Notes.

Total over Table is composed thus:- 31 Leaders (+ 2 building?), 339 Destroyers (+ 17 building and completing?) = 370. In the above Table, dimensions and H.P. in some classes have been simplified to an average for the class. Dates refer to the time the first boat was laid down and the last boat completed. Launching dates are given in description by classes on subsequent. Pages.

The following Notes are for Flotilla Leaders and Destroyers from M up to V and S Classes:- Searchlights, 1 - 20 or 24 inch, and 2 - 10 inch signalling. In the War Leaders, V and S boats, 20 - 24 inch searchlights are controlled on target in conjunction with guns. Also directors for tubes.

Nearly all boats (inclusive of some pre-war boats) carry 2 depth charge throwers, depth charges and PV's. of H.S. types. Abdiel, some V and R boats used as Minelayers.

Features which help in picking out War Design boats are thus:- Admiralty boats have round and slightly hollowed sterns (except Warwick, mined and re-built with straight stern). Thornycroft boats have straight stern. Yarrow boats (from Later Yarrow M's) have strongly sloping sterns. White boats sometimes have strongly ribbed funnels ; Hawthorn Leslie boats caged tops to funnels without caps ; Thornycroft boats have usually one big flat-sided funnel, and all funnels have caged caps. Thornycroft boats stand high out of water and look big. Yarrow boats have very sharp bows. When towing Kite Balloons, after mast is removed and W /T. Aerials are spread to two poles abeam and between tubes.
