1. Christian Bixler, 6G Grandfather, 19964, M. Born on 5 Oct 1706 in Sumiswald, Switzerland. Christian died in Manchester, York Co., PA, in Mar 1777; he was 70.

1.  Information from wbixler289@aol.com on Rootsweb.com.  WorldConnect File dated 2001

2.  Listed as passenger on the ship Adventure, Jonathan Davies, Master, from Rotterdam, last from Plymouth, England. The immigrants from the Palatine were registered in England before coming on to the Colonies.

3.  Probably the first of the Bixlers to come to America were Christian and his elder brother John, although they did not arrive together. They settled near York and Hanover, Pennsylvania in 1727. A third brother is said to have moved later to Virginia. The earliest deed record that we have was dated 1740,and states that land in Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania was sold to Christian and John Bixler jointly, and also states that Christian could not sell the land until after the demise of John, the elder brother. We have no record of the death of John Bixler, but apparently he died before Christian, as no mention is made of him in Christian's Will. There is also no mention of Christian's wife in the Will, so we must presume that she predeceased him. Christian Bixler owned over1000 acres of land in Manchester Township,York County, Pennsylvania, and also operated a mill, which he left to his son Joseph, along with the home place.

    The Will of Christian Bixler

In the name of God Amen, I Christian Bixler of Manchester township,York County, and Province of Pennsylvania, Yeoman, being very sick and weak in body, but of present mind and memory, thanks be given unto God, calling to mind the mortality of my body, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following -

I recommend my soul unto the hand of Almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors, and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it both pleased God to bless me in this life I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

Further I give to my son Joseph the house I now live in with the mill and barn with the land, will be mentioned hereafter. First the land joining the line of young Christian Bixler to the creek and meadow joining the creek until three rods this side the trees on the other end of the barn and so following that row apple trees about two rods from the barn with a straight line of Casper Knobs except the meadow joining young Christian Bixler.

I say I give this to my son Joseph for one thousand five hundred pounds thereof he is to pay in two years after my death one hundred pounds yearly, until he has paid what comes to him. Further, I give to my two youngest sons Jacob and Michael all the rest of my land with meadows joining Christian Bixler at the twelve acres each of the two six and an open way and the water that comes from Knobs for to water this twelve acres. I say I recommend this to them, their heirs and assigns forever. Further I recommend that my daughter Barbara shall have the entire of her share yearly what comes to her of my estate as long as she lives without Valentine Joackey and after the said Barbara's death the whole shall come to her heirs and assigns forever,if they live well and honestly.  If not it shall come to my heirs and assigns forever.

Further I recommend that my son-in-law Valentine Joackey is to have one shilling sterling and no more. I likewise constitute, make and ordain the sole executors of this my last will and testament and do hereby disallow and revoke all former testaments, wills, legacies and executors, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this third day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven.

7.  Rick Huneke - 6 Nov 2001 12:55 AM - researching John Bixler

According to the book, "John Bixler, Pioneer, Immigrant, Farmer, 2nd edition", by Agnes Bixler Kurtz, (2000), Richard Warren Davis of Provo, Utah has spent extensive time in the records office in Bern, Switzerland, and other places researching as many Mennonite families as possible. According to the author, he found the following information:

"In the Ulrich Bixler family, a Hans, born in 1700, a Christian, born in 1706, and a Peter, born in 1709, all disappear from the records of Eggiwil in 1725. A John and a Christian arrived in Pennsylvania in 1725, and Peter arrived in 1727. This is possibly the same family, as the names and dates fit. One interesting point, if this is indeed the family, is that until now, the family of Peter in America was treated as not related to the families of John and Christian. Now we see that they were probably brothers."

8.  Kurtz reports that in 1737 Christian bought a tract of one hundred acres of land from Andrew MacGill and his name is mentioned as a grantee in a deed dated 1740 (1737 Deed 2-B-469 York) for one hundred acres of land called 'Great Meadows' lying on the south side of Codorus Creek (Manchester Township, York County). [Op. Cit., p. 67] "He continued to add to these purchases and before he died, a 1767 survey verified that he owned 776 contiguous acres. His property was divided upon his death and distributed to his sons. His son Christian (d.1795) stayed on his land and passed it on to his son Michael, who is buried on the land. It was then passed on to Matthias, who had more debts than he could pay when he died in 1873, so the farm was put up for auction. Fortunately, Matthias' daughter, Mary, and her husband, John Rudy, were able to buy it and keep it in the family. John Rudy was a business man, not a farmer, but their son, George, farmed the land. After George's death in 1935, his three children had no interest in farming and eventually donated this property to the city of York, PA." [Ibid., p.7]

