15.  1698, Apr. 13. George Mount conveyed to his son, Richard Mount , one hundred and eighty-five acres of land, in Middletown township , which, in 1710, formed part of the two hundred acres of land which Richard Mount sold to Eden Burrowes , and inasmuch as Richard Mount is not mentioned in his father's will, this land probably represented his interest in his father's estate and the gift cut him off as heir-at-law.

16. "The village of Middletown is in a fertile country, near the heart of the township....The Baptist church is worthy of note, from its having been the first of this deomination established in the State.

The annexed sketch of its origin is from Benedict's History of the Baptists: "For the origin of this church, we must look back to the year 1667, for that was the year when Middletown was purchased from the Indians by 12 men and 24 associates. Their names are in the town book.  Of them, the following were Baptists:  "Richard Stout, John Wilson, William Layton, John Stout, Walter Hall, William Compton, James Grover, John Cox, James Ashton, Jonathan Bown, Jonathan Holmes, John Bown, Obadiah Holmes, George Mount, Thomas Whitlock, John Beeckman, William Cheeseman, James Grover, Jr.

"It is probable that some of the above had wives and children of their own way of thinking; however, the forenamed 18 men appear to have been the constituents of the church of Middletown, and the winter of 1668 the time." (N. Jersey Hist. Collections: Barber & Howe, p. 354)

1668- "The Baptist Church at Middletown-The First Baptist Church in New

Jersey,Its Members.Pastors,Trials and Triumphs-The following sketch of the

noted church is from"Morgan Edwards Materials & c. of the State" published in

1792, with additions by Rev. David Benedict of Rhode Island, and published in

his "History of the Baptists" sixty years ago,(1813).

"This is the oldest Baptist Church in the State; it is thus distinguished for

the village where the meeting house stands in a townships of the same name

and county of Monmouth, about seventy nine miles E.N.E. from Philadelphia.

The meeting house is forty-two feet by thirty-two erected on the lot where

the old place of worship stood." For the origin of this church we must look

back to the year 1667, for that was the year when Middletown was purchased

from the Indians by 12 men and 24 associates. Their names are in the town

Spouse:                   Katherine, F

1.  Family tradition has always claimed that Katherine, wife of George, was a Borden.  However Borden researchers in the US find no evidence that one of their kinswomen ever married into the Mount line.  Katherine is NOT a name common to any of their lines although there have been a few going back to the 16th and 17th century.  I think that because George Mount and Benjamin Borden were coupled in several land transactions and their lands were close to each other, researchers assumed that there was a closer tie between the families than friendship.  Eventually one of the Mounts marries into the Potts line which is intermarried with the Bordens but that is as close as I have come to a link.(1999)

2.  Several folks claim she, in fact, is a Katherine Borden from Playden.
