BALDWIN [Jr.?], b. unknown.Historical Notes The Baldwins came from the County of Buckinghamshire in England, about 30 miles northwest of London, where they resided in the late 1400's. Their history unquestionably goes back earlier than that and is, at least to some degree, traceable to the 1200's if not earlier. As to the origins of the Baldwin family prior to the 1400's, there are several possibilities. It's interesting, of course, to speculate as to whether the name ever meant "the bald one," but a more factual possibility is that the Baldwins were Normans who came to England in the days of the Norman conquest, perhaps even in 1066 itself. There's a Baldwin family crest from England and also an earlier one from France. The Normans, of course, were originally Vikings. In 911, French Carolingian ruler Charles the Simple had allowed a group of Vikings, under their leader, Rollo, to settle in northern France with the idea that they would provide protection along the coast against future Viking invaders. This proved successful - a very simple solution to a problem - and the Vikings in the region became known as the Northmen from which the name Normandy is derived. Even more likely, though, is the probability that the Baldwin family predates the Norman conquest. The family name appears to have been derived from a given name that existed in England prior to 1066 and is of Anglo-Saxon and Old German origins. The name was "Bealdwine" in Old English and "Baldwine" in Old German, both meaning "bold friend," and one of the given name variations was "Baldewyne" by 1066. The fact that it was a given name in England prior to 1066 does not, of course, rule out Norman French origins since the name was also popular among the Normans and in Flanders in the early Middle Ages. In any event, it ultimately evolved into a surname, probably, like many other names, out of necessity when governments began imposing personal taxes and required surnames in order to distinguish between individuals. The Baldwin family resided in two villages in Buckinghamshire. One village was Chesham, the site of a villa in Roman times. By 1012 it was known as Cæstæleshamm, which is Anglo-Saxon for "the river-meadow at the pile of stones". The other village was Aston Clinton, known in the days of William the Conqueror as Estone, which, in Old English, means "eastern estate." In the early 1200's, Estone passed into the hands of the de Clinton family and became known as Aston de Clinton. Today the village is part of the Town of Aylesbury, the county seat of Buckinghamshire. As an interesting aside, the famous car Aston Martin was named after the village of Aston Clinton and the name of the company's co-founder, Lionel Martin, probably because of the car's success in hill climb competition up nearby Aston Hill. The compiled history currently begins with the ancestor described above, Robert Baldwin, born in Chesham in about 1475. Robert grew up and settled in Aston Clinton with his wife, Agnes Dolte, and they had four sons, one of whom was Richard, born in about 1503 in Aston Clinton, who married Ellen Apuke, and so the line continues. The immigrant ancestor in the Baldwin line being traced herein was John BALDWIN (1619-1681). The first Baldwin in the line to settle in Hopewell Township was Elnathan BALDWIN (1687-1738). -------------------------------------------------------------- Richard BALDWIN (1503-1553) Date and Place of Birth: 1503 - Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England Date and Place of Death: 1553 - Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England Father: Robert BALDWIN (1475-1536) Mother: Agnes DOLTE (b. unknown; daughter of William DOLTE) Spouse: Ellen APUKE (b. about 1507, d. about 1566; parents unknown) Married: 1524 - Resided In: Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England Children: * Henry BALDWIN, b. about 1529, d. The Baldwins were Puritans who settled in Milford, Connecticut in the late 1630's. Specifically, John Baldwin was very likely part of a group led by John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton that initially intended to be part of Massachusetts Bay Colony but decided that Massachusetts Bay was lax in its religious observances. They decided to go elsewhere, and, on February 1, 1639, purchased an area known as "Wepawaug" from Ansantawae, chief sachem (king) of the Paugusset Tribe. More settlers began arriving shortly thereafter and built the town known as Milford. Townspeople played a major role in the development of the America. The location of Milford is in the area at the mouth of the Quinnipiac River, a location considered a "new haven" for the Puritans who settled there, leading to the founding of New Haven, Connecticut. There were many members of the BALDWIN family who arrived in New England in the same general time period, the the