Clarence Ramer prepared a typewritten document on the history of the John N. Durrs. Judging from the latest dates of descendants,it must have been prepared around 1924.Note: The brothers and sisters of David Johnson. The father of Anna Johnson Durr are as follows; Peter, Nicolas, Jacob and Nancy.  Nancy was married to a Bixler. She was Bishop Joseph Bixler's mother who lives in Ohio. She had one daughter who married a Buckwalter.

"Just next to these two graves [Bishop Nicholas and Magalene Johnson's] are two marked with common field stones. The one is marked "P.J. 81" and the other is "A.J. 87". I imagine that these

are likely Nicholas' father and mother, but as to what the A would stand for I have been unable to learn." [The numbers in the letter are very smudgy, so there is a bit of guesswork. They must be ages instead of dates. KZ]

Sketch of the Life of Bro. Nicholas Johnson

NICHOLAS JOHNSON, died at the residence of his son, Joseph B. Johnson, in Nicholson township, Fayette county, Pa., on the 5th of April, 1873, after an illness of several weeks, in the 86th year of his age.

Among the many distinguished persons, whose recent deaths have demanded public notice, none perhaps will be more missed and lamented within the sphere of his labors and acquaintanceship than the venerable subject of this Memoir. His advanced age, his christian virtues and his remarkable affability gained for him at once the love, and commanded the respect and esteem of all who knew him.

He was peculiarly identified with the community in which he lived; he had grown up in that community to manhood, and there he had lived, and in a measure worn out a long and useful life. For nearly seventy years, in the various relations of life, he had occupied the same place as a residence or home. In 1804, when he was seventeen years of age, his parents emigrated from Rockingham county, Virginia, to Fayette county, Pa., where shortly after their arrival, they purchased the tract of land on which they lived many years, and which, by an arrangement in the family, came into the posession of their son, Nicholas.

Here he resided until his family grew up, married and settled around in the neighborhood, when being admonished by advancing years, he made arrangements by which his son, Joseph B. Johnson became the owner of the greater portion of the old homestead of his father. Here it was that the venerable and beloved father calmly breathed his last, and here in the family burying-ground his mortal remains reposed in the slumbers of the grave.

At an early period when his parents came to this section of the country, emigration was attended with much greater difficulties and hardships than since the introduction of steamboats and railroads. Then the old fashioned tented wagon, the pack-horse and the pack-saddle, were the only means of travel and transportation for the few necessaries of life which the emigrant carried with him to his new home. At that time none of the present facilities of emigration were enjoyed. The old BraddockRoad across the Alleghany Mountains, was then the only route for the emigrant to this section of the country; and over this rough and tortuous road, winding its way among the hills and rocks of the mountains, this family met and encountered the hardships and privations of emigration, in the hope of bettering their condition in a new home, on the west side of the Alleghanies. The want of a due respect for labor at that time in eastern Va., owing to the existence of the institution of human slavery there, induced and influenced many who had to depend upon their own labor for a living to leave that state, and seek a home, in states where the blighting effects of that institution were not known. Under these circumstances, our late bishop, in his boy-hood, commenced life.

From early parental instruction, and the examplary life of both his parents, who lived to a great age, he became impressed while young, with the importance of religion, and of yielding obedience to its demands. Acting under these convictions, he united himself, with the Mennonite Church; while yet a young man, and during the whole of his long and eventful life, he was faithful and remarkably punctual in the discharge of his christian duties. A remark that he made to his son, Joseph, on the first Sabbath, of his last sickness, shows with what wonderful punctuality he had attended, in the public worship of God, through the whole course of his long life. He remarked on that occasion, "that, that was the first Sabbath, when there was meeting in the neighborhood or church, when he was about home, on which he had failed to attend the public worship of God for sixty years." This also shows, with what remarkable health he was blessed throughout the whole course of his life. The last public occasion at which he was present, was the funeral of his son-in-law, Solomon Honsaker of the Masontown Mennonite Church. In a word of exortation, at that time he said to the concourse of people that he felt a presentiment of that being the last time that he would ever enjoy a public opportunity of calling on them to seek the Lord, or of pointing them to the Lamb of God. This proved to be prophetic; for, in the course of a few days the slight indisposition under which he was laboring at that time, developed a formidable derangement of the stomach which baffled medical skill, and prostrated him in a way, that considering his great age, almost precluded any reasonable hope of his recovery from the commencement of the attack. His patience, and christian fortitude in his final sickness, evinced his faith in the religion that he had professed through life; and his implicit confidence in the promises of God. He frequently assured his friends and brethren during his illness that he enjoyed the comforts of God's grace and Spirit; and that he was fully resigned to the will of his heavenly father in his affliction; believing from the first, that it would finally end in the struggle with his last enemy, death. Of him it may be said with peculiar emphasis, that he died in the triumph of faith; and that his life was a commentary on the Scriptures of divine truth, which he so highly appreciated, and labored so long an faithfully to inculcate upon his fellow-men.

