This is a map of Washington County in 1883.  You can see Greenleaf, Kansas on the bottom right.  The Brown family lived in this same area in the same time and that is where some of the Brown family taught school and where Alice Maud Barrett and Lewis Jacob Brown met and married.

Indian Raid in 1868: In 1868 the Indians made another raid through Washington, Cloud, and Republican counties. Their depredations here were confined to thieving. (1893 History of Washington Co.)

The Greenleaf Journal was established by W. H. Besack, of Washington, January 15, 1881. In February he sold to H. A. Moore and J. A. W. Bliss. The paper was enlarged to an eight column folio. In May, 1882, Charles Barrett, its present editor and proprietor, purchased Mr. Moore's interest, and in August, that of Mr. Bliss. The Journal is independent in politics (William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas)
(Charles was the child of John and Charlotte).
