Background
Between 1717 and 1734, seven censuses provide researchers
with information about the people who lived in
Port-Toulouse, Île Royale. One of these seven censuses is
confined to Acadian families living in the community, while
the remaining six list the entire population of
Port-Toulouse.
Because the parish records of Port-Toulouse are lost, these
censuses become all the more important in identifying the
families that lived there. The originals of these records
are housed in the National Archives of France, Archives of
the Colonies. The Centre d'études acadiennes, Université de
Moncton, owns microfilm copies of these censuses, and
Stephen White, the Centre's genealogist, graciously provided
me with copies of the original seven records.
These records, hand-written in early 18th century French,
are at times difficult to read and I needed assistance not
only in translating the documents, but in properly
identifying individuals and associating them with their
appropriate family units. Stephen White agreed to
participate in a joint effort to make this primary source
information available to researchers via the internet. The
working process was long and tedious and I sincerely
appreciate his considerable time and patience. I can assure
you that the documents herein would never have become
available in this way without Steve’s active participation
and his incomparable knowledge of 17th and 18th century
families.

For those of
you who have not met Stephen White, fellow genealogist Lucie
LeBlanc Consentino donated his picture for use on this web
site. Lucie took this picture in Steve's office, the Centre
d'études Acadiennes, Université de Moncton in 1999.

And, for those
of you who may not know Lucie Consentino, she is the owner
and creator of a comprehensive site about the history of
French Canadians and Acadians. In fact, that’s where I found
this picture of Lucie to share with you. Take a look!

will take you to the specific early census returns.
