His father owned land on Roanoke section next to John SMITH'S Great
Licks Tract on Smiths Creek opposite the mouth of Glade Creek. Could this be
Mary's father? Family lore has Thomas Akers as a slave owner maybe as many as
nine, when he came to Roanoke, Virginia. He and one brother inherited some of
his father's land and sold that lying near the present Roanoke County line in
1773.

You can take US 150 from New Albany, IN and
go to State Road 335, turn right, go approx 3 miles turn left on Losson Road.
Go about 1 mile down Losson road and the Home and Cabin of Bill Collings that
recently passed away is on your right, appears to be like a pioneer village. I
was told that the cabin was modeled after one of Abraham Lincoln's Cabins he
lived in. Mr Collings passed away in 2001 and I'm not sure what the status of
this property and cemetery will be. Several years back permission was given to
remove the remains from Heil Cemetery of Thomas, Joseph L and Joseph's wife
Anne.

Additional info: From BenjaminÕs great grandson, Benjamin Eurastus
Akers' letter (written when he was 71 years old,) we find an elaborate tale of
bravery and strategy that shows how, over the years, a story gets intertwined
and embellished." Thomas Akers (II) a boy of twelve, and his brother
Benjamin Akers lived in Virginia, and were born just before the Revolutionary
War. Just after the War closed (that would be 1783,) they were kidnapped by
three Indians, who made off for the Kentucky wilderness with them. The boys
understood woodcraft, and under took to mark a trail so their neighbors could
follow, but the Indians caught them at it, and told them they would be killed
if they did not quit it, so they had to desist. After a few days out the Indians
quit watching them at night, so they fixed a plan that they might escape, or
die in the attempt. The plan was for the older to take a gun and a tomahawk and
try to kill two of the Indians, while the younger was to kill one with a
tomahawk. After every one was quiet and asleep, as the Indians thought, the
boys undertook their task, and succeeded in their effort.
The boys then each took a rifle and
ammunition and started to find the way home. This would be a big undertaking
even for a man, let alone boys so young. After awhile, in order to get away,
they had to separate and take it alone. The older took a route to the north,
and finally made his way to Penn. The younger one ran across some emigrants
that were going to Kentucky, and he joined up with them, and made his way to
Crab Orchard."

AKERS, Peter, D. D., Methodist Episcopal
clergyman, born of Presbyterian parentage, in Campbell County, Va., Sept. 1,
1790; was educated in the commons schools, and, at the age of 16, began
teaching, later pursuing a classical course in institutions of Virginia and
North Carolina. Having removed to
Kentucky, after a brief season spent teaching at Mount Sterling in that State,
he began the study of law and was admitted to the bar in 1817. Two years later he began the
publication of a paper called "The Star," which was continued for a
short time. In 1821 he was
converted and joined the Methodist church, and a few months later began
preaching. In 1832 he removed to
Illinois, and, after a year spent in work as an evangelist, he assumed the
Presidency of McKendree College at Lebanon, remaining during 1833-34; then
established a "manual labor school" near Jacksonville, which he
maintained for a few years. From
1837 to 1852 was spent as stationed minister or Presiding Elder at Springfield,
Quincy and Jacksonville. In latter
year he was again appointed to the Presidency of McKendree College, where he
remained five years. He was then
(1857) transfered to the Minnesota Conference, but a year later was compelled
by declining health to assume a superannuated relation. Returning to Illinois about 1865, he
served as Presiding Elder of the Jacksonville and Pleasant Plains Districts,
but was again compelled to accept a superannuated relation, making Jacksonville
his home, where he died, Feb. 21, 1886.
While President of McKendree College, he published his work on "Biblical
Chronology," to which he had devoted many previous years of his life,
which gave evidence of great learning and vast research. Dr. Akers was a man of profound
convictions, extensive learning and great eloquence. As a pulpit orator and logician he probably had no superior
in the State during the time of his most active service in the denomination to
which he belonged.

