*These are Minelayers.

  • All Admiralty wing-tank type. Built under Emergency War Programme. First British type of submarine with internal sub-division by w.t. bulkheads and with beam tubes.
  • Dimensions: 180 (p.p.), 181 (o.a.) x 22.5 x 12.5 feet.
  • Tubes: 3 to 5 - 18 inch, viz., 2 bow, 0, 1, or 2 beam, 1 stern.
  • Minelayers marked * have no beam tubes and carry about 20 mines.
  • Diesel engines: 2 sets of Vickers, Sulzer, Carels, M.A.N. or other types. Oil: 45 tons. Other details as Table.

Notes.- Performed splendid work during War, and proved most satisfactory. Heavy losses sustained by this class are an index to the arduous work they performed, 1915-18. E 2, 4 (of E 1 -6 type), 11, 12, 29, 43, 56 (all E 7-20 and later type), put on Sale List, 1919 ; the others detailed above will be sold off as new L boats come into service.

War Losses.- E 1,* 3, 5, 6 (E 1 - 6 type), E 7, 8,* 9,* 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19,* 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 34, 36, 37, 47, 49, 50 (all E 7 - 20 and later type).

*Scuttled in Baltic


One old and small boat. C 4, is being kept for experiments with Edison batteries. but will be sold when tests are finished.