Possessing a vigorous constitution, and uninterrupted health, for a period of fully three score years, he was enabled to stand at his post, in all the various relations that he sustained to the church through life: First as member, next as deacon, then as a preacher, and finally as a bishop. In all these positions he was faithful in the discharge of whatever obligation they respectively imposed upon him. His affable disposition and social habits endeared him to a large circle of friends and relatives; he seemed to be connected by a kind of social affinity with every situation of life, from youth to old age. He spent much of his time for several years previous to his death, in visiting among his children, relatives and friends, and was always greeted with a cordial welcome upon his arrival; and invited upon his departure, with a warm solicitation, "to come again." At a late period of life he frequently made long journeys, in attending the Conferences of the church, and other large meetings. The last journey of any considerable distance, that he made, was to a Conference in Elkhart county, Ind., in October 1872, in the 85th year of his age. This was a journey of nearly five hundred miles, and was accomplished by him without the usual fatigue consequent on advanced age. Upon his return to his home and friends, in his usual good health and spirit, he manifested no indications of weariness from the travel.

For many years, the church in this vicinity, amongst his family and relatives, was mainly supported and upheld by his labors. The first house for public worship, that was build by the church, was erected upon his land. Here, in this church, in the year 1842 he took an active and leading part among the members of the church, in organizing and conducting a Sabbath School. This, it is believed, was the first SABBATH SCHOOL established in the Mennonite Church within the United States.

He was about forty years of age when he was promoted from deacon to preacher, and notwithstanding the great drain upon the membership of the church by emigration to the west, and elsewhere, he lived to see the church grow from a few scattered members, whoc worshiped, principally, for many years, in a small school-house, to a church of near one hundred members, with a large, commodious, and substantial brick-house recently erected at a more central location. The numerous accessions to the church within the last year or two, seemed to be the crowning joy of his life. But he had already long passed his three score years and ten, and was awaiting the call of his Master. Death to him had lost its sting and its terrors. Through its dark valley and shadows, he felt that he would be supported by the rod and staff of Israel's Shepherd, and should fear no evil. What a blessed end! How blest are the dear who die in the Lord! He selected as a text for a funeral sermon, at his burial, Luke 23:28. "But Jesus turning unto them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children." From the text Elder Joseph I. Cover of the Brethren Church, preached the funeral discourse to a large concourse of people, at the house of Joseph B. Johnson.

He was a lad of seven when the family settled in Bullskin township, Fayette county , and there he grew to manhood, a shrewd, capable hard-working man, with a great love of the soil and having a pure delight in its ownership. He prospered abundantly, becoming the wealthiest of all the brothers, although all were men of prosperity. He began adding to his homestead each farm that surrounded it until he owned fifteen hundred acres. He would say, in rather an apologetic way, that the reason he bought each adjoining farm, was that they "joined him so pretty." He also owned and operated a saw mill and a grist mill on his own farm, which made it quite a center of commercial activity. He was a devout Mennonite and a good man, honorable in all his dealings, but very careful of his own interests. He married Mary Bixler and left issue.

DAVID JOHNSON was born in Rockingham county, Virginia, March 5, 1786, and died near Masontown, May 24, 1860. He received an elementary education, came with his father, Peter Johnson, to Fayette county where he married Magdalena Bixler and reared a family of six sons and two daughters. Mr. Johnson was a weaver by trade, but devoted his time to farming in which he was most successful. He owned sixteen hundred acres of land and one of his sons acquired an estate of one thousand acres. Mr. Johnson and his wife were consistent members of the Mennonite church, and politically he was a Whig and a Republican.

