Introduction

Our Whitefoord ancestral line falls at the very beginning of Scottish church records, and very few births that early were recorded. There were other Whitefoord families in Kilbirnie Parish contemporary to our Hew and Jeane, including William Whitefoord and Issabell Allane who had daughters Jeane and Issabel born 1691 and 1693, and Robert Whitefoord and Janet Wylie who had a daughter Mary born 1699. While William, Hew and Robert were probably all related, the connections are invisible because of the absence of Whitefoord parochial records prior to about 1665 in the parish.
In 1691 the Hearth Tax for Kilbirnie lists both a Robert Whyteford and a William Whytfoord, the latter taxed for two hearths, but Hew doesn't appear in that record. This probably indicates that he was at that time unmarried and living in his parents' home, but we have no knowledge of who those might have been. There is an extracted IGI record of a marriage 9 Jan 1690 in Kilbirnie between and William Whitefoord and Issabell Allane, which might be the William of the Hearth Tax,
Kilbirnie lies some eight or ten miles inland north of the towns of Kilwinning, Ardrossan and Stevenston where our Brown lineage was located. An online History of Kilbirnie states that in the mid-eighteenth century Kilbirnie was an isolated parish of farmers and farm workers, cut off from the outside world by lack of good roads. In 1740 there were only three houses in the village. "So Kilbirnie was cut off and was seldom visited by strangers; more than that, it had a bad reputation as a place of rough manners and uncouth speech." (But see the note below about the church there.) Change did not begin until a road was built into Kilbirnie in 1766.

Hew Whitefoord  &  Jeane Mackie
Hew 1 , Janet 2 Top

Hew Whitefoord was born about 1670 in Kilbirnie?, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Hew was married to Jeane 12 Aug 1697 in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Jeane Mackie was born in Kilbirnie?, Ayrshire, Scotland.

The marriage of Hew Whitefoord appears in the the "Kilbirnie Parish Registers", but his profession and the surname of his wife are difficult to read:

The IGI extracted record [M115962] for Kilbirnie puts Jeane's name as Aitkme, however, from later records of their children, particularly that of James, his profession is clearly that of a weaver, and Jeane is more clearly Mackie or Macky. From their daughter Jeane's birth record in 1698 it can be seen that Hew (Hugh in that record) lived in Lochridge in Kilbirnie Parish. East Lochridge, today, is a little more than a mile northeast of the center of the town of Kilbirnie, and just above the north end of Kilbirnie Loch. By 1713, when James was born, they had moved to Hourat in Dalry Parish, although the baptism record indicates they still attended the Kilbirnie church. South Hourat (sometimes Howrat) is some three miles southwest of East Lockridge, just across the parish border.
On the same web site that supplied the derogatory remark above about the village of Kilbirnie is shown a photograph of the carved wooden pulpit at Auld Kirk in that town. The beauty of this pulpit effectively belies the description of the people as uncouth. The web page says this pulpit was carved in 1620 (the church itself being older), so this is the very pulpit our Whitefoord ancestors saw in church some four centuries ago.

The 13 year gap between Janet and James argues that there were probably other children who were not baptised, a not unusual situation in that time and place.
As an aside regarding names, there was a Hugh Whitford who married a Jean Mackie in Kilbirnie on 12 Jun 1808, and they had a daughter Janet born 9 Sep 1815. Over one hundred years later, in the same town!

2    Whitefoord, Janet was baptised 17 Mar 1700.
3    Whitefoord, James was baptized 28 Jun 1713 in Kilbirnie.
There was another James Whiteford(sp?) born in Kirbirnie a couple of months earlier, on 12 Apr 1713, to Malcolm Whiteford and Jamet Orr.
4    Whitefoord, Mary was baptized 22 Jan 1716 in Kilbirnie.

Janet Whitefoord  &  David Gulliland
Hew 1 , Janet 2 Gulliland Top

Janet Whitefoord was baptized 17 Mar 1700 in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Janet was married to David 6 Aug 1723 in Kilbirnie.
David Gulliland was baptized 23 Jun 1689 in Kilbirnie.  He was the son of David and Agnes (Whitefoord) Gulliland.

Aside from his baptism, marriage and fatherhood, I know nothing else of this second generation Gulliland ancestor of ours.
Janet's name at her own birth was spelled Whitefoord, but at the birth of her daughter Agnes her name was spelled Whiteford.
