This is a good old German family planted in Fayette county by Conrad Deffenbaugh, a native of Germany . After his emigration he settled in Eastern Pennsylvania , later coming to Fayette county , where he married Margaret Riffle . They settled on new land and endured all the dangers and privations of the pioneer. They had a family of seven children.

4.  THE CONRAD DEFFENBAUGH FAMILY

by  Chauncey Lloyd Deffenbaugh [23 Nov 1905-27 Sept 1993] Quoted by Ralph Emerson Deffenbaugh

"The Conrad Deffenbaugh (Tevebaugh, Tiefenbach, Diefenbach) (1749-Jan 1812) Family, German township, Fayette Co, Pa. Spouse, Mary Magdalene Riffle (1755-22 Oct 1832). Nine children-six boys and three girls were born to them. Conrad Deffenbaugh, a native of Germany, along with his brother, Wilhelm (William) came to America sometime in the 1760's. Since there is no record of their landing at the port of Philadelphia, certain circumstances prevailing at that time lead me to believe that they must have disembarked at Baltimore or one of the other Maryland ports. Records show that other Deffenbaughs were living in Baltimore at the time who might have been kinfolk. There is a record of a Conrad Deffenbaugh taking communion at the Lutheran church in Frederick, MD in 1767. We know they were Lutherans but have no proof of their place of origin in Germany. (Baden has been mentioned.)

William Deffenbaugh, the brother, was reported to have settled somewhere in western Maryland at that time. All attempts to locate information about him or any of his descendants have been unsuccessful to this time. (1975)

Since Conrad came to German township, where a number of German immigrants had previously settled, it seems reasonable for us to assume that he followed the old National Trail to reach his destination. He eventually settled on a farm about 2? miles east, northeast of Fort Mason (Masontown), formerly named Germantown. The time of his arrival in this locality has never been established, or when he met and married Mary Magdalene Riffle. We do know that their first child, Conrad, Jr., was born in 1773. (Fischer's Jacob's Lutheran Baptismal records show John, born 1793, as the first of Conrad's children to be baptised in German twp.)

All of Conrad's family stayed with the Lutheran Church except his second son, Jacob, who went with the Reformed group. He donated a portion of one of his farms for a church building and cemetery, which today is the McClellandtown United Presbyterian Church and Church Hill Cemetery. He, his wife and several of his children are buried there. Conrad, his wife, and many of his descendants are buried in the Jacob's Lutheran Church cemetery.

In 1785, Conrad applied to the state of Pennsylvania (possibly Virginia) for a land grant. He received it in 1787 for the price of 5 pounds English which was equal to $29.60. It consisted of 145+ acres and the deed stipulated that the grant was legal provided that it did not encroach on Indian treaty lands. It was known as "Conrad's Fancy."  The farm, or plantation, passed from Conrad to his wife, Mary Magdalene, in 1812. Her son, Anthony, bought out his brothers' and sisters' interests between the years 1817 and 1830. When Anthony died in 1843, the farm reverted to his wife, Susanna. Her son, George, took it over at her death in 1884 and farmed it until May 26, 1913, when he sold it to his brother, Christian Deffenbaugh for $1.00 with the provision that he (George) be given a home and be cared for as long as he lived. His end came on March 8, 1916. Christian farmed it until his death on December 18, 1922. To settle the estate, it was sold out of the family in 1923 to a coal mining company. The land was strip mined and all the buildings were destroyed. The house and barn had been located approximately 200 yards east of the township road now known as T-370, which connects the Masontown-Leckrone road (PA 3013) to the Masontown-Woodside road (PA 3010) at the Mennonite Church. A high voltage power line passes over the building site.

  The Conrad Deffenbaugh family consisted of nine children, listed in order of their birth. A) Conrad, Jr (1773-1805); B) Jacob (1776-Dec 10, 1854); C) Catherine (1780-1866); D) Solomon (1785-1869); E) Daniel (1786-March 13, 1867); F) Anthony, (Feb 16, 1789-Oct 2, 1843); G) Barbara (July 1, 1792-March 15, 1827); H) (John) George (Dec 24, 1793-Dec 8, 1872); I) Magdalene (Jan 14, 1796-?) (possibly died in Texas)."

