Griswold Phelps Progress Report

Griswold Phelps Progress Report

This site contains information on several generations above and below Griswold Phelps, early settler in Steuben Co., IN, with also a few members of collateral lines. I have called this material a progress report because significant questions remain:

1. Who was Mr. Kittle, the father of Emily (Kittle) Hamblet?
2. Was Emily (Kittle) Hamblet's mother, Harriet, the daughter of Griswold Phelps?

This compilation relies on sources that vary in quality, and errors might be included from those sources as well as from my own mistakes. Comments, additions, and corrections are welcome.

Besides the Phelps-Hamblet-Kittle material generated by my software program, other ancestral lines are represented here in links below and in the photo above. Ancestral surnames represented in the photo are Lahowetz (alt. Lahovec and other spellings), Stewart, Bawiec, Kiechel, and Partsch.

*NEW* -- January 2007: Small changes, a new individual (Verle McMurry) and:
A photo of the gravestone of Samuel Hamblet, who died in 1817. (See link - camera icon - at his narrative.)

New information and photos from cousin Sandi McCoy about James and Ida (Hamblet) Schrantz and some of Ida's siblings. With much gratitude, I thank Sandi for the information, the fine early photo of the Daniel Kiechel family, the James and Ida Schrantz wedding photo, and the photo of some unidentified Hamblets with Estella and Jim McMurry. (See Estella's narrative, click on the camera icon.) Please view this photo if you think you might be able to identify others. The photo includes a Mother and Father Hamblet, and "Father Hamblet" is likely to be, I think, one of Alford and Emily's sons.

Sandi is researching family history, including the lives of Emily and Alford Hamblet after they left Nebraska, and she would love to hear from you if you want to share details. Her contact information is in the "Sources," which can be reached with the link below.

*NEW* -- July 2007: Joshua Horton, father of Rhoda (Horton) Magie, has been added. Alford Hamblet has a new note (see his estimated death date) placing him back in Springview, Nebraska, in October 1910.

*NEW* -- October 2009: Changes in design and text, several new individuals, and significant new information about Emily (Phelps) Farlee.

*NEW* -- January 2010: Additional information on several individuals and most significantly, obituaries for Alford and Emily (Kittle) Hamblet.

*NEW* -- October 2010: Minor design changes and minor additions of data.

*NEW* -- April 2011: The addition of Seth Hamblet and his sister Ella as well as Ella's husband, John W. Zirkel; the Hamblet group photo better identified and posted to Seth (as well as being posted, as formerly, to Estella Hamblet); other minor changes.

*NEW* -- April 2013: additions of census and newspaper data including census entries from Masonville, NY (1820, 1830, and 1840) that remove all doubt from my mind about Anna Graves as Samuel M. Hamblet's first wife. A new link, below, to the transcription of Brown family letters, 1852 and 1854. In the new notes and appendix, I present updated information on the families Brown, Stewart, Hopkins, Seamans, and Hungerford with additional surnames Phillips, Wade, Allen, Westcott, and Southworth.

*NEW* -- May 2013: repair of broken links and other minor fixes.
