist Protestant broke off from the mother church, when he became a member of the Methodist Protestant Church. About a year after locating in this township, he and his companion, with five others, united in forming a Methodist Protestant class in the community where they lived, since which time he has changed his church relation to that of the United Brethren, where he now holds his membership. Mr. Leonard is now in his eighty-eighth year, enjoying a good old age with his son, W.F., with whom he makes his home.

Avery married ²Nancy Smith³ in 1820. Nancy was born about 1800.

Children from this marriage were:

   62 M    i. Samuel Leonard was born about 1822.

General Notes: From History of Seneca County SAMUEL H. LEONARD, farmer, near Attica, was born in Deersville, Harrison Co., Ohio. He is a son of Avery and Nancy (Smith) Leonard. In 1834 he immigrated to this county with his father. Mr. Leonard owns the farm settled by his father, and upon it he now resides. Being the eldest of nine children his education was somewhat neglected, his services being required in the duties of the farm--his instruction in the schoolroom being given principally before the age of nine. Farming has been the calling of his life, and he is the owner of 536 acres of land, 160 acres being in Dakota. October 26, 1854, records the event of his marriage with Mary M. Baily, wo was born in London, England, and was the daughter of Benjamin and Ann (Powel) Baily. Mr. Baily was a member of the "Great East India Tea Company." After the dissolution of the company he came to this country and settled in this township in 1836, where he spent the greater part of the remainder of his life. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard are in the order of their respective ages: Avery F., who married and resides near Pierre, Dakota; Benjamin L., married and farming in Crawford County, Ohio; Nancy J., wife of Victor Neikirk, farmer of this township; Walter Lincoln, killed by the falling of a hayfork July 22, 1882, and Samuel E.; also Mary Ida, Minnie E. and Della M., who are with their parents. In politics Mr. Leonard is a Republican. In ecclesiastical connection Mrs. Leonard is a member of the United Brethren.
