Hartmann who sang "I love you Truly." Following the marriage cermony friends of the bride and

church parlor.
2.

Mrs. marshall was born in South Chicago
Heights, Ill., Oct. 4, 1921, daughter of the late Arnold and Catherine Klemme

Stratford 10 years ago. She was an

9.
Oronoque Villager - May 1984
Losi Johnson Marshall 1921-1984
The first we heard of Lois was when a
neighbor said, ÒThereÕs a talented woman who just moved to Cheyenne Lane. SheÕd like to work on the Villager.Ó
Naturally we wasted no time reaching her by phone. ÒSure,Ó she said, ÒIÕll help. What do you want me to do?Ó
It turned out that Lois could do almost
anything on a newspaper. She had
been media director and copywriter for several department stores and
advertising agencies in New Jersey and Chicago. Recently widowed, then, back in 1975, she moved east from
California to be near her two daughters.
But her choice for a job on the Village
was layout - a spot where we desperately needed help. And for nine years she was layout and production chief for
our village paper. One weekend
each month her home was the focus of activiity as other staff members came and
went, working under her direction to pull the issue together.
Warm friendships were formed in the doing,
because Lois had a knack of making work seem like fun. Her quick perception of what was right,
her boundless creative ideas showed up in every Villager, and her gay
personality inspired the rest of us.
For her, this was a labor of love.
She gave unstintingly of her precious time, for Lois had remarried and
also had a demanding job as assistant to the advertising and news director for
the Brooks Newspaper Syndicate in Westport. But she always found time for the Villager.
This giving of herself in all areas of her
life was perhaps her greatest talent.
Ask her neighbors. Ask her
many friends. Ask Tom, her husband
who so generously shared her with us.
We all felt her energy, her sensitivity to the needs of others, her
caring.
The last time I saw Lois, her concern was
typically not for herselt, ÒHow is everything going on the paper?Ó she wanted
to know.
ÒItÕs not the same without you,Ó I told
her, holding her hand.
And it never will be.

Family story: #1 Homer ran
away from home when he was between 10 and 12 years old after disagreement with
his parents over religion . He supposedly traveled out west to
Washington State. #2 He was one of the youngest of 10-12 children and his family was
well-to-do.
His father supposedly became a large
landowner in the Chicago area including owning the land where either Flossmoor
Country Club or a race track was built.
When he died the children
supposedly fought each
other over the inheritance and by the time all the suits were over the
only ones with anything were the lawyers.
2005 - We have absolutely no idea where
this story originated but both Sandie and I remember hearing it. I wonder if this could have actually
been GrandmaÕs family as BusseÕs were wealthy landowners in the Chicago
area. Although I believe her
grandfather Fred Busse was born in Germany, he was in Addison, DuPage Co., IL
which was a prominent Busse area.
6.
Homer applied (or at least Carrie applied as the envelope was in her
handwriting) for a delayed special registration of birth in October of 1942
under a law passed in 1941 that allowed this. In his application he lists his occupation as steam fitter and
his residence as R. R. #2, Chicago Heights, IL. There is an affidavit signed by
John Elsworth Johnson attached that says he is the father. There is also an affidavit of one
Elizabeth M. Honsaker who says he has known Homer for 53 years and that she is
a non-relative to the applicant. The record is filed as #1982 of 1942 and dated
October 14, 1942.
In 1917 when Homer Newton was 27, he
married Caroline Alvine Christine Busse, Grandmother, F.
They had the following children:
2 i. Robert
Frederick, M (1919-1973)
ii. Charles

In 1900 they appear as a family (including Alvina age 15) in Foxhome,
Wilkin Co., MN. I believe I found
Sophia and son William (Willie) living in Otter Tail County in 1910. Sophie is listed as a housekeeper and son is listed as Willie. They are not enumerated with any other
family members and there is NO sign of William. So if William was alive on 4 Feb 1910 when his mother died
he either died or disappeared between that date and when the census was taken.

salesman, and in 1879 returned to
Crete, where he remained in the grocery
business until he came to Chicago
Heights.
Mr. Hartman was a staunch Republican, and
during his time held several

