  • To help those working on Parrott genealogy, this is an attempt to catalogue all the P-rr-tt families of North America in one comprehensive web site, and to assist with the interpretations of an ongoing P-rr-tt Surname DNA project. Already, enough information is available from DNA testing to know that the Parrott surname [derived from the French for little Peter, i.e., Peterson] is used by many unrelated families. The era when P-rr-tts were considered to be 'Kinsmen all,' as proclaimed in Links that Bind, is long over. Thus the current goals are to:

    • Define which P-rr-tt families are related to each other
    • Connect with the corresponding P-rr-tt families in Europe, Australia, and elsewhere
Thus far, most of the DNA testing has been of the Southern families, which has made it possible to assign various families into family groups. DNA testing is most lagging for the New England families. Additional DNA testing should make it possible to consolidate more of the P-rr-tt families listed below.

Today, the majority of P-rr-tts in North America trace back to just 7 out of the original families: William of Talbot Co., Richard of Middlesex Co., Lawrence of Gloucester/Mathews Co., Needham Perrit from the Carolinas, Francis Parrott from North Carolina, Frederick of Shenandoah Co., and Albert Parot, a French Canadian whose descendants settled in New York and Vermont. All the other early P-rr-tt families have far fewer descendants. In addition, there has been a steady stream of P-rr-tt families immigrating from England and France. How many P-rr-tt families are in North America today? As many as 50 is a rough guesstimate.

Families are grouped according to their first location in North America.
Keep in mind that many descendants migrated to various other regions since then. Locations are as follows:
    • Barbados
    • Canada
    • Includes Ontario, New Brunswick & Quebec
    • United States
    • Midwest
    • Includes Iowa & Ohio
    • New England & Midatlantic
    • Includes Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania & Vermont
    • Northwest
    • Includes Oregon
    • South
    • Includes Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee & Virginia

Only a stub of a family tree is available for this family, which is among those with the least documentation. One member is said to have have 10 children, not all of which been identified. Therefore, several members of this family should still be around.

    - Descendants of Samuel Parrott
This another small family, given it only has been in the country a century and a half. However, there are a handful of direct male line descendants still around. This family is particularly known for two baseball players in the early days of baseball: Jiggs and Tacky Tom Parrott.

The Southern families are among the oldest and largest P-rr-tt families, and different branches parted ways long ago. Most Parrotts/Parretts in the Midwest and the West Coast have Southern roots, so they are not listed above. DNA testing has made it possible to start assigning branches to their correct family tree.

    - Descendants of Charles Parrott, b ~1865
    - Descendants of Christopher Parrot, born in 1755
This is a medium-sized family, whose origins remain unclear. Christopher is the first definite family founder, but there is also a Captain William Parrott, born Abt. 1720 in Prince George, Maryland, who is suspected to be his father. Current spelling of surname = Parrott, Parriott
    - Descendants of Francis Parrott of North Carolina
The father of this Francis is commonly reported to be an earlier Francis from Maryland, from the William of Talbot group. Based on DNA results, these reports are not correct. This is the family of Evalyn Scott Parrott, editor of Parrott Talk and author of Links that Bind.
    - Descendants of Henry Parrott, born in Botetourt Co., Virginia, 1782.
Henry A. Parrott, grandson of Henry Parrott, wrote on his confederate pension application that his father was William Lusk Parrott; his grandfather was Capt. Henry Parrott and his great-grandfather was "John Parrott, a Frenchman who came with the French Army and fought with Washington in the war for Independence from England."

James Forrester was traveling by wagon train with his mother and siblings in 1832. Upon reaching Overton Co (TN), he contracted measles so he was left behind. His mother never returned for him. DNA shows his surname at birth was Doss. Noted psychologist & relationship expert, Les Parrott, belongs to this family.
    - Descendants of John Parrott, arrived to Maryland, 1736
This is a medium-sized Parrott family. It was founded by John Parrott, who arrived in Annapolis, MD, in 1736, as an "Emigrant in Bondage" from Newgate Prison, England. The story goes that John Parrott had stolen two shirts in England, and therefore, was sent to American colonies to serve 14 years as an indentured servant. His descendants moved to Fountain Co., Indiana, and from there spread mainly to Illinois, Iowa and Missouri.

