We are descended from Thorndike Deland Hodges in generation seven, son of Mary Osgood Deland and John Hodges. I have transcribed some pertinent excerpts from the book "The Deland Family in America" by Frederick Deland Leete describing Huguenots in America (beware fanciful elaborations) and Philip and Benjamin Deland.

They came toward home and 'met at Squabage the gratest part, and severall came a foott and all the souilders came but a fott pace.' " this affair evidently relates to King Philip's War, 1675-6"

General Notes: Thorndike 2nd, was a member of the firm "Dutch and Deland." When the War of 1812 was declared they had six vessels at sea. Two were confiscated by Napoleon at San Sabastian and another was caught by the British and taken to Halifax. This ruined the firm and plunged Thorndike into debts of which however he paid the last in 1825. In the few remaining years of his life he was not able to accumulate much to leave to his family. "A kind genial man, a welcome companion to everybody" from Deland book.

General Notes: Graduated at Harvard 1857, studied law, and began the practice of his profession in Salem - 1860 census living with family, deemed "lawyer." Then Haverhill till 1862.
Civil War: in August, 1862, he was mustered into the United States Service and became Sergeant of Co. F, 35th Mass. Vol. Inf., being promoted 2nd Lieutenant the following January. In May, 1863, he was discharged for promotion, became Captain of the 35th U.S. Colored Vols., and was mustered out as Brevet Major, Jan'y 15, 1866.
Opened a law office in Boston, then resumed his practice as lawyer in Haverhill, Mass., where he married, which town he represented in the State legislature in 1869. moved to NY 1870, then Elizabeth NJ, back to Mass for last few years.
I did not find him in Haverhill in 1870 census. Griffith Bowen book says daughter Mabel born in NYC in 1868. Or, try NJ? He removed then to Elizabeth, N.J. - in 1880 census family was in Elizabeth 7th Ward, Union County, New Jersey, page 2 dist 2 dist 175 born MA Thorndike occupation Lawyer, 43, Mary W 40 keep house born Ohio, parents born MA Mabel T 12 born Mass (or try NY) Charles B 9 b. 68 M iv. Charles Bowen Hodges Sr. was born on 29 Jun 1870 in Orange, Essex, New Jersey 8 and died on 15 Oct 1947 in Boston Massachusetts, at age 77.
General Notes: He was "of Sewickley PA" a mechanical engineer age 29 at the time of his marriage. MJ thinks he met Imogene while boarding - she was a fellow boarder, or was living unmarried in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1894. Maybe daughter of a boarding house owner. She thinks this could indeed have been in Waterloo.
Graduated from M.E. Stevens Institute 1891. 1895-1926 H.K. Porter Co., Pittsburgh PA, director in later years. "He spent most of his engineering career designing steam locomotives, as all good engineers should." from recollections of John Suffern Hodges "Locomotives for 13 years"
After retiring, became treasurer of Wellesley College. Before moving to Wellesley, they lived in North Andover (first at 18 Weston Road and around 1931 to 2 Denton Road) and Winter Park Florida. At last they moved to Derry, New Hampshire.
On October 23 1947 an obit in "The Townsman" said Mr. Hodges of Winter Park Florida died in Boston after a long period of ill health, and that he had moved there shortly after retiring from Wellesley College Business manager job in 1938. "The funeral service was conducted at St. Andrew's Church Friday afternoon by Rev. Charles W. F. Smith.