4. Bios: Selected Bios A-J : History of Fayette County, by Franklin Ellis, 1882: Fayette Co, PA

The late DAVID JOHNSON of German township was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, March 5, 1786, and came with his father, Peter Johnson, and the family into Fayette County when David Johnson, who was the eldest son, was quite young.  They settled in German township  He was educated in the subscription schools of the times, worked on his father's farm and learned the art of weaving, and remained at home till the time of his marriage to Mary Magdalena Bixler of German township, June 27, 1809, whereafter he took up his residence with his father-in-law for one year, and then purchased a farm, still in the hands of relatives of his, near Uniontown whereon he resided for six years, and selling the farm to his brother, Jacob Johnson, bought the "Yauders farm" near Masontown upon which he lived the rest of his days.  He was the father of nine children, eight of whom were living at the time of his death, which occurred May 24, 1860.  All the eight children, six boys and two girls, were also married at the time of the father's

death.  Mrs Johnson died some three years before her husband and both were buried in the private burying ground on the Newcomer farm, adjoining Mr Johnson's original farm and which he owned at the time of his death and which his daughter Frances Johnson, Mrs John Young, now owns.

Mr Johnson and his wife were members of the Mennonite Church.  Mr Johnson was in early life a whig in politics, but became a Republican.  He was not an ardent politician and never sought office . It is said of him that "If David Johnson was not an honest man then there are no honest men..."

Mr Johnson owned about sixteen hundred acres of land, the most of which is underlaid with the nine feet vein of bituminous coal and left to each of his children a farm of about two hundred acres of land, with house and outbuildings thereon, upon which severally the surviving children are

still living in prosperous circumstances.

Mr Jacob Johnson, the son of David Johnson, and the next to the last born of his children, and who perhaps more especially than the rest supplies the place of his father in the world, left the old homestead farm whereon for a long number of years he had wrought, just prior to his father's death, and moved upon "the Middle Run farm" in the same township, to which he has made many additions by purchase until his present landed estate covers about a thousand excellent acres.

He married in 1852 Elizabeth Knotts, a native of Virginia.  They have had five sons and two daughters.  Four sons and two daughters are now living and residing with their father, and being industrious and faithful children are adding to the worth of the already valuable homestead farm.

Mr and Mrs Johnson are members of the Mennonite Church.

On Sunday November the 26th, 1871, at the residence of his son-in-law, Jonathan Gally, in German township, Fayette county, Pa., Bro. Jacob Johnson, at the advanced age of 81 years, 11 months and 3 days. His remains were followed, on the next day, by a large concourse of relatives and friends, to the family burying-ground, on the old homestead farm, and the funeral services were held, at the house of his son, Joseph, near the burying-ground, by Elder Joseph C. Cover and David Johnson. The subject selected by Elder Cover for the occasion, was the latter clause of the 45th verse of the 15th chapter of 1 Cor. After the sermon, David Johnson made some additional remarks appropriate to the occasion. Though Bro. Jacob Johnson had been affected for several years past, periodically, yet, between the attacks of the complaint, he enjoyed a tolerable degree of health for a man of his age, and spent much of his time in visiting amongst his children and relatives. On Tuesday previous to his decease, he returned from a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Sarah Reist, near Connellsville, and also his son Joseph's and on the next day accompanied by his son Joseph, he arrived at Jonathan Galley's, his son-in-law when towards the latter part of the week, his periodical malady with great violence returned and terminated his earthly career. As a citizen he was much esteemed. He had been a member of the church for many years, --was always punctual in the discharge of his obligations, enjoying the comforts of the religion which he professed, as well in the diversified relations of life as in the solemn and trying hour of death. By his death his children lose a kind and affectionate father and the community a highly esteemed citizen.

