5. OBITUARY

Zaccheus H. Hobbs was born in Indiana March 20, 1841. He died at his home in Toronto February 22, 1913, age 71 years, 11 months and 2 days. In 1870 he came with his family to Altoona, Kansas and soon after to Woodson county where he lived for two years, then to Greenwood County.

Afterward he moved to Scott county, where he lived a year and then returned to Greenwood county and afterward to Woodson county where lived until he died.

On January 29, 1859, he was married to Miss Mahala Cummings (Cummins) and to them were born ten children. His wife died January 15, 1907. On Nov. 12, 1907 he was married to Mrs. Mary A. Smith, who, with six sons and one daughter, survives to mourn his loss. He enlisted in the civil war in Co. D. 81st Indiana Vols. Inf.., July 26, 1862. On Feb. 11, 1864 he was transferred to the (110th) 2nd battery Vet. Reserve Corps, and was honorably discharged August 29, 1865, having taken part in some of the severest conflicts of the war. When a young man he united with the Christian Church. Afterwards he united with the fellowship of the Baptist church. This fellowship he held at the time of his death. He was a good citizen and always helpful to others.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his late home, conducted by Rev. J. H. Oliver and the members of the G. A. R. The body was lain to rest in the East side cemetery.

1. The History of the Steam Boat on the Muscatatuck River by Clyde Sutton son of John H. Sutton

The steam boat was built by John H. Sutton in 1900 to 1911 and operated by him on the Muscatatuck Rivre. Mr. Sutton used the boat in his logging and lumber operation. He hauled the logs to his mill site which was located about one-half mile up the river from the Cavanugh Bridge which at one time was the old Cavanugh ferry on the Washington County side of the river. He hauled lumber down the river to a little country town of Sparksville located on White River and the B & O Railroad o the Jackson County side of the river. Mr. Sutton could haul a carload of lumber at a time to his boat landing and there his men with a team and wagon hauled the lumber to the railroad car. That way Mr. Sutton could move a carload of lumber in one day’s time.

His excursion trips and joy riding and picicing all were done in the summer time up and down the river. But the big time was on the Fourth of July for on the Jackson County side of river where he had his boat landing made was a nice picnic area and people with their wagons and buggys would come for miles to celebrate and ride on the steam boat. Mr. Sutton would put up a stand for his daughter to sell ice cream and soda pop. People would bringtheir picnic lunch and celebrate until latein the evening before going home. That sure was a joyful time for everyone and one for oldtimers to remember.

Mrs. Rose E. Mount Dead

Mrs. Rose E. Mount, age 54, wife of George M. Mount, 500 East Third Street, Seymour, died at Schneck Memorial hospital about 12:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon of last week.

Mrs. Mount was taken there several days ago for a major operation but complications had gained too much headway in her system to save her life.

Mrs. Mount was born in Scott county, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eijah Miskel. On November 16, 1893, she was united in marriage to Mr. Mount and for the past six years the couple made their home in Seymour.

Besides the husband, one son, William Mount, of Alabama; two grandsons, George Mount, age 10, living at Indianapolis, and John William Mount, living with his granparents in Seymour; one sister, Mrs. Laura Miller, of Washington county, and one brother, Oliver Miskel, of Scott county, survive.

Mrs. Mount was a member of th Bethel Baptistchurch, Leota, and was known to many peoplehere who had known her sincegirlhood. She was ill forone month preceding her death.

The funeral was held at the home in Seymour with burial at the Crothersville cemetery, Friday.
