bullet  Research Notes:

Christian was probably born in Pennsylvania. His father might have emigrated from Germany.

Christian would have been at a prime military age in 1777. The Pennsylvania Militia was organized in March 17, 1777 and required compulsory enrollment of all able -bodied white males between the ages of 18 and 53.

A "Christian Haas" or "Christian Haus" served on active duty in the Third Pennsylvania Regiment. The 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment was raised, on December 9, 1775 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for service with the Continental Army. The regiment saw action during the Battle of Valcour Island, Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, Battle of Monmouth, and the Battle of Springfield. The regiment was furloughed, on June 11, 1783, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and disbanded on November 15, 1783.

A "Christian Hass" was on inactive duty in the Lancaster Co. Militia.

Although he lived nearby and was of similar age, the following Christian Haas is undoubtedly a different person:
A "Christian Haasse" served on active duty in the Northampton Co. Pennsylvania Militia, during the Revolutionary War. He was substituting for David Brucker. This Christian Haas is depicted as an early settler of Hampshire Co. having acquired land due to his service in the Revolution. He moved to the South Branch of the Potomac River in Hampshire Co., (West) Virginia. Shown at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas/lotsofnames/haas/haasfederal.html.
Christian Haas #S 5,478, Rev War Service in VA: Christian Haas, a resident of the South Branch of the Potomac River in Hampshire Co., appeared in Open Court on 18 Aug 1832 filing for Rev War Pension. He was about 76 years old and was born in Strasburg, Germany. Before moving to Virginia, he lived in Northampton Co. PA. He served 7 years as a private. Pension granted. His military service is also shown at http://www.footnote.com/image/21866887/#21866887. He appears in Hampshire Co. as Christian Haass in the 1830 US census and as Christian Hass in the 1840 US census. This same person was shown as Christian Hass, 88 years old, living with Peter Hass in Hampshire Co., Virginia in the 1840 Census of Pensioners. That has to be a different person than the one herein documented who appears in the 1830 and 1840 Rockingham Co., Virginia census. Oct. 30, 1790, a Johann Christian Hasse (Christian Hase in the 1790 census) married Anna Maria Demuth at the Moravian Church at Bethlehem, Allen Twp., Northampton County, Pennsylvania. On July 10, 1793, Maria Hasse married Joseph Oerter in the same church.

A Christian Hause was married at St. James Episcopal Church, Lancaster Co., PA on Oct 6, 1792. That was probably the Christian Hass shown in the 1800 census in Conestoga, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. He was born after 1755 and was probably another person since the marriage was well after Christian Jr. was born.

In the 1790 and 1800 censuses, a Christian Hass was in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania where Christian's son was born in 1784. That is probably this Christian.

A Christian Haas was in Reading, Berks Co. in the 1790 and 1800 census. He seems to have been born on 17 March 1758 and married in Robeson Twp in 1787, wife's name unknown. They had eight children. She died at the age of 38 years. Christian then married Mary MacKardenon, March 1798. They had three children. This is probably not this Christian.

The 1782 Rockingham Personal Property Tax List does not have a Christian Haas/Hass/etc. Neither the 1790 nor the 1800 census are available for Virginia.
It is likely that Christian moved his family to Virginia between 1800 and 1809. That was after Rockingham Co. was created from Augusta Co. in 1778. Although the name Haws and Hawes are recorded in Augusta Co. before then, it is unlikely that they are relatives due to the then current spelling of their names.

The 1810 census shows "Christian Hause, Sen." in Rockingham Co., Virginia -- 1 male and 1 female over 45 years of age living adjacent to Christopher Hause, Jr. and his family.. In the next household is Israel Hause (probably a son of Christian Sr.'s.) -- 1 male and 1 female between 26 & 45 years of age and one male under 10.

The 1820 census shows "Christian Hawse" in Rockingham Co., Virginia (page 141) --one male and one female over 45 years of age; farmer living adjacent to Christopher Hawse, Jr. and his family... Israel Hawse is also listed in the next household -- 1 male and 1 female between 26 & 45 years of age, 1 male under 10, one male between 10 & 16, and 1 female under 10; farmer.

The 1830 census shows "Christopher Hause, Sr." in Rockingham Co., Virginia (page 222) --one male and one female between 70 and 80 years of age living adjacent to Christopher Hause, Jr. and his family. The next household shown is Christina Hause -- 1 male between 15 & 20, 1 male between 20 & 30, and 1 female between 40 & 50.

