M 3 ex K 20 (----), M 4 ex K 21 (----), both by Armstrong Whitworth.
Launching dates of M 2 - 4 not reported; these three boats may not be finished.
- Few details available. Designed by Admiralty; reported to be double-hulled type. Dimensions : about 200 x 20 x 10 feet.
- Guns : 1 - 12 inch, 35 cal., 1 - 3 inch AA.
- Machinery: Type not known, but reported to be Diesel engines. Oil fuel: ?? tons. Other details as Table.
Gunnery Notes.- 12 inch believed to be one of those removed from old Majestic Class of Battleships, firing a 520 lb projectile. No turntable, but high-angle elevation. Reported that gun is loaded and laid to high angle elevation; then boat is dived to about 12 - 20 feet, leaving muzzle of 12 inch gun above water, and periscopes. There is a bead sight on gun-muzzle, so that gun can be sighted by periscope and fired when running at shallow submersion. To re-load, it is necessary to return to surface.
General Notes.- Begun under War Emergency Programme. These "Submarine Monitors" are a unique design, but reports are not available of M 1's performance during War, so that their practical worth is a matter of conjecture.
