I think William was their father. William Spurlock and Leah Spurlock were the children of Miles & Francis. Wil and Leah were cousins. Her name may have been Lemiah."

Written report from Ken Haas, 1990: Chloe Springston of Elkins AR sent me the following data: The first Herriman in Madison Co AR was there as early as 1838, he probably returned to TN and brought his family back to Madison Co where he d. 1849. His family was there in 1850. His name may have been Samuel, but that is not certain. His wife may have been Sarah Ball or Bayley or Bogle. A known son was Joseph M. Herriman b.6 Jul 1826 Wilson Co TN, d.2 Sep 1913 Madison Co AR, m.Elizabeth Henderson. Joseph M. and Elizabeth had 3 known children: John W. b.1856, Miles M. b.1859 & Susan R. b.1868. Now, why are these people naming children for Miles and Susan Spurlock ? The above John W. m. Elizabeth/Bettie Lou Spurlock, d/o John M. and S.J.Spurlock. She was b.6 Mar 1857 in TN, d. 23 Oct 1921 in Madison Co AR. In the 1870 Warren Co TN census (just before leaving for Arkansas), Miles had an Elizabeth age 13 in his household, and his own daughters Caroline age 30 and Elizabeth age 28. Was Elizabeth b.1857 a daughter of one of the "spinster" daughters of Miles?

"The Case of the Fiddle" By Ernest Spurlock P.O. Box 298 Huntsville, ARK 72740
My sisters and I have been trying for several years to find out who were the parents of out Great, Great, Grandfather, Miles Spurlock, who was born in Eastern Kentucky but latter moved to Cannon and Warren Counties in Tennessee. About 1870 he moved to Northwest Arkansas with three of his sons and two daughters. One son was already here and one son and one daughter remained in Tennessee. (Note by Bill Spurlock - The daughter mentioned latter went to Arkansas as well) One of his sons who came with him returned to Tennessee.
During our search among the relatives, we heard of a fiddle with the name "Jesse" written on it that came with the Miles Spurlock family from Tennessee. We gave it little attention at the beginning because of the time lapse, guessing it had probably been sold or even used as firewood by someone not intrested in the musical instrument. We did trace our ancestors back to Kentucky and found a Jesse, who was a son of William, who was old enough to be the father of Miles, but no proof could be found.
One of Miles daughters, who came with him to Arkansas, was an old maid named Caroline (called Aunt Dine). Aunt Dine lived with her father and mother, Susanna Sewell, untill her death. Susanna died in 1879 and Miles in 1886, both being buried at Bowen Cemetery at Aurora, Arkansas. After their death, Aunt Dine moved in with her younger sister, Rebecca Spurlock Sullins and lived with her untill her death. My sister and I began to think that if there was a fiddle, it probably was taken by Aunt Dine to the Sullins home, and might possibly be in the hands of one of the Sullins Descendants. We hoped it might contain more information than just a name.
About the middle of March this year I attended the funeral of a very good friend of mine, Mr. T.C. Anderson, who had married a cousin of mine, Ada Sullins, who is a Great, Great Granddaughter of Rebecca Spurlock Sullins. LAtter in the evening I had a chance to ask Ada about the fiddle. Her awnser was, " Yes, I know where it is, and it has the name "Jesse" written on it, and my cousin who has it is here." At that time I met Ruth Sullins Kendrick, a cousin of mine, and the Great, Great Granddaughter of Rebecca Spurlock Sullins. Ruth lives in Springdale, Arkansas, only 28 miles from my home. Ruth told me there was a name on the fiddle, but it was "James" instead of "Jesse". My wife and I received an invitation to come over and see the fiddle, and needless to say that curiosity prevailed, and within the week we made the trip.
The fiddle is close to 200 years old, needs some repair, but can be madi into a beautiful piece by the right repairman. Inside the fiddle is a maker's tag that states " ANTONIUS STRADIVATIUS, CREMONENLIS, FACIEBAT, ANNO 1736." . I assume the above is Italian but not knowing anything about fiddles it meand nothing to me. (Note by Bill Spurlock - After calling a Violin repairmar, I was informed that this is a reproduction of a Stravivatius and not the real thing.) Written on the lid of the case in longhand was not Jesse or James, but the following "Mr. Miley Spurlock was born May 8, 1804, purchased on the day of his birth."
We were disappointed that the writing did not contain the names of the parents of Miley nor the giver of the instrument, but we did find out that Miles was either named Miley or at least was called by the name of Miley. We have wondered about his correct name since one of his sons was named Joe Miley (Note by Bill Spurlock - This was Joseph C. Spurlock who was called or changed his name to Joe Miley.) and a number of his descendants have either Miley as a first name or or a middle name. However, my sister that on some of the census records he was listed as Miles Spurlock. In that day and time childern were named after a close relative, father, mother, or grandparents.
Another intresting thing about this name being Miley insted of Miles is that we made a trip to Blues Hill, Short Mountain, Tennessee, a few years ago and met a relative who gave us directions to Miley's former farm which was located close to a small creek named "Miley's Branch" after Miley Spurlock. We enjoyed finding the farm and walking around it, although the original house had been replaced, and wondered about the lives of our ancestors who lived there at one time. It made us really wonder why the family had left such a good farm to migrate to the mountainous country of Northwest Arkansas. No doubt had lost the farm after the Civil War because Sterling Spurlock Brown wrote to my father that the Spurlock Family had come on hard times.
Now we think our Great, Great Grandfather's name was Miley Spurlock, we are still looking for the names of his parents and would appreciate help from anyone who might have some information regarding Miley or Miles Spurlock."
The letter that came with this was dated April 29 1993. In it Ernest mentioned that his sister, Norma Keeter had passed away about a year ago, but had finished a history on the family. I now have a copy of this family history in my possession.