Mahaska Co., Iowa, 1887
ALANSON BRYAN, one of the pioneers of `49 in
this county, was born in Greene
County, Ohio, Feb. 8, 1808. He is a son of Morrison and Rhoda, (Johnson) Bryan,
who were natives of Virginia, and whose parents came from Ireland. He was bred to farm life, and received but a
limited education, the feeble health of his father devolving the household
cares upon Alanson, who during all
his young days, and until he reached the age of manhood, was the mainstay of the family, and the prop of
his father's declining years. The
subject of this notice, after reaching manhood, united in marriage with Miss Easter
Mendenhall, a native of Ohio. To them
were born eleven children, two of whom died in infancy; one, Morrison
G., died at the age of twenty-one
years. John M. lives at Montezuma; Rachel, the wife of Joseph Bone, resides in
Washington Territory; Dennis, WilliamA., Bedy, Neri E, and Andrew A. live at
Montezuma; Talitha, now Mrs. Homer, resides in Poweshiek County. In
1849 Mr. Bryan loaded his family
and household goods into three covered wagons and started for the
boundless West, arriving at Oskaloosa, this State, October 12, after ajourney
of thirty-two days. They settled on section 31, of Adams Township, where our
subject had, the previous spring, purchased 200 acres of land. Here he lived for twenty years, following the
occupation of farming, and changed
the raw prairie of 1849 to one of the best improvedand most highly cultivated
farms in the county. In 1869 he sold the farm for $50 per acre, removed to
Hamilton County, Iowa, invested a portion of his capital in a flouring-mill,
and resided there for about six years,
when, on account of the death of his wife, he gave up housekeeping and
has since made his home with his son, Andrew A., at Montezuma. Alanson Bryan is a man of great energy and
force of character, was a cautious, prudent manager, always exercising proper
economy in his business, and made
his life a great success. At the age of seventy-eight years he made a trip to
Western Kansas, by team, merely for the purpose of enjoyment.

Grandmother called him John, part of the time he went by John and
other times by Daniel on census . His obit says he had two children by Asenath
Mendenhall but one son not found on any census with Daniel John and Jane Fields
Evans and he would have only been listed with Daniel and Jane if still living
in 1850 . 1860 census in Poweshiek Co. only shows Morrison Gabriel Evans of
Asenath's children .So if there was another son he had to have died in Greene
Co., Ohio as an infant .

Aseneth and she married Charles Samuel
Meldrem
4. Gail Erickson - My great grandfather's sister
Aseneth Evans husband went by Samuel Meldrem most of the time. Now I got a
history on John Allison Evans and also on William's son Thomas William Evans
but they have things wrong
especially since I found Thomas William
Evans and the other children of William L.
Evans and Dolly Glass through a
sister's obituary who supposedly died as an infant by the history on Thomas
William, also believe I have found William and Dolly Glass Evans son George who
also supposedly died as an infant by this history but according to Malinda M.
Evans Brees obituary he was very much alive in 1904 . Malinda looks to be the
Matilda M. Evans listed on the 1850 census in Green Co, Ohio. Both of these
history's say that George Evans , William and Daniel John Evans father was born
in Wales but Daniel John gives on census that his father was born in Virginia
and that his mother Mary Bryan Evans was born in North Carolina. In the
beginning of my search I was told that James Daniel Evans was a bother of my
Daniel John Evans , but not so as it turns out James Daniel is a nephew as he
is the son of William L. Evans and Dolly Glass . The only other brother of
Daniel John Evans that I have found so far is Andrew Sampson Evans who married
Jane Saville . A sister of Daniel, William and Andrew's was also supposed to
have moved to Poweshiek Co. , Iowa but so far no luck in finding her. Her name
supposedly Elizabeth Margaret Evans ? Johnson .

OLD RESIDENT
John Evans Passes Away Near Searsboro at Age
of Ninety-Five.
John Evans, one of the oldest citizens of this county died Friday night
at the home of Grant Johnson near Searsboro, after a lingering illness. He
suffered from a cancer on the face and other complications incident to old age.
He was 95 years and 6 months old when death claimed him.
The deceased was one of the pioneer citizens of this section of the
state and one of the oldest at the time of death, when a long and busy life was
closed.
He was born in Greene county, Ohio, November, 1818. While a young man he
was married while in Ohio to Asenith Mendenhall. She was permitted to enjoy his
companionship a few years when death visited the home and left the husband
alone. Later he was married to Miss Jane Fields, who in 1854 came with him to
Iowa. They settled in Mahaska county and two years later moved to a farm which
he purchased in Scott township. Here they resided for many years. The good wife
passed away to the great beyond a quarter of a century ago leaving the husband
and sons and daughters to mourn their loss.
Mr. Evans continued to live on the farm until declining years compelled
a change. He resided with members of the family at different times and for
several months made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Grant Johnson where he died.
Four sons and two daughters survive, Morrison of Nebraska, Alvin of
California, Carleton of near Searsboro, John of Brooklyn ; Mrs. Elizabeth
Johnson of South Dakota, Mrs. Meldrem of Brooklyn.
The remains were taken to Brooklyn where funeral services were held
Monday afternoon and interment was made in the cemetery near Old Brooklyn.
The deceased was an uncle of Dennis, Bedy, Andrew and John Bryan and
Mrs. Talitha Harner of this city, all of whom attended the funeral except John
Bryan who was not able to go.
John Evans was known by all the older citizens of this county. He was
truly a pioneer of Iowa.