This family founded Parrottsville, Cocke Co.k Tennessee, and gave rise to many of the Midwest Parretts/Parrotts. Frederick's descendants are probably the 3rd or 4th largest Parrott family in the US today. The most notable descendant is Jacob Parrott, recipient of the first congressional medal of honor.

Descendants of Frederick Parrott, emigrant from Alsace-Lorraine (or maybe Switzerland) to Shenandoah, Virginia in the 1730's
Parrotts of Sevier & Jefferson Counties, Tennessee
Current thought is that the earliest known ancestor, Henry, is one of the sons of John Parrott Sr. who is enumerated in the census, but whose name does not appear in the records. Not all Parrotts from Jefferson Co. were of the same family.

Parrotts of Bartow & Coweta Counties, Georgia
Current thought is that the earliest known ancestor, Henry, is one of the sons of John Parrott Sr. who is enumerated in the census, but whose name does not appear in the records. Not all Parrotts from Jefferson Co. were of the same family.

    - The Lawrence of Gloucester/Mathews group:

A Lawrence Parrott was transported to Maryland by John Singleton, who claimed a headright for him in 1662. This older Lawrence is presumed to be the ancestor to the Parrotts in this group, and settled in Kingston Parish, Gloucester Co., which became Mathews Co. in 1791. How the various families in this group connect to each other is still not known; a courthouse fire in 1820 destroyed all the records that would have shown how these lines were connected to each other. The Lawrence group is the 2nd largest Parrott family in the US.
    • Family origin: - Evidence suggests England, but definite proof is needed

Descendants of Benjamin Parrott, Sr., who first appears in Guilford (later Rockingham) Co., North Carolina, in 1778.
Descendants of Lawrence Parrott, from Northumberland Co., Virginia, born between 1700 & 1712; died 1746
Descendants of Robert Parrott, Sr., who married Sara Read, Gloucester Co., Virginia
Some trees have Robert going back to George & Lucy Longest, but the connection is rather tenous. After Virginia, this family was in North Carolina before moving on to Tennessee. DNA results hint that a branch of the Benjamin descendants might have gotten grafted on to this group, or vice versa.
Descendants of William Parrott, b ~1814 Georgia, moved to Alabama, then Louisiana

    - The 4 French Brothers: Needham, William, Solomon & Benjamin group:

This is one of the larger P-rr-tt families, but it has had very little reconstruction work done. This family is believed to come from 4 brothers who came from France to help fight in the Revolutionary War.
    • Family origin: - France

    - Descendants of Needham & William Perrit, born ~1748.
Descendants moved to South Carolina and Georgia. This family has such signature names as Needham, Merritt, and Solomon, while the surnames used by today's descendants are Parrott, Perrett, and Perritt.

    - The Richard of Middlesex group:

Today, the descendants of Richard and his brother Robert are the largest Parrott family in the US, and account for about 1 out every 5 Parrotts. The most notable members of this group are William Stuart Parrott, Secretary of the Legation of the United States to Mexico during the Mexican War, and his brother John, who was U.S. Consul in Mazatlán. After the war, John founded a prominent family of bankers in San Francisco. His son, Tiburcio, founded Miravalle winery, better known as the set of the Falcon Crest TV series. NASCAR's Buddy, Brad & Todd Parrott also belong to this family, as does Mike Parrott, former pitcher for the Seattle Mariners.
    • Family origin: - Potton, Bedfordshire, England
Descendants of Amos Parrott (-at, -ett), born in Claiborne County, Mississippi, ~1848
This is an African-American branch of the family. Amos' father is believed to be the Thorp Parrott who moved to Mississippi. This Thorp is descended from Nathaniel & Penelope Irby Parrott, though exactly how is still unclear.
Descendants of John & Ruth Parrott, of Lee, Lunenburg and Halifax, Virginia, mid 1700's
This branch of the family gave rise to the San Francisco Parrotts.
Descendants of Luke Parrott, who first appears in Franklin Co., Virginia, 1797, age 21
Descendants of Nathaniel & Penelope Irby Parrott, of Bristol Parish, Henrico Co., Virginia

