Since 1976 Gordon has been the director/curator of the Old Court House Museum - Eva W. Davis Memorial in Vicksburg. Previously taught high school history and was a reporter for The Vicksburg Post.

Cotton was educated in two local schools, Jefferson Davis and Jett, attended Southwest Mississippi Junior College in Summit and Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas; before earning BA and MA degrees at Mississippi College in Clinton. He is a member of several professional organizations including the Vicksburg and Warren County Historical Society and is a deacon in the Primitive Baptist Church.
