Encroachment of the Sea at the Pilot Station
|
At the Pilot station on Stradbroke Island the land has been washed away within the last two years upwards of 100 feet, and the sea is daily making further inroads on the land. The Pilot's house is getting into rather a dangerous proximity to the ocean, being separated from it only by a narrow slip of sand, of some eighteen to twenty feet in width. The pilot (old Jemmy Hexton) is, I believe, making preparations to cut and run from his moorings, lest old father Neptune should " walk into his coil" some windy day, without special invitation. Whilst speaking of the pilot station, it is to be hoped that when new quarters are erected for the Pilot, they will be where his services can be made available for vessels running for the northern entrance to the Bay.
