Wilson, James Ellery
Justifiable homicide was the verdict of Coroner,
B.L. Medicus, in the death of James Ellery Wison, 48, at the hands of his
brother, Everett Ross Wilson, 47. Ellery's throat was cut by his
brother, Everett, wielding a corn knife, after the older brother had threatened
to kill the whole family and burn their bodies. The slaying occurred
at the parents home; Mr. & Mrs. John S. Wilson, 4 miles south of Gravois
Mills and a mile west of Highway 5. After the tragedy, which occurred
following a night and day of heavy drinking done by Ellery Wilson, Everett
Wilson Voluntarily surrendered himself to the Sheriff, Oscar Hughes.
He was not held following the coroners verdict. Medicus said that
witnesses told him Ellery Wilson came home at dawn Sunday, intoxicated
and making threats against the family. He brought home 3 pints of
whiskey, Medicus said, and drank them before noon. To avoid trouble,
Everett Wilson told the coroner, he stayed away from the house until nearly
1 o'clock. When Ellery began throwing rocks at the front door and
his father was unable to calm him, Everett said he went out the back door,
and came around the house. Ellery hit him in the face, he said, with
a rock and tried to slash him with a knife, whereupon Everett snatched
up a corn knife from under the steps and cut his brothers throat.
Everett Wilson's account was corroborated by his parents and testimony
of Mr. & Mrs. J.M. Mabry of Boonville, who were guests in the home.
Ellery who was not married, at one time spent 13 months in the state hospital
in Nevada, Mo. He lived on the farm with his parents and brother.
At the funeral his father suffered a heart attack. Funeral by Rev.
Nelson Sachs, Buried in Silvey cemetery.
