The origin of Nathaniel Parrott has long been a mystery, as has the origin of Luke Parrott. A "Delivered to Luke Parrott" notation on the left margin (see photo, below) on a deed probated in Pittsylvania county on 16 January 1786, whereby Thorpe Parrott is selling land to his father Nathaniel, suggests Luke is of that family; DNA also shows Luke related to Richard Perrot of Middlesex.

The first Nathaniel is not the right age to be a grandson or great-grandson of Richard, making it most likely that Nathaniel is descended from Richard's brother, Robert. Robert has been a bit of mystery, and there is only one known reference to his existence: On a deed dated 4 January 1672, whereby Richard Perrot of Middlesex County gent., specifies that "... and in case of no issue [my lands] go to my brother Robert Parrott, two eldest sons and their heirs."

The family tree reconstructed below is still very speculative in some parts-- use carefully!

1. Nathaniel PARROTT Sr. was born in 1702 in Henrico Co., Virginia and died in 1742 in New Bern, Craven Co., North Carolina at age 40.

General Notes: 10 June 1723: Bristol Parish Vestry Book. It is ordered that Nathaniel Parrott being lame his right hand being cut off, be acquitted from paying parish levies.

19 January 1726: Henrico Co., VA Deeds and Wills, 1713-1728, p 943. Nathaniel Parrott witness to transaction of Peter Jones Sr., along with Daniel Jones, George Williams, & James Thompson.

10 November 1726: It is further ordered that Nathaniel Parrott be clerk for ye Chapple at Sapponey and he be allowed 2000 pounds of tobacco per annum by parish.

28 September 1728: Va. Patent Bk 14, 1728-32, p 82. Nathaniel Parrot patented 76 acres New Land in Brunswick County on South side of Waqua, below Cory's path.

21 October 1731: Paid Nathaniel Parrott for cleaning ye church, cleaning ye chest, cleaning round ye church, bolts and staples, for washing curples, for horse block, for enlarging church yard.

June 1732: Brunswick County, Bk 1, p 5 Nathaniel Parrot's mark is OR.

21 November 1733: Nathaniel Parrott is discontinued as clerk of Sapponie Chapple.

27/9 July 1735: Brunswick Co., Va Deeds, Wills, Bk 1, pp 109-210. John Linch of North Carolina sells land adjacent to John Irby and Michael Wall. Witnesses: Nathaniel Parrott, George Hicks, John Douglass, John Wall.

February 1736. Brunskwick County, Bk 1, p 122. Joseph Stroud vs Nathaniel Parrot. 1 1/10 pounds is due by account. Plaintiff came into court and made oath to the same, and it was then ordered that defendent pay plaintiff sum plus costs. "I have endeavoured to take said Parrott, but he cannot be found." Moses Dunkley.

Craven County, North Carolina. Bk 2, p 114. Will of John Parryer of Craven precinct dated 31 May 1737, was proved in Open Court by the oath of Penelope Parratt one of the Subscribing Evidences thereto who also declares on her Oath that she saw Wm. Hopper & Nathll. Parrott sign as Evidences to the said Will wherein the said John Paryer hath Nominated & Appointed John Simon, John Waxdale & Walpolia Gillet to Execution of the same who took the Oath of an Executrix as the Law direct. Order'd that Letters Testamentory Issue thereon & that Mr. Secretary have notice thereof.

Penelope Parrot, widow and relict of Nathll Parrott, Exhibited into this Court an Inventory of the Estate of her late husbands Estate, deceased, as far forth as hath come to her hands upon oath & prays an order for the Sale of the said Estate on the 16 July. Granted.

Nathaniel married Penelope Irby, daughter of Joshua IRBY Sr. and Elizabeth Jane LUDSON, in 1722. Penelope was born in 1718 in Henrico Co., Virginia.