4.  R. L. Riffle - March 21, 1999 at 15:02:09

I have a Jacob in my line that would have been born around 1720. He patented land in Fayette Co., PA. just above the Mason Dixon Line. This part of Fayette Co., was claimed by three states: Pa, Manoghalia, VA and West Agusta, Maryland. He had an early Fort where early courts were held. This fort is mentioned in various histories. However the court records burned in the 1790s fire at the courthouse in Monongalia Co.,((now West Virginia)).

Jacob doesn't appear to be buried at St.Jacob's Lutheran Church which has the early burials. His Son George was born 13 May 1754 and married Elizabeth Waltzer/Walser. Jacob also appears to have had children named: Nicholas b. 1752, Mary Magdalene, Matthias, and a daughter said to be the d/o of Andrew M. & Abigail Riffle, however, This child, Elizabeth Riffle/Rifel was most likely Jacob's daughter. She died the winter of 1765-66.

Several of my ancestors children, children of George Rifel, Sr. moved to WVA to claim lands George was awarded for service in the Revolutionary War. Many early letters have survived which state this. Also, some members went west and are also recorded in these letters.

Jacob Sr. seems to have moved out of Pa. There are many deeds and several state that he sold his land to his son Nicholas who is buried at the Lutheran Church. Elizabeth, George, Mary Magdalene and Nicholas are buried at St. Jacob's Lutheran Church.

They had the following children:

          2            i.          Conrad, 19732, M (1773-1805)

1.  ÒBig JakeÓ

2.  Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Genealogical and Personal History

Jacob , son of Conrad and Margaret (Riffle) Deffenbaugh , was born in Fayette county in 1776 . He learned the blacksmith's trade and was one of the most expert iron workers in the county. He made axles, chains, and other needed articles, shipping to river points. He prospered and owned three farms of one hundred acres each. He was a Whig in politics, and a Presbyterian in religion. He died 1854 . He married Eva Everly , who bore him eleven children.

3.  Chauncey Lloyd Deffenbaugh [23 Nov 1905-27 Sept 1993] via Debbie Harris

"Jacob must have been a big man for he was often referred to as "Big Jake." During church services, he was always one of the most trusted scouts to warn of danger when the Indians were on the prowl. He was a skilled blacksmith and craftsman in making iron products such as axles, chains, farm tools, wheel rims, etc. His products were of the highest quality and much of them were shipped down the Monongahela River for sale in the Pittsburgh area. His skill and excellent workmanship led to much financial success as was proven by his ownership of three separate farms at the same time. It was from his farm near McClellandtown that the area for the Presbyterian Church and cemetery was obtained. He was the last active member of the Reformed group's Council at the time it separated from the Lutherans. He was the one who signed the papers that relinquished the Reformed group's claim to the land donated by the Franks family for a "meeting house" and school. Jacob was appointed to a Fayette County committee of four to work with representatives from all the other counties of the state to speak out to the people of Pennsylvania extolling the virtues of the American way of carrying on business without the interference of England. [Taken from the Uniontown paper of May 5, 1827]  The record reveals that he was a capable leader and a concerned citizen. The parents of Jacob's wife, Nicholas and Dorothy Everly, lived on an adjoining farm east of "Conrad's Fancy."  The other Everly children were:  Elizabeth, married to Nicholas Poundstone; Catherine, married to Michael Baker; Margaret, married to Joseph Yeager; Barbara, married to Joseph Bowers; Christine, married to Phillip Mason; Mary, married to Nicholas Mason; and a son Jacob."

In ~1800 when Jacob was 24, he married Eva Everly, 19923, F, daughter of Johann Nicolas Everly, 20560, M (12 Apr 1744-6 Dec 1825) & Marie Thorothera Mohr, 20561, F (1755-10 Apr 1826), in Fayette Co., PA. Born on 7 Jun 1780 in German Twp., Fayette Co., PA. Eva died on 20 Mar 1870; she was 89. Buried in McClelland Presbyterian Church, German Twp., Fayette Co., PA.