CRETE REMEMBERED
The Hartmann Building
Article 57- by Phyllis Monks & Carol
Triebold
Reflecting An Entrepreneurial Spirit
A building reveals much about the history of a community and
the individuals who work or live in it.
The entrepreneurial spirit of CreteÕs H. J. Hartmann (also
known as Henry J. or Johann Heinrich) has passed to each owner and tenant of
his building at 1390 Main Street.
Landing in Crete in the spring of 1879 with his team and
wagon, Hartmann bought butter, eggs and poultry from local farmers. . Loaded with these goods, he made the
long journey on the dirt wagon road to Chicago. He sold these goods in Chicago and purchased dry goods and
general merchandise to resell or to trade, for more produce from the farmers.
Within a year Hartmann rented his first store in an old
blacksmith shop on Main Street opposite CreteÕs sash and door factory south of
Division Street. HartmannÕs hard
work increased his business so fast that in 1881 he erected a building on the
east side of Main Street south of Cass Street. Here he sold his dry goods on the first floor and used the
loft to pack butter, eggs and poultry for sale in Chicago. He also started a meat market, carrying
a full line of fresh and salt meats and sausages.
His wagon loads to Chicago increased, weighing as high as
2000 pounds as he added more products, such as roasted pigs. A newspaper article of December 28,
1893 stated, ÒThe killing and dressing of roasting pigs was a great industry in
those days and Mr. Hartmann handled 700 ÔporkiesÕ in one winter.Ó He had a large covered wagon made for
his business that required four horses to pull it to Chicago.
Needing even more space by 1887, Hartmann bought a lot at the
southwest corner of Main and Cass Streets and built a handsome two-story and
basement brick structure.
The date on HartmannÕs building can be seen today on the northern
portion of Old Town Mall.
In 1893 Hartmann built a three story frame warehouse and
sausage factory for his growing business ventures.
He also started an ice cream business in the basement of the
building, which became a main attraction on hot summer days. HartmannÕs ad in the August 19, 1898
edition of The Crete Citizen read:
ÒWatermelons going like hot cakes because they are cheap, Crockery being
sold at wholesale, Groceries-rock bottom prices.Ó
The Hartmann property was sold in 1908 to H. C. Wehmhoeffer
for $18,000. In the same year
Hartmann turned over the store operations to his son-in-law, Henry (Heinrich)
F. Ruhe.
The store business was sold to Henry Diersen and William H.
Rinne in April 1914. Six months
later William C. Hartmann (brother to H. J. Hartmann), Diersen and Rinne
incorporated Crete Supply Company to operate the Wm. C. Hartmann & Son,
which advertised in December 1926 in The Crete Record, ÒYou will find Old St.
Nick in all his glory at The Crete StoreÉIn our Dry Goods Department you will
find lots of pretty and useful Christmas gifts, among which are menÕs silk
shirts, handkerchiefs, stationery, perfumes, menÕs, womenÕs and childrenÕs silk
and wool hose.Ó
WilliamÕs son, Fred Hartmann continued the business in the
older north two-story building till he sold the business to Ralph Einhorn in
1946. Mr. Einhorn bought the
building and operated EinhornÕs Grocery store in the north portion until he was
appointed Crete Postmaster in 1966.
5.
H. J. hartmann became the Postmaster of Crete on June 23, 1897 and
naturally placed the Post Office in his store. hartmannÕs daughter, Rosa leonora hartmann, became CreteÕs
first lady Postmaster at the young age of 21. She served as Postmaster from March 20, 1901 to September
15, 1903. She married henry Ruhe
on November 1, 1903 and he carried on her fatherÕs business from 1908 to 1914.

She is buried next to Josiah but there is a problem with her tombstone
which lists her birth as 1864. My
best guess is that J. Ellsworth, with whom she lived, gave the dates to the
person who carved the stone and he gave his wifeÕs birthdate instead of his
motherÕs. Hattie, was in fact,
born in April of 1864 which would correspond with the date on the stone. Maria/Mariah Deffenbaugh Johnson was
born 25 Apr 1834.
10.
In the 1860 Census, John and Maria and sons, Josiah and Ira, reside next
door to a Josiah Bowman and wife Maria.
Is there a family relationship between Maria, who was the daughter of
Susannah Bowman, and Josiah Bowman who lived next door in 1860.

6. Past and present of Will county, pg. 832
William C. Hartman, the owner of a good
farm of one hundred and eighty acres on section 25, Crete township, is numbered
among the native sons of Will county, his birth occurring in this township on
the 13th of April, 1857. He is of
German lineage, both his parents, John and Ellen Sophia (Behrens) Hartman,
having been natives of Germany. In
the year, 1850 the father came to the United States and setled in Cook county,
Illinois, where he remained for a short time prior to coming to Crete township,
Will county, Illinois. He bought
land on section 25 and began the development of the farm, which he continued to
make his home until his death. He
was industrious and frugal and in his undertakings met with a measure of
success such as always rewards the labors of one who is persistent and
energetic and whose efforts are guided by sound judgment. He was an active member of the Crete
Lutheran church and one of the organizers of St. JohnÕs church in Crete
township. In the community he was
known as a good neighbor and in his family circle was a devoted husband and
father, doing everything in his power to promote the welfare and happiness of his
wife and children. His early
political allegiance was given the whig party and upon its dissolutions he
joined the ranks of the new republican party in 1856 and remained one of its
faithful supporters until his death, which occurred in 1871 in his sixtieth
year. His wife passed away in 1900
in her sixty-sixth year. (PJM
note: Dates do not agree with those given by family members.) She came from
Germany with her brothers, Conrad and Otto Behrens, who settled in Crete
township, and her sister, Sophie Behrens, who afterward became the wife of
Henry Wiebruk, who settled in Monee township. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Hartman were born the following
cildren: Henry, who is now a
merchant in Chicago Heights; John, a farmer in Iroquois county; Wiliam C;
August, a farmer in Crete township; Marian, the wife of Henry W. Ohlendorf, who
follows farming in Crete township; and Sophia, the wife of T. C. Tatge, of
Crete Township.
On 8 May 1852 when Johann ÒJohnÓ Carl was
27, he married Engel Marie Dorothea Behrens, GG Grandmother, F, in Trinity