From the Revolutionary War pension file for John Krim at http://www.footnote.com/image/24654596/:

The deposition of Christian Hawse Senr. who being duly sworn testifies that he was well acquainted with John Krim before the Revolutionary War - and when it commenced - and knows that he was in a company of Riflemen commanded by Captain Andrew Bare - between one and two months - from the time said company marched from Lancaster County Pennsylvania in 1776 until when at the Brazen or Blazing Stars, New Jersey [Blazing Star is now Rossville on Staten Island, New York] - he, the said John Krim enlisted in Col. Boyds regiment of the Flying Camp under Capt. Rudolph Stoddler [Rudolph Statler] - for eight months and affiant believes he served the time out as far as he knows He also testifies, that he, (affiant) [there is no record of Christian Hawse having been on active duty, let alone an officer] was an officer in said Capt. And. Bare's company - during the service of said John Krim in said company - and that the present applicant for an increased pension is the same John Krim who served as above stated.
SignChristian Hawse
State of Virginia, County of Rockingham
This day Christian Hawse Senr came before me and took an oath to the truth to the above deposition - and I certify that he is a man of truth and entitled to full confidence.
Given under my hand as a Justice of the Peace for said County, this 23rd day of May 1834

The testimony that the above written Samuel Coots magistrate authorized to administer oaths and take acknowledgements, etc. in the state of Virginia at the above date 23rd May 1834 - and that the name Samuel Coots subscribes to the forgoing certificate
It appears to be his usual signature - I have hereunto affixed my seal of Office, and subscribed say value and quality as Clerk of the County of Rockingham Virginia at Harrisonburg this 24th day of June 1834.
H. J. Gambill Clerk of Rockingham County Virginia

The 1840 census shows a person between 80 -90 years of age living with Christian Hawse Jr. in Rockingham Co.

On 6 Oct 1848 Christian Hawse, Sr. sold a 41 1/2 -acre parcel on Brocks Creek to Abraham Zerkle for $1. Christian had bought this parcel on 25 April 1805 from Peter Shoemaker.

In the 1849 land tax record for Rockingham County, Christian Haws Sr. owned 77 acres on Muddy Creek -- 5 miles NW of the Courthouse in an area called "Brush".

The Heartland, Rockingham County, p189: "A rough and hilly area between Linville Creek and Little North Mountain was early known as 'The Brush'". Local residents say that this had an area that had not been considered worth farming and was covered with scrub vegetation.

The 1850 census shows "Christian Haws" in Harrisonburg Twp., Rockingham Co., Virginia (page 047) -- 98 years old, farmer, born in Pennsylvania, living with his son, Christian Jr.

Rockingham Co., Virginia death record says that "Christian Hawse" was 100 years, 4 months, & 12 days old and that he was born in "Dry Fork". (This might refer to the Dry Fork district of present-day Pendleton Co., West Virginia. Pendleton Co. was created in 1787 from parts of Augusta, Harding and Rockingham counties).

Due to the proximity of Rockingham Co. to Hardy Co., (West) Virginia where Peter Hause/Hawse (1755 - bef. 1818) lived, it is likely that they were related. They were born two or three years apart, so they might have been brothers. 6 10 12 13 14 15 16

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

• Rockingham Co. was formed: Rockingham Co. was created from part of Augusta Co, 1778, Augusta Co., Virginia.

Christian married Maria Margaret Hinkel, daughter of Leonard Hinkle and Maria Elizabeth Ziegenfuss.1 2 (Maria Margaret Hinkel was born in May 1766 in Tohickon, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania 10 17 18 and was baptized on 5 Aug 1766 in Lutheran Church, Tohickon, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania 10.)

bullet  Marriage Notes:

That Marie Margaret Hinkle was this Christian Haas's wife is speculative. One genealogy researcher reports that Christian's wife was named "Margaret". Additionally, the birth record of Christian's son, Christian, says that the mother's name was "Margaret". There is no evidence yet found that his wife was Marie Margaret Hinkle other than the mention of Christian Haus in Leonard Hinkle's will. However, the churches that they attended in Bucks Co. were only about 7 1/2 miles apart. 19 20