BALDWIN name is extensive and spread all over the country. For more general information about the settlement of Connecticut which in all likelihood involved ancestor John BALDWIN (1619-1681), see Wikipedia article concerning New Haven Colony. Hannah PRIMMER, identified in some sources as Hannah Peimmer, was born in about 1818. Her mother's name was Lydia, born in about 1782. Josiah BALDWIN and Hannah PRIMMER were married August 19, 1817 in Hopewell Township. Their children included Fanny BALDWIN, b: ABT 1834; George H. BALDWIN, born about 1840, appears in the 1860 New Jersey census, listed with his parents, but he is not named in estate papers of his father in 1890. There are records of a Private George H. Baldwin serving in the Army who may have deserted July 15, 1864 near Petersburg, Virginia. This may be the reason he was omitted from his father's estate, but Josia's will does mention a grandson named Harry BALDWIN living in Genoa, Illinois. That Harry may have been the son of George H. BALDWIN. -------------------------------------------------------------- Andrew BALDWIN (1798-1871) Date and Place of Birth: May 7, 1798 - Date and Place of Death: August 9, 1871 - Father: David BALDWIN (1742-1834) Mother: Martha CORNELL (b. about 1750, d. 14 Mar 1841, daughter possibly of John CORNELL son of William CORNELL) Spouse #1: Ann HOFF (** More likely she was his Second Wife **) Spouse #2: Sarah REED (1802-1866) {Wife of Andrew BALDWIN} b: 1802 in New Jersey d: 22 Aug 1866 - Buried in Hopewell Child of Andrew Baldwin and Sarah Reed: * David G. Baldwin - 26; Ellen V. Baldwin - 24; Henry W. Baldwin - 1; Saml Wynkoop - 16; Henretta A Ely Wynkoop - 12 In a book entitled "A History of the Old Presbyterian Congregation," there is an entry about a construction project involving the church in Pennington. It indicates that "The church ediface built in 1847-8 was a stately Gothic structure in the style of the eleventh century, with the lancet-arch. It was in imitation of brown freestone, all the old material on the ground being used as a matter of economy. It was some time after the subscription began to be circulated before the work was bugun. On the 5th of August, 1845, the congregation appointed a committee to circulate a subscription paper." In the list of those suscribing, there is an entry for Andrew Baldwin, $105.00. Other family-linked names are Charles Welling, Isaac Welling, George Woolsey, Henry P. Welling, C.L. Wynkoop (family living with Baldwins), and Josiah Baldwin. The Baldwin family has always been closely linked to the Welling name, with several family members having the middle name "Welling." Andrew may have died in Illinois - some records say d. August 09, 1871, Illinois. The records also say m. (1) SARAH REED; m. (2) ANN HOFF. Sarah Reed died in 1866, so Ann was most like his second wife, and they may have moved to or been visiting Illinois when Andrew died in 1871. -------------------------------------------------------------- David G. Resided In: Pennington, New Jersey Children: * Henry ("Harry") Welling BALDWIN (1859-1921) Elizabeth ("Lizzie") W. BALDWIN (1862-1911)Additional Notes On March 29, 1878, Charles and Margaret Fish sold their 140 acre farm on Federal City Road, with its large English barn, for $10,500 to Ellen V. Baldwin, wife of David G. Baldwin. The farm, which had several owners since the family of David and Ellen Baldwin, is now the site of the Mercer County Equestrian Center. The English barn, which was moved, reconstructed, and restored, is now part of the Howell Living History Farm, an educational visitor center maintained by the Mercer County Park Commission. From a book detailing church history, including the Deacons of the Old Presbyterian Congregation of Pennington, available information includes the name of David G. Baldwin indicated to have been Ordained March 6, 1864. Listed Ruling Elders of the Church at Pennington also included Thomas Baldwin, died June 1791, and the names Blackwell, Pittenger, Hunt, etc., all familiar names linked to the history of the Baldwin family. -------------------------------------------------------------- Henry ("Harry") Welling BALDWIN (1859-1921) Used the name "Harry" rather than "Henry," and was generally known as "Harry W. Commissioned in the Supply Corps in 1906. Served with U.S. Navy railway batteries at the Aisne-Marne and Meuse-Argonne offensives in World War I. Graduated from the Naval War College in 1937. Officer in Charge of Naval Cost Inspection Service August 1941-June 1943, then Director until retired in December 1944. Became a Rear Admiral (2 Stars) in September 1942. Recalled to active duty as Director of the Cost Inspection Service 1944-1950. Retired again in June 1950 as a Vice Admiral (3 Stars). Buried at Section 3, Site 1464, Arlington National Cemetery. See page on the Arlington National Cemetery