    • Nathaniel Parrott
Descendants of Richard Perrot of Middlesex Co., Virginia
There is more myth and misinformation around Richard Perrott than around any other Parrott. All trees to the contrary, Richard was not the son of John & Prunella Parrott, or of Sir John Perrot, or of James & Dorothy Parrott. He was baptized on 10 Feb 1621/22 in Potton, Bedfordshire, England, to Thomas and Margaret Parratt. Richard was a vestryman of Christ Church, a Commissioner of Lancaster Co. in 1656, elected High Sherriff on 5 June 1657 and Senior Justice of Middlesex County Court from 1673 until his death. He did not bear arms- with 3 pears or otherwise. Many reports to the contrary, Richard was not related to other contemporary Parrotts in Maryland and Virgigia (such as Francis, Lawrence, and William). Also contrary to many published reports, the weight of the evidence is that Richard only had one child, Richard Jr., and only married twice. Current spelling of last name is Parrott and Parrett.

    - The William of Talbot group:

This family would be the 3rd or 4th largest Parrott family in the US. Many descendants are still in Maryland, but most have moved throughout the midwest. The most notable descendant may be Marcus Junius Parrott, congressman from Kansas.

While the early years of the family have been reconstructed, the records start to fail in the late 1700's. A few of the modern families can be traced to the early 1800's in Talbot county, but the connections to the main family remain elusive. The repeated use of the same few names over many branches and generations makes tree assembly very difficult, and many if not most of the on-line trees are haphazardly constructed. Even here, some of the currently listed branches lack proper documentation, so use carefully. Overall, a lot of reconstructive work is still needed to piece the overall family tree together.

This family is frequently cited as the origin of the North Carolina Parrotts founded by Francis Parrott, but DNA precludes such a relationship.
    • Family origin: - Probably England; definite proof is lacking

    The Francis Parrotts of Maryland
They are not known to have any living descendants

    • Maryland documents that make reference to a Francis Parrott
Descendants of Gabriel Parrott, of Talbot Co., Maryland, appears 1670, dies 1704 in Calvert Co., Maryland
There are no known male descendants from this line. Although there is speculation that Gabriel was a son of William of Talbot, he is not mentioned in William's will. Nonetheless, both William and Gabriel's son used the same tree in their seals-- a fruit tree-- suggesting William and Gabriel may have been brothers, or related in some other way.
Descendants of William Parrott, of Talbot & Calvert Co., Maryland, early 1650's
William married Anne Abrahams; her sister Sarah was married to Francis Parrott of Calvert County (see above), suggesting a relationship between Francis and William.
Unlinked families tracing back to Talbot Co., Maryland.
These families all trace back to Talbot county, and are probably related to the main Talbot county Parrott family. However, no member from these branches has done a DNA test, making it impossible to verify the relationship to the main tree. If related, paper records need to be found to connect them to the proper place within the main tree.

    Unplaced Parrott lines:

There is enough of a paper record to suggest that these families are really branches of other families listed above. However, the necessary paper trail needed to place them in their correct groups is still missing. DNA testing could help make up for the missing paper trail.

The Gloucester and Matthews County Parrotts
The Lawrence Parrott who was transported to Maryland in 1662 is considered to be the one who settled in Gloucester county by 1667. Several lineages later appear in the area (split off as Matthews county), who are probably his descendants, as might be the Lawrence Parrott previously listed from Northumberland. None of these lineages listed here have had their DNA tested:
