My first Bockius break came from my cousin, Watson Bosler, who has a hand-typed genealogy at the library in Philadelphia. Though he had primarily followed the Quaker lines into which Sarah Jane Bockius married (her father, Samuel Rex Bockius, was born Lutheran and is buried in a Lutheran cemetery but by family legend converted to Quakerism). Bob Buckius was kind enough to fit us in to the Bockius line which goes back to early Germantown.
General Notes: Ludovic died en route to America in 1741 aboard the ship SS Mark from Rotterdam. The mother, three sons and one daughter arrived on Sept 26, 1741 and settled in Germantown.
"It is believed that all Bockius' are descendants of Hieronymus Bock (1498-1554), the famed German botanist/herbalist of the early sixteenth century, who, like many other scholars of that time, Latinized the last name by adding the "ius" suffix. Apparently, this was considered the scholarly thing to do. No genealogy, at least non that I've ever been able to locate, exists to probe or disprove this dogma." (Bob Buckius)
The Bockius family originates in the area along the Rhine River, 25 miles west of Mainz & Worms. In the 1700's the village was called either Ottersheim or Gross-Wintersheim. Today it is known as Ingelheim. Today, there are many Bockius families listed in the current German telephone directory for towns in this area. This area of Germany was known as the Palatinate, and the family of Ludovic Bockius were part of the large Palatine migration to America which occurred in the early-mid 1700's.
Ludovic is also sometimes spelled "Ludovici" & "Lodwick". Bockius has been spelled "Bockejus".
Ludovic's family was probably Protestant (German reformed), considering his marriage to Anna Maria Zwingli, a descendant of the sixteenth century Swiss Protestant reformer.
Ludovic died at sea, aboard the St, Mark, sailing from Rotterdam to Philadelphia. The ship docked at the port of Philadelphia on Sept. 26, 1741.
Admin. Book D, Nov. 8, 1741 shows that Lodovic (Lodwick) died intestate, during the minority of Johannes Godfrey, Peter Lodwick and Johannes Wendall, infants (they were probably in their teens). There is no record of the wife of Lodwick or the son Johann Emanuel.
*Eighteenth century German naming practice - customary to name a son with the first name of "Johannes" if he was to be called by that name, and "Johann" if he were to be called by his middle name.

General Notes: Records show that he emigrated from Germany on the "Edinburgh", arriving in Phila. on Sept. 15, 1749, after his father and siblings left in 1741.
He resided in both West Bethlehem Twp., Washington Co. PA and Frederick Town MD simultaneously. Occupation: Frontiersman, Farmer, Orchard grower.

1759 - Purchased land on the NE side of Main Street, Germantown. Here Godrey was a general storekeeper and stocking weaver.
He and his family were active in the German Reformed Church, Germantown. He was listed as a trustee of Union School, founded 1760, which later became Germantown Academy.
The DAR lists Gottfried as a member of Gerardus Schlatter's Company of Associates of Chestnut Hill during the Revolution. (However, this many have been his son Gottfried, b. 1756)
Gottfried, Philippina Catharina and son John are buried in the Lower Burying Ground, middle section, south of the central path, beginning at the east end to Germantown Avenue.

1780 - After his father's death, Francis Bockius was given the choice of any of his father's stocking frames or looms.
1792 - purchased 3 acres on the Germantown Great Road, next to a lane to Bristol Street.
His father's property and house in Germantown had been deeded to his brother Jacob, who conveyed it to Francis William in 1828, He kept a general store at this property, which was later taken over by his son, F. William Bockius.
Listed as a member of Captain James Irwin's 1st Co., 7th Battalion; and also a member of Geradus Schlatter's Co. of Associators of Chestnut Hill during the Revolution.
One of the organizers of the old Franknlin Fire Company, Germantown.
Member of the Market Square Church, Germantown.
At the time of his death, he apparently had many debts since his properties had to be sold by his sons who were his administrators. There is no record of how he became so deeply in debt.
Franics William, his wife Susanna, and daughters Phillippena Catherine and Barbara are buried at the Lower Burying Ground known as Hood Cemetery, Germantown.

General Notes: Mary Jane Hodges, 69, died February 20 in her home on Old Lighthouse Road, Buxton, North Carolina. Ms. Hodges, daughter of the late Charles Bowen Hodges Jr and Marjorie Atlee Mason Hodges of Shawsheen Village in North Andover, attended Abbott Academy, studied at Bryn Mawr, and took her degree in Fine Arts at the Massachusetts Institute of Art, continuing her studies in Italy and France. She made her career as researcher, reporter, designer, art director and writer at Time Life, Inc. and Readers Digest Books. In retirement she was an avid fisherwoman. She was preceded in death by her sister Helen Hodges Peppler; she is survived by Jane, Matthew and Charles Peppler and Muriel Hall. Memorial services will be held at Ridgewood Cemetery, North Andover on February 27.