"Anthony bought his sisters' and brothers' shares in the plantation, "Conrad's Fancy," during the period between 1817 and 1830 for the sum of $150 each, except John George, who received $400 because his father did not live long enough to teach him a trade as he had done for the other boys. He stayed on at the plantation until 1817 when he and his wife moved to Perry County, Ohio, where he purchased a farm east of Glenford. The farm was sold out of the family in the early 1920's and was about 400 acres in size. "Since the Elder Conrad died in 1812 his wife outlived him until 1832--about 20 years--it was the responsibility of Anthony to care for his mother as long as she lived. Releases for their interest in the plantation were signed by each  of Anthony's brothers and sisters. There is no record showing that the children of Conrad, Jr. or the children of Barbara Rider received any share from Anthony."

8.  Will of Maria Johnson

Be it remembered that I, Maria Johnson of Nicholson Township, Fayette County, Penna., do make this my last will and testament in manner following.  That is to say - I order and direct that all my just debts shall be paid with convenient speed.  I give unto John Ellsworth Johnson, my son all that piece of land containing between five and six acres which I bought of Nicholas Riffle and which adjoins of my son John Ellsworth Johnsons.  This gift to my son John Ellsworth Johnson is in consideration for services rendered by him for me he to have and hold the same forever.  Second I give and bequeath to my son Josiah Newton Johnson and my son John E. Johnson and Ira Fremont JohnsonsÕ two children viz:--Frank Johnson and Helen Johnson to have the balance of my estate divided as follows:  Josiah Newton one-third and John Ellsworth Johnson one-third and Frank Johnson one sixth and Helen Johnson sone-sixth- I have endeavored to divide my estate as just equitable between my heirs as I think just to me they are all alike.  I appoint Isah Cover the executor of this my last will and testament.  In witness whereof I the above named testator have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of June in the year of our Lord nineteen Hundred and thirteen.

Same day letters test. to Isah Cover.

RECORDED AND COMPARED NOVEMBER 12, 1914---CHAS. O. SCHOYER---REGISTER.

9.  She is buried next to Josiah but there is a problem with her tombstone which lists her birth as 1864.  My best guess is that J. Ellsworth, with whom she lived, gave the dates to the person who carved the stone and he gave his wifeÕs birthdate instead of his motherÕs.  Hattie, was in fact, born in April of 1864 which would correspond with the date on the stone.  Maria/Mariah Deffenbaugh Johnson was born 25 Apr 1834.

On 5 Oct 1856 when Maria was 22, she married John Keney Johnson, GG Grandfather, 19723, M, son of David Johnson, 19756, M (5 Mar 1785-24 May 1860) & Mary Magdelena Bixler, 19757, F (~1789-~1857), in Masontown, Fayette Co., PA. Born on 19 Jun 1830 in Fayette Co., PA. John Keney died in Masontown, Fayette Co., PA, on 5 Apr 1863; he was 32. Buried in Newcomer Farm, Fayette Co., PA.

1.  William Henry , fifth child of Jacob (2) and Sarah (Hertzog) Deffenbaugh , was born August 19, 1843 , in Nicholson township , on the old homestead. He was educated in the public schools of Nicholson township , later attending Dunlap's Creek Academy, at which institution his brother prepared for the ministry. Leaving school he worked on his father's farm for a time, finally superintending the entire farm. In 1885 he sold his farm and Greeley-like "went west," returning two years later and establishing in the mercantile business at New Geneva .

In 1894 Mr. Deffenbaugh built a handsome residence in the town, but in 1901 heard the call of country life and purchased a farm of one hundred acres in Westmoreland county , remaining there until 1909 . He then moved to Geneva , where he lives a quiet life, retired from active business affairs. When a lad he belonged to Captain W. S.