Website. Frank Baldwin was married to Helen GOLDEN from Pennington. Although detailed information is not currently available, the Goldens appear to have been related to the branches of the Stout family and possibly the Hunts, the Drakes, and the Blackwells. Helen Golden may also have been related to the Wyckoff family. Frank and Helen resided mostly in Washington, D.C. and Quincy, Massachusetts, although Frank's navy career obviously caused him to travel considerably. Frank Baldwin and Helen Golden had a son believed to have been named Bradford Golden BALDWIN. Bradford died at a young age while he was a student at Purdue University from complications related to a staph infection that began as a blister on his heel. Helen predeceased Frank. She and Bradford are buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Ewing Township. After Helen died and Frank retired, Frank lived his remaining years at the Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. and is, as indicated above, buried at Arlington.Additional Notes Harry was born on farm of his grandparents, Andrew BALDWIN (1798-1871) and Sarah REED (1802-1866). His parents, David G. BALDWIN (1834-1894) and Ellen V. WOOLSEY (1835-1898) later purchased their own farm (see notes above), so Harry grew up first on his grandparents' farm and then the farm of his parents. The farm eventually owned by Harry Baldwin and his son, Charles BALDWIN (1889-1946), after him was known as "Rose Lane Farm." Harry turned the property into a horse farm, and Charles subsequently made it a dairy farm. Whether the property was in the family before Harry is currently a question. It is not the same as the one owned by Harry's parents, David and Ellen (see David G. BALDWIN (1834-1894)), but it could have been the one owned by his grandparents, Andrew and Sarah (see Andrew BALDWIN (1798-1871)). The farm house is still there. Most of the property was sold by Charles BALDWIN, however, and became the site of Central High School of Hopewell Township. The farm, known as "Rose Lane Farm" because of the roses that lined the lane to the farm, is a well known location. You can find the location on good maps identified as "Baldwin Corner." The farm house was built long before the Revolution and during the Revolution, as far as we can determine, was occupied by a doctor who saved the life of James Madison, later President of the United States, who was then a junior officer on George Washington's staff and had been seriously wounded during the Battle of Princeton. The doctor wasn't going to help initially because he thought they were British, but he was eager to help when he found out they were Americans and even accompanied the army to the next battle. The next door neighbors at one point were the Schwartzkopfs - the family General Norman Schwartzkopf, "Stormin' Norman," who grew up there. His father was the head of the New Jersey State Police, heading it when Bruno Richard Hauptman was arrested and executed for the kidnapping of the Lindberg baby. Harry probably later separated from his wife, Julia Ann VOORHEES (1858-1941). She owned a rooming house in town at one point in time. At some point Harry talked to his friend, John Morrell (1865-1935), who was a blacksmith, telling him that he only had two sons (Frank and Charles) and John had a lot of daughters, so how about, he asked, sending me one of your daughters, so John said which one do you want and Harry said "I'll take Edith." Thus Edith Grace MORRELL (1892-1940) came to live at the Baldwin house and eventually married Charles BALDWIN (1889-1946). Harry was killed in an automobile accident. His death was reported on the front page of the Sunday New York Times. Harry's car collided on Pennington Road with a car driven by Dr. J. W. Richards of Pennington. Harry's car overturned and he was killed instantly. Dr. Richards was uninjured. In Harry's car were Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Primmer of Trenton. Mr. Primmer was uninjured, while Mrs. Primmer sufferred a broken leg. The Primmers were relatives of the Baldwins - Josia Baldwin, the half brother of Harry's grandfather Andrew BALDWIN (1798-1871), was married to Hannah Primmer, and the Baldwin and Primmer families were closely linked over the years. Harry's date of death is reported in some sources as January 18, 1921, rather than January 15th. Regarding the "Welling" name, in a book entitled "A History of the Old Presbyterian Congregation," described in more detail under Andrew BALDWIN (1798-1871), the subscription list indicates an entry for Andrew Baldwin and also includes the following other family-linked names Charles Welling, Isaac Welling, George Woolsey, Henry P. Welling, C.L. Wynkoop (family living with Baldwins), and Josiah Baldwin. -------------------------------------------------------------- Charles BALDWIN (1889-1946) |