Every old soldier in the county will be interested in knowing that their
old, afflicted comrade, Andrew S. Evans, has been granted a pension of fifty
dollars per month by a special act of congress, the bill being introduced and
pushed through by Congressman Lacey. As soon as the bill passed Mr. Lacey
telegraphed T.B. Applegate who at once notified Mr. Evans. It has taken much
hard work to get the bill through and many delays necessarily resulted. Mr.
Evans will not long survive, but this recognition by the government he fought
to save will serve to cheer him in his last days.

DEATH OF A.S. EVANS
A.S. Evans an old citizen of this county died at his home near
Searsboro, Friday, March 24, 1899, after an untold suffering with cancer of the
face.
Comrade Evans was a veteran of the war in Company C, 28th Iowa Infantry
and a member of Wisner Post G.A.R. of this place.
The Post attended the funeral in a body going from here to Searsboro and
from there to Forest Home Sunday, March 25, 1899, where the funeral sermon was
preached by Judge Smith, of Albion, after which the remains were laid to rest
in the cemetery, near that place, under the ritualistic service of the Grand
Army of the Republic.
The pall bearers were Cap't. George Phillips, Cap't. J.W. Carr,
Comrades, John W. Willsen, J.B. Roach?, J.G. Rayburn and Sheriff Binegar,
members of the same regiment with Comrade Evans, as was also Commander T.J.
Harden, Flagbearer, J.H. Porter, T.S. Applegate, J.D. Evans and B.F. Swangle.
About fifty soldiers were in attendance and marched from church to the
cemetery. The hymns that were sung by the choir and audience in the service had
been selected by Comrade Evans. The church was taxed to its greatest capacity
to accommodate the large numbers in attendance.
The veterans of '61 to '63 are rapidly passing to that eternal camping
ground, the bivouac of the dead.

Andrew S. Evans was born in Greene county, Ohio, March 15, 1823 and died
at his home in Searsboro, Iowa, March 23, 1899. In 1851? he moved to Iowa and
settled near Forest Home. He was married to Miss Jane Sarvill ( Saville) in
1856. He enlisted in the service in 1861, came home with an honorable discharge
in '64 and in '66 moved to Searsboro. To Mr. and Mrs. Evans were born 10
children, 4 sons and 6 daughters, 7 of whom preceded him to the better world. The
three remaining were permitted to be with and care for him, and who with the
bereaved mother deeply mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father.
He was a faithful member of the Christian church, being firm in his faith in
God and his works, but remarkably modest in his religious conduct. The most
beautiful feature of his life was his kind disposition, strick integrity and
constant zeal to home and loved ones. Through all his sufferings he would sing
God's praises oftimes, saying if it was not for the hope he had in the Lord,
his sufferings would be almost unbearable. Besides a widow, three children and
one brother, John D. Evans of Brooklyn, Iowa, a host of relatives and friends
are left to mourn the loss of one whose life was a true testimony for Jesus.
The cold winter is passing away. The spring flowers and birds are coming. We
cannot keep all our friends with us, but let us remember that God never mingles
a cup of sorrow for his children without a good purpose. What we may regard as
our greatest loss, in God's own time and way, may prove our greatest gain.
"This weeping may endure for a night and joy cometh to the morning."
Funeral services were held in the Christian church at Forest Home, by Rev. W.C.
Smith of Albion, Iowa, after which the G.A.R. lodge of Montezuma took charge of
the remains and the body was laid to rest in the Forest Home cemetery. One by
one the old comrades of the grand army are being mustered out.

