PENSION RECORD OF
JOHN ELLIOTT BARRETT (1836 - 1882)
Sergeant, 26th regiment, ohio volunteers, united states army (1861 - 1862)
and CHARLOTTE REYNOLDS BARRETT (1833 - 1918)

This sheds a lot of light on  John and Charlotte's life.  They were married in Ohio and about 1866 they moved to Kansas.  John was a carpenter and attempted to start a business in furniture building but then he decided to farm and they appeared to have purchased a farm near Greenleaf, Kansas.  He was ill from 1862 to his death 20 years later.  He was only 46 and left Charlotte with 4 kids under 16 to raise by herself.  Her 3 older children (including Alice Maud) must have helped her.  She then moved to Oklahoma with the majority of her children.  She died in 1918 in Cheyenne, Oklahoma at the age of 85. Evidently, after his discharge from the Army, he suffered the rest of his life from dysentry and liver problems.  He died at the age of 46.

Washington County, Kansas was and is a very rural area.  Click here for information on Washinton County, Kansas.

VARIOUS AFFIDAVITS:

July 8, 1892 - Flora A. Randall, age 32, stated that John E. Barrett served in military service of the United States Army and was discharged for disability and did not serve after that.

September 24, 1892 - Charles H. Williams and witnessed by Nora H. Gall and Clara B. Gall, age 72 years of Greenleaf, Washington County, Kansas.  That he knew the above named John E. Barrett intimately from 1869 to the time of his death in 1882, and knew him to be a great suffer with chronic diarrhea, jaundice and liver complaint, that he knew these facts from his intimate and frequent association, and that the said Barrett often told him that he contracted all the above diseases while in the United States service in the late war.

June 25, 1892 - Alfred Randall, age 53, stated that he became acquainted with John E. Barrett in 1875.  He was a contractor and was not able to work more that two thirds of his time on account of the chronic dysentry which was contracted in the army.  He bought a farm 80 rods from his in 1879 and saw him nearly every day up to his death and was with him in his sickness. (Kansas, Republic County)

July 7, 1892 - Charles Smith, age 47, he became intimately acquainted with John E. Barrett now deceased about October 1872.  That for two years he was associated with said Barrett as officer and manager of the County Agricultural Society for Washington County, Kansas, and for several years and up to the time of his death saw him frequently and knew his physical condition.  That said Barrett was during all of said time in a weak and sickly condition.  His appearance was pale and emaciated.  He was weal and incapacitated from performing to excess one fourth manual labor and eventually could not labor at all without pain and injury to himself.  He complained frequently of suffering from chronic diarr. which he referred to his service in the Army of the United States although he does not recollect of the said Barrett complaining of liver trouble though he may have done so.

August 15, 1892 - William Frank, age 56, Logan Township, Washington County, Kansas - That he was well acquainted with John E. Barrett for 16 years since 1866 when he became a resident of the town where I lived; Marseilles, Wyandot County, Ohio.  That he moved to Kansas and located in Waterville, Marshall County, Kansas, in the fall or latter part of summer, 1869, where he engaged for a time in manufacturing furniture.  He moved with his family the following spring to Washington County and located near Greenleaf, Washington County, Kansas, where he engaged in farming.  I met him often being neighbors for a long time and while I was engaged in the drug business in Washington, Kansas, often sold him prescriptions for chronic dysentary.  His health however kept failing until November 1, 1882 when he died from the effects of his disease.  He was a man of good sense and ** habits and every way a good citizen.

September 9, 1893 - H. K. Hayt and A.B. Hayt (53 and 50 years of age); we would say in regard to Charlotte Barrett, a widow, and we know that she has not been married since her husband, John E. Barrett, died in November, 1882, we have *** *** to Mrs. Barrett since the death of her husband Mr. John E. Barrett. (they were husband and wife).

April 2, 1891 - Hollis K. Hayt (as above) - States that Charlotte remained unmarried and the children were personally known to him.

July 20, 1893 - John McCausland - John E. Barrett was a bunkmate of mine from our enlistment June 12 or June 13 until I was wounded in the fall of 1861 in August of that year while in the Kanaway Valley, West Virginia.  John E. Barrett contracted diarrea as we were compelled to march through the rain and sleep on the bare ground without shelter or covering not even having a change of clothing.  J.E. Barrett soon got so reduced in strength that he could do no duty was reduced to a skeleton.  In the Spring of 1862, I think in April, I had got able to ride, and having that Barrett was at home I went to see him. I found him reduced in flesh, haggard looking skin and eyes yellow and suffering from diarhea while we wre at supper he had to go out and during the night he went out a number of times.  I am positive he had comp. diareah as we call it; he wrote me several times afterward and always complained of the same trouble.
