Transcription of Cordelia Hull Phillips – Obituary
Cordelia Hull Phillips, daughter of Benjamin and Phoebe
Hull, was born in Mercer Co. Pa. Sept. 18, 1823. She was one of a family of nine children. All having preceded her, except three
sisters:
Mrs. Harrah of La Rue, Ohio, Mrs. Eaton, of Upper Sandusky,
and Mrs. Scott of Green Leaf, Kansas.
On May 9, 1841 she was united in marriage with William
Phillips and to this union 18 children were born.
From this date until 1869 they lived near Marseliles, Ohio
then moved with their family to Kansas.
In this state they resided until in 1894, when she sustained the loss of
her husband.
Placing her trust in the Lord, she united with the M.E.
Church, at the age of 17 years and when God called her, Tuesday morning April
16 “Grandma” answered in death as she always had in life. “Here I am.”
She having sustained the age of 88 yrs. 7 mo. 28 days.
The greater part of her life was spent in ministering to
others and many there are to call her “blessed” because of her kindness to
them.
For the past 8 years she has been afflicted and suffered
much, but was always patient and enduring, earnestly praying for her children
always having the welfare of her loved ones at heart.
A life fondest remembrance has passed before us.
Though the shadow fall, may we forget the sorrow. The future is beckoning, with its fondest
hopes; may we live in memory of the loved ones gone.
Of her own family, she is survived by seven children [note:
she lost 11 before she died?]: Eliza Dillow of Tole, Oregon, Luelia Blair, of
Edna, Kansas, Arvilla Louden of North Lewisburg, Ohio, Frank of Coffeeville,
Kansas, Randolph of Dewey, Oklahoma, Orin of St. Louis, Missouri; and Harley of
Sacramento, California, all there with 33 grandchildren and 25 great
grandchildren mourn the loss of one who was very dear to them.
We would not call her back, For now she resteth well, No
tear is on her careworn cheek, No sigh her bosom swells. Though the tears flow thick and fast, And
our hearts with grief are riven; we would not call her back to earth, But go to
her in Heaven.
Short funeral services were held at the home of her daughter
Mrs. J. H. Louden, near North Lewisburg, Thursday morning, in charge of Rev
Yeagle and Buckley.
The remains were taken to Rushsylvania where services were
held in the M.E. Church at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Horn and Rev. Alexander.
Interment in Rushsylvania Cemetary.