Yes this obit calls his brother as John D.
Evans . But you can see it is really hard to tell if his actual name was John
Daniel or Daniel John .
Mr. A.S. Evans of Searsboro bored an 80 foot
well and struck a good vein, the water rising in the well 60 ft. the first
night.

JANE E. EVANS
Jane Estaline Saville was born near
Xenia, Ohio, March 11, 1833 and departed this life at her home in Searsboro,
Iowa, August 25, 1922, at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 14 days. Her death came after an illness of
about nine days due principally to the infirmities of old age.
At the age of ten years she came with her parents, William and Jennie
Saville to Iowa and settled near West Point, Lee county. After the death of her father and two
older brothers, she removed with her mother and younger brother to Poweshiek
county and to what was later called Forest Home, in the year of about 1850.
April 28, 1856, she was united in marriage to Andrew Sampson Evans. To this union were born 10
children. Seven, with the father
preceding the mother in death. The
father passed away March 24, 1899.
The three children who survive their mother are Charles Ibra Evans and
Clara Jane Evans of Searsboro and Andrew Morrison Evans of New Sharon, together
with Andrew's wife and daughter, Wanda, the only grandchild of the
deceased. These of the immediate
family with a host of relatives and friends are left to mourn her death.
The subject of this sketch is the last to depart this life of a family
of eight children. Her mother and
three of her own children died during the Civil War which filled her cup of
sorrow to overflowing and left memories which could never be erased.
She had long been a faithful and consistent member of the Christian
church at Forest Home. Although
not able to attend services during late years, her faith never waivered and she
died strong in the Bible teachings of the church with which she united, and
with the Christ life as her ideal.
Immediately following the Civil War, she with husband and children
located in the vicinity of Searsboro, where she spent the remaining of her days
in an useful and influential life.
Her friends were numbered by her acquaintances, to whom she was
familiarly known as Aunt Jane.
She was ready and willing to exchange this earthly home for no other
than the Heavenly home for which she had made thorough preparation.
After a short service at the house, on Sunday p.m. of August 27, 1922,
the remains were taken to the Christian church at Forest Home where the funeral
sermon was preached by Rev. A.B. Cornell, pastor of the Christian church at New
Sharon. The body was interred in
the Forest Home cemetery by the side of her husband and children.
Special friends and relatives were in attendance from Marshalltown, New
Sharon and Lynnville, besides many from the Searsboro and Forest Home
communities.
We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all who helped us in so many
ways, Christian deeds, kind words and beautiful flowers, during the illness and
death of our mother and grandmother, Mrs. Jane Evans.

Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties,
Iowa, (Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), pp. 526-27:
SPENCER C. AKERS, residing on section 34,
Grand River Township, is one of the old and well-known pioneers of Decatur
County, having been identified with the growth and advancement of the county
for thirty-five years. He has assisted in the building of roads, bridges,
churches and school-houses, and has always taken an active interest in
everything pertaining to the advancement of education or religion in the
community where he resides, and is numbered among the representative citizens
of Decatur County. Mr. Akers was born in Putnam County, Indiana, January 17,
1826, a son of Bedy and Lydia (Collings) Akers, natives of Shelby County,
Kentucky, the latter being a descendant of the Collings family, of whom thirty
were killed at the Indian war, in the first settlement of Kentucky. They reared
a family of nine children -- Emily Jane, William C., Catherine, Spencer C.,
Elizabeth, Benjamin, Thomas, Bedy and Lydia Ann. In 1839 the parents immigrated
with their family to Chariton County, Missouri, and there our subject was
reared, from his fourteenth year till 1844. His early life was spent in
assisting with the work of the farm, and in attending the log-cabin
subscription schools of his neighborhood. In 1844 he returned to Putnam County
where he was married December 12, of that year to Miss Elizabeth J. Ader, of
Putnam County, a daughter of Solomon and Elizabeth Ader. To them have been born
thirteen children, nine are living -- M. W., a Baptist minister, located at
Burlingame, Kansas; Armilda, Thomas M., Eveline E., Racine K., Fidelia, Garrett
W., Spencer Grant and Benjamin Eurastis. In the fall of 1845 Mr. Akers removed
to Mercy County, Missouri, residing there and in Grundy County till 1850. April
17, 1850, he started with an ox team for California, passing through the
hardships and privations known only to those who have crossed the plains. On
arriving at Salt Lake City he met Brigham Young, and beyond Salt Lake he viewed
the grounds of the Mountain Meadow Massacre. On arriving in California he
engaged in mining, which he followed for twelve months, returning home by way
of the Isthmus of Panama, Cuba, and New Orleans, to Grundy County, Missouri. In
September, 1851, he came to Decatur County, Iowa, and located two miles west of
Leon in Center Township, where he entered 120 acres of school land, and eighty
acres of land from the Government, and there he erected a log cabin and commenced
the improvement of his property. He was one of a committee of three to locate
the county seat of Decatur County, of the second location by act of
Legislature, the other two members being John Jordan and Wilson Worford. In
1864 he left Center Township, and settled on the farm where he has since made
his home, which is one of the best farms in Grand River Township. His land is
under a high state of cultivation, with a good residence, large and commodious
barn, and a fine orchard, and the entire surroundings of the place show the
thrift and good management of its owner. In politics Mr. Akers is a Democrat.
He was appointed county supervisor to fill a vacancy, and was afterward twice
elected to the same office, a position he filled in all about five years, with
credit to himself and to the best interests of the county. Mr. Akers is a
worthy member of the Masonic fraternity."

