BELOW YOU WILL FIND A PICTURE OF ZACHERIAH M (Martin?) PETTITT
Who was probably the son of Benjamin Pettitt and Rebecca Larrimore Pettitt or George Pettitt and Martha Poindexter Pettitt
The picture of Zacheriah Pettitt was probably made about 1860-65 The picture is a scan of a Xerox copy of an old tin type picture a distant cousin has. I have lost the cousins address and would appreciate it very much if this message is seen for you to email me. Thank You.

I have no positive proof as to who Zacheriah's parents are at this time although I have recently (July 2000) received a copy of two letters dictated by an eighty-seven year old lady who seemd to be giving us the proof we needed to confirm Zacheriah's parents to be Benjamin Pettit and Rebecca Larrimore Pettit/Pettitt. The lady was married to one of Zacheriah's grandsons (more info to follow in the future - possibly a reproduction of her letters). I have been told that she is possibly confused on her information.
After my own research, I came to the conclusion Zacheriah's parents were George Pettitt and Martha Poindexter Pettitt. In the last couple of years, people have told me Zacheriah's parents were Benjamin Pettit and Rebecca Larrimore Pettit. Benjamin and George were brothers. Note that Benjamin is a "3 t" Pettit and Zacheriah is a "4 t" Pettitt. It was quite common in the 1800s for brothers in the same family to spell their names differently. Many people added or dropped letters from their names.
The people that are telling me Zacheriah is the son of Benjamin are telling me he was born in KY. Benjamins other children were born in KY, but according to the census report, Zacheriah was born in North Carolina. This is confusing. I do know that Zacheriah was married in Guilford County, North Carolina. He was living in Guilford County, North Carolina in 1830 with his new wife Elizabeth "Betsy" Willis. I do not know who Betsy's parents were, but family lore says she was part or full Cherokee Indian. There is some information that seems to confirm that fact according to one descendant who has done a great deal of research on our Zacheriah.
