Calton, John Edward
John Edward Calton, 81, died unexpectedly on Friday,
May 4, at thehome of his son, Aubrey Calton, of Versailles.
He was born in Camden County on March 5, 1892, the son of the late Richard
and Talitha Hibdon Calton. In July, 1917 he was married to
Miss Hattie McCasland, who survives at the home.
Mr. Calton was a veteran of World War I. Surviving
are his wife, six sons, Aubrey and John Calton, of Versailles, Ben Calton,
Olean, Jim, Roy and Lonnie Calton, Russellville; six daughters, Mrs. Elsie
Tryon, Barnett, Mrs. Broox Sullesn, Eunice Calton, Alice Calton and Mrs.
Anna Wells, of Eldon, Mrs. Rosie Howser, Rocky Mount; two brothers, Cleve
Calton, Versailles and Charles Calton, Barnett; twenty-six grandchildren,
two great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Union Baptist Church at Rocky Mount at 2
p.m. on Sunday, May 6, the Rev. J.N. DeLong and Rev. Mel Burnett officiating.
Grandsons of Mr. Calton served as pallbearers. Interment was in Versailles
cemetery with funeral arrangements by the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home.
