Julius Caesar of Rome

Considered Rome's greatest genius.

As a young man captured by pirates, who demanded 20 talents, he offered 50, because he felt he was worth more. A messenger sent to Miletus for the money. Caesar joked with the pirates and said he would hang them some day. A few weeks after his release he returned and put them all to death.

66 BC The people of Rome loved his high spirit and he made them happy with the fantastic Circus Maximus.

Senators failed to understand his scheme and thought he was only being wasteful. He was out to reform Rome and wanted the people behind him.

59 BC He formed a political alliance with the wealthy Crassus and popular Pompey. This alliance aided he to be elected consul.

58 BC He left Rome to govern Gaul (France). Gaul gave him the chance to prove his leadership skills. The soldiers loved and trusted him. While he was away Crassus was killed.

55 BC He crossed the Rhine to curb Germanic invasions.

55 BC Julius Caesar raided Britain. Romans provided the first written evidence of Scotland

54 BC Julius Caesar raided Britain and started a Roman settlement.

52 BC He put down a Gallic uprising.

Pompey sided with Caesar's enemies and the Senate ordered him to disband his army.

49 BC Jan 10, he crossed the river Rubicon the border, between his territory and Rome's. Which effectively declared war on Rome.

Pompey fled to Greece, with the Roman fleet.

Caesar took the Roman treasury and the control of Rome. War followed for five years.

48 BC Caesar after being victorious in Spain, sailed to Greece and defeated Pompey at Pharsalus. Pompey fled to Egypt and was murdered.

After Caesar arrived in Egypt he placed Cleopatra on Egypt's throne.

He marched on Asia Minor and claimed victory on Pontus. He sent a message to the Senate, "Veni, vidi, vici" (I came, I saw, I conquered).

47 BC in the Fall of the year, He went back to Rome.

Cato tried to raise forces in Africa, and Caesar crushed them.

46 BC He went to Spain and defeated Pompey's forces led by his Pompey's sons.

44 BC Caesar all powerful, set out to rule and reform Rome.

44 BC March 15th, the Ides of March, Sixty senators including his friend Brutus, conspired to kill him.

As the senators struck he uttered the famous "Et tu, Brute?" (You too, Brutus?). He fell dead at the foot of Pompey's statue. Caesar's nephew Octavian became ruler of Rome.