Johnson. - Pre. David Johnson died of general debility at the home of Bro. Justus Bare, Masontown, Pa., Nov. 24, 1908; aged 91 y. 7 m. 12 d. Bro. Johnson was born near the place of his death, April 12, 1817, and was the son of Bish. Nicholas Johnson, and at the time of his death was probably the oldest active minister of the Mennonite Church in America. Bro. Johnson was married to _________Riffle, who preceded him to the spirit world a number of years ago. They had no children, but took into their home Bro. Bare when a boy, who remained with them until both passed away. Bro. Johnson was not what might be called a fluent speaker, but was a faithful minister of the Gospel and much interested in the welfare of the church and the promulgation of her doctrines. He served the church at Masontown in the ministerial capacity for more than sixty years, and his place at the public services was never vacant when it was at all possible for him to be present. He missed but one regular service during his last illness. He was of an amiable disposition and during his long period of public services it could scarely be said that he ever made an enemy. Funeral services were held at the Masontown Church on Nov. 26, conducted by J. N. Durr, assisted by J. A. Brilhart and Aaron Loucks. Text, Rev. 14:13. interment in cemetery adjoining. Peace to his ashes.

Born on 4 Feb 1830 in Polk Township, Washington Co., IN. Joshua died in Bedford , Lawrence Co., IN, on 10 Oct 1914; he was 84. Buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Bedford, Lawrence Co., IN.

1.  A prominent citizen and native of Polk Township, was born February 4, 1830, being the youngest in a family of twelve children born to Joshua and Martha (Skean) Crow, who were natives of North Carolina, and came to this State in the year 1821, and settled on the farm now owned and occupied by our subject.  Mr. Crow, Sr., died December, 1848, and Mrs. Crow

April, 1868.  Joshua, Jr., has always lived at the old homestead.  He received a limited education in the primitive log schoolhouse of his day. November 15, 1858, his marriage with Emma Bixler was solemnized.  His occupation has always been farming, and he has been quite successful in that

pursuit.  He now owns 130 acres, mostly improved land.  He belongs to the Masonic fraternity at Providence.  Mr. and Mrs. Crow are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  In politics he is a Democrat and he takes a good live interest in the political affairs of the community in which he

lives.  He has served the people as Township Assessor for twenty-two years.

2.  According to Hartley, Joshua was called "Uncle Doc".  He and Emma had no children of their own so they adopted a couple of boys, one of whom was Eugene Calloway Crowe.  Gene  married and had one son, Barney, b. 30 Jul 1901.  Gene was superintendent of a rock quarry but went into politics and served as a Congressman for two terms from the 9th Congressional District.

3.  Member of the Masonic Fraternity at Providence, Indiana and of the Methodist Episcopal Church. This Joshua is occasionally confused with the son of Martin Crow and Rachel Parker (both born in 1830). The other Joshua, however, was in Texas. Joshua died at the home of a foster son, Congressman Eugene B. Crow, whose birth name was Calloway.

Mr. Jacob Johnson, the son of David, and the next to the last born of his children, and who, perhaps, more especially than the rest supplies the place of his father in the world, left the old homestead farm, whereon for a long number of years he had wrought, just prior to his fatherÕs death, and moved upon Òthe Middle Runl farm,Ó in the same township, to which he has made many additions by purchase until his present landed estate covers about a thousand excellent acres.  He married in 1852 Elizabeth Knotts, a native of Virginia.  They have had five sons and two daughters.  Four sons and two daughters are now living and residing with their father, and being industrious and faithful children are adding to the worth of the already valuable homestead farm.  Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are members of the Mennonite Church.

2.  JOHNSON -- Jacob Johnson died at his home in German township, Feb. 7, 1895, aged about 70 years. He was a prominent citizen and a remarkable man in some ways. His wife was Elizabeth Knotts, to whom he was married in 1852, and who died in May, 1894. She was well equipped for a farmer's wife, and much of her husband's success was due to her aid. Mr. Johnson wanted to own "all the land that joined him," and at the time of his death owned about 1,200 acres of fertile soil. He was a man of great industry and energy, and a good neighbor and friend. He was an active, helpful member of the Mennonite church. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Nancy Cameron, and two sons, John and Lawrence Johnson. The funeral was on Sunday, the 10th.

Johnson.-On the 2d of May 1894, near McClellandtown, in Fayette Co., Pa., Sister Elizabeth, wife of Bro. Jacob Johnson, aged 69 yrs., 7 mo., 28 d. She was a faithful member of the Mennonite denomination for many years, a devoted wife, and good mother. The family realizes the force of the words, "What is home without a mother!" The writer was to see her a few days before she died, and in conversation with her on her hope for eternity she said, "I am fully resigned to my Master's will; I am ready to go home." Our loss is her gain. She was buried on the 25th in the Masontown Mennonite burying ground, followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. Funeral service by Thomas Neel and Jno. N. Curr from Prov. 14:18.