1. Portrait & Biographical Album of Mahaska Co.,
Iowa, 1887
WILLIAM A. BRYAN, of Prairie Township, was born
in Greene County, Ohio,
Oct. 18, 1835, a son of Alanson and Easter
(Mendenhall) Bryan, whose
biography see elsewhere in this book. He came
with his parents to Iowa in
1849, with whom he remained, working on the farm
with his father, and
receiving a common school education. On Dec. 25,
1856, he was married to
Miss Catherine M. Pearson, a native of Logan
County, Ohio, born Dec. 7,
1838, and a daughter of Rev. William and
Catherine (Pickrell) Pearson,
the former a native of North Carolina, and the
latter of Virginia. Mr.
and Mrs. Bryan became the parents of nine
children, two of whom died in
infancy, Elma A. at the age of fourteen years,
and Charles F. was killed
by lightning at the age of twenty-one years.
Five children are yet
living, viz: Lillian, Fred H., Ernest E., Willie
A. and Walter E. Shortly
after his marriage Mr. Bryan purchased a farm in
Poweshiek County, and
cultivated it until 1871, when he sold out and
purchased 160 acres of raw
prairie on section 36, of Prairie Township, to
which he has added until
his present farm embraces 256 acres of very fine
land, all in a high
state of cultivation and with the best class of
improvements. Politically
Mr. Bryan is a Republican. He cast his first presidential
vote for
Fremont, in 1856, and has held several local
offices. He has never
connected himself with any religious or secret
society, is a man of
liberal education, and able to express himself
intelligently upon general
subjects. He gives much attention to
stock-raising, in which he has been
very successful, and is one of the leading
farmers of Mahaska County, as
well as one of its best citizens. He manages his
business prudently and
cautiously, is a kind and indulgent husband and
father, and greatly
esteemed by a large circle of friends and
acquaintances.

OBITUARY CARLTON G. EVANS
Carlton G. Evans, son of D. J. and Jane Fields Evans, was born on
September 29, 1855. He died at his home in Brooklyn December 10, 1930, aged 75
years, 2 months and 11 days.
He was born in Mahaska county near Oskaloosa, and has spent his life in
Iowa with the exception of a short time spent in South Dakota. He was the third
of a family of seven children. He leaves to mourn his passing two sisters, Mrs.
R. R. Johnston of Broadland, South Dakota, and Mrs. Sam Meldrem of Brooklyn,
two brothers, John A. Evans of Brooklyn and Marion Evans of Holyoke, Colo.,
together with a number of nephews and nieces. A great number of friends, as
well as relatives, will mourn his passing.
Carl, as he was called by those who knew him well, was one of those
strictly honorable citizens who was guided in all of his undertakings by that
infalable guide, his conscience. He never united with any church, yet always
believed in the principles of right, and lived accordingly.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the home
of his brother John A. Evans in north Brooklyn, conducted by Rev. E.W.F.
Holler, pastor of the Presbyterian Church.