Joshua Irby, father of plaintiff put land at her disposal and built her a house and if she would live there, he would give her fee simple title to land. Joshua Irby died 11 Dec. 1746 testate and devised the land away. Depositions. William Burges, aged 27, 31 July 1752 Chesterfield; Mary Portman, aged 24, same date and place; Mathias Chitwood, aged 66, same place; Anthony Irby, son of Joshua. Penelope Irby married against her father's will and ran away to New Bern, NC where her husband died, leaving her poor with several children. She returned to her father who built her a house, cleared fields, etc.

From father's will: "As for my daughter Penelope Parrot, let her keep what is in her possession and that is more than she does deserve."

General Notes: One or both of the second and third husbands (Thomas Hudson and Moses Overton) of her mother might really be the daughter's spouses. Otherwise Penelope would have had to be ~90 years old at the time of her third marriage.

2. Thomas PARROTT Sr. (Nathaniel Sr.¹) was born on 30 December 1724 in Bristol Parish, Virginia and died in Fairfield Co., South Carolina.

1790, Thorp Parrott is living in Fairfield County, South Carolina, was were Thomas Parrott Sr and Thomas Parrott Jr.

General Notes: Born in Brunswick, moved to Craven Co, with his parents, then returned to Brunswick, then moved to Halifax and then Franklin Co.

-1783- taxed along with Joseph Parrott in Franklin Co. Nathaniel paid no tax, indicating he may have been tax free for some reason (age or disability?). Perhaps this Joseph was a son?

-29 July 1785. Buys 220 acres in Pittsylvania Co. from his son Thorpe, for £33. Both are from Henry Co. Nathaniel was apparently delinquent in paying taxes, and the land was later sold at public auction in 1791 and 1793.

- 1790- Nathaniel Jr. appears on the 1790 reconstructed census for Liberty Co., Georgia.

General Notes: Mentioned in her step-grandfather's will, 2 Dec 1795, between bequests to his grand daughter, and to his wife, Penelope: "I give and bequeath to Susanna Martin Parrott one negro girl named Nancy, also one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever."

Moved to Greene Co., Georgia, then Jasper, then Troupe. She was 75 in 1850 and 90 in 1860

August 1799 Thorp Parrot (X) of Fairfield County, Planter, to Joseph May Railey and Thomas Woodward Railey, 295 acres, a resurvey and is on Little River and consists of parts of two tracts: (1) 165 acres on the East side of Little River granted to Edward McGraw on 25 July 1775, and (2) 50 acres out of 150 acres granted to Patrick Morriss. Witnesses: William McMorris Jr., George Ashford. Sarah Parrot, wife of Thorp Parrot, signs her dower rights on 20 August 1799. Richard Winn J.P. In 1840 Smith Co, TN, Sharp Parrott was 70-80 years old (born between 1760 and 1770), so is aging more rapidly than chronological time.

Imogene writes: My grandfather served on the Confederate side in the Civil War as a drummer boy. He told mama many stories about the war and the hard times they had. Once, on leave, he went back home to butcher the hogs. After salting them down, he hid them under a bluff near his home. He had barely finished the job when a group of maurading Union soldiers came (he had hidden himself behind a log). They took every bit of food they could find but they didn't find the hogs that had been hidden (or my grandfather). When mother was a little girl, he would come to visit them. He would find a couple of sticks and sit in a chair with a door between his legs and beat the door like a drum and sing the old war songs withs tears streaming down his face remembering when brother fought against brother. My mother, Ollie, would love for her grandfather to come visiting. Dressed in an old black frock coat with a long white beard hanging down his chest. He would always have an orange or something special in his pocket for them when he would come. Mother and all her sisters loved him dearly. He was a traveling minister of the Gospel for many years and was sometimes called the "Walking Parrott" because he walked from one community to another preaching in churches. But before that he was a school teacher in a "Normal School" as his father before him had been. His brother was a circuit judge who rode on horseback to hold court in the county. He is buried in Sipes Cemetery, Shiloh, Cleburne County, Arkansas.
