Another line of early Virginia Parrotts is that of John and Ruth Parrott. While information is available on their descendants, there had been none on John's origin until recently. He is the son of Robert and Catherine Daniel Parrott, which would make him a great-grandson of Richard Perrot of Middlesex Co., VA. Previously, speculations were that John was the son of Nathaniel and Penelope Irby Parrott, though there is no record of them having a son, John. Finally, John was the plantation overseer for Elisha Betts from ~1772-1775 in Lunenburg Co. Elisha was married to Mary Ann Parrott, the daughter of Lawrence Parrott of Gloucester/Northumberland counties, suggesting he could have been related to that family instead of the family of Richard of Middlesex.

With DNA results from John's descendants now on file, along with the scant historical records also available, it is now possible to determine John was the son of Robert and Catherine Daniel Parrott. Some of John & Ruth's descendants moved to Mexico, and later became prominent bankers, shippers, miners, and vintners in San Francisco/San Mateo California in the late 1800's; others moved the northwest, and others remained in the Kentuckiana area.

This is an attempt to place the information available into one place, so as to aid future research. The work presented here includes contributions from various people, particularly Harald Reksten and Cheryl Bills. However, special thanks go to Eunice Wayment Harmon for generously sharing the results of her extensive research on this family. Her search and her labor continue even though she is no longer with us.

The family legend is that Catherine Stuart Parrott died and that James Parrott married again. Apparently none of the children approved of the new wife. She is the reason given for William Stuart's decision to join the U. S. leave home.

"Left home permanently in 1816. His actual movements are difficult to trace, but between 1816 and 1822 he lived part of the time in Cuba and he undoubtedly learned Spanish and studied dentistry in this time. In 1822 Dr. W. S. Parrott, dentist, went to Mexico. By the time he returned to the United States in August of 1826, he acquired a wife by the name of Adele Parrott. A family story says the first wife of William Stuart Parrott (ie, Adele) died and was buried at sea. This story may or may not be true. We do know that William Stuart Parrott's wife, Adele, sailed from Vera Cruz to Philadelphia on 19 August 1826."

1851 - Awarded $71,000.00 plus interest on his claim vs. Mexican Government. The U.S. Government paid this claim under the provisions of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

"Although John Parrott joined William Stuart Parrott in Mexico in 1829, the earliest passport for John was 1711 issued on 5 July 1832. He is described as 22 years of age, Stature 6 feet, Eyes hazel, Nose pug, Mouth large, Chin broad, Hair dark, Complexion fair, and Face round. After working with William Stuart in Mexico City, John started working as a clerk in the mercantile business that William Stuart Parrott and Samuel Talbot established in Mazatlan. Some years later in 1837 John applied to the U.S. Government to be U.S. Consul in Mazatlan. A series of letters in the National Archives, Department of State, Consul Dispatches Mazatlan, 1828-1906 lists the recommendations, qualifications, etc., that John had for the job. It was on 30 December 1837 that John Forsyth wrote John Parrott of his appointment as U.S. Consul in Mazatlan.

"Besides his consular duties, he also had his mercantile business. In 1838 William Talbot left the firm of Parrott, Talbot and Co. The firm dissolved and John Parrott organized a new mercantile house called Parrott and Co.

"During the two-year Mexican-American war period John went from Mexico City to Vera Cruz to New Orleans to Havana to Washington, D.C. He was not reappointed to U.S. Consul to Mazatlan until mid-1848.

"John's resignation as U.S. Consul in Mazatlan was submitted to the department of State on 9 April 1850 and later that same month he left for San Francisco. In the next two years, John bounced back and forth between San Francisco and Guadalajara and paid two visits to Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, in 1851 a fire leveled three of the buildings that he owned in San Francisco; consequently, he decided to build a fireproof granite building."

San Francisco Bulletin dated 31 March 1884 (obituary)
"The Banker [Mr. Parrott] for a long time had disappeared from Montgomery Street, where his face was once so familiar. His declining years have been spent in the quiet of domestic life. Mr. Parrott was a pioneer of pioneers. He was one of the few Argonauts who brought money with him . . . His bank was one of the strongest institutions in San Francisco. It is withstood all the storms unshaken.

"Mr. Parrott belonged to a class of conservative bankers. He preferred that his money should remain in his vaults to be loaned out on weak security. There was no amount of interest that could tempt him. Only one case of a loan on doubtful collateral was quoted, and that was on a lot of hams which subsequently spoiled. 'No more hams' was the usual rejoiner when paper not gilt-edged was ever afterwards presented to the veteran financier . . ."

"In 1845 Captain Andre Castillero formed the New Almaden Company and John Parrott bought on Barra, 1/24th ownership in the mine. By the end of 1861 he had acquired another Barra from James Alexander Forbes. This gave Parrott 1/12th of the ownership, the additional Barra cost Parrott some $34,000. Parrott must have been very proud of the mine as he gave one of his children the middle name of Almaden (Grace Almaden Parrott 1860-1945)."

From The Nob Hill Gazette, May 1982, by J. Roger Jobson.

John Parrott: Portrait of a Pioneer

Baywood was the name John Parrott chose for his 450-acre San Mateo estate. Amid rolling hills, native oak and bay trees, this wealthy financier and shipping magnate built in 1868 a home for his wife, nine children, as staff of 10, plus gardeners and a dozen or more Chinese laborers.

The vast reaches of Baywood were once included in the great Rancho de las Pulgas, a Spanish grant to that distinguished branch of the Arguello family which gave two governors to California 'before the Gringo came.'

The house was a modified Queen Anne Victorian design with finials rising from a balustrade that swept along the length of the second floor. Th unusually symmetrical architecture and the elegant but restrained interior furnishings made an impression as dignified as was the owner himself.

Although the family also had an impressive residence in the city, it was at Baywood amid landscaped gardens and surrounded by his children that Parrott, then aged 57, lived out the active and well-ordered routine of his life.

This gracious existence was the culmination of 40 years of adventure, work and shrewd investment.

Tennessee born, John Parrott at age 18 joined his brother's mercantile and importing business at Mexico City. His passport at that time describes him as 'six feet tall, hazel eyes, large mouth, round face and fair of complexion.' The business was successful and flourished. He was appointed United States Consul at Mazatlan from 1837 to 1846 and reappointed in 1848 until his resignation and move to San Francisco in 1850.

After leaving Mexico, but before settling permanently in San Francisco, 42-year-old Parrott traveled to Mobile, Alabama. There he met and married 24-year-old Abby Meaher. Miss Meaher was reluctant to marry at first and so Parrott, reminiscent of his years in Mexico, engaged musicians to serenade her in front of the hotel where she and her family were staying.

It is true that many of the pioneers to California were men of restricted means and education. Some came to seek their fortune, others to make a fresh start, or in some cases to escape capture and punishment by the law of the land. None of this can be said of Parrott, however, who by 1849 with his California interests well-established from previous visits, arrived in San Francisco with a fortune. He had already proven to be a man of learning and astute business accumen.

Within a few years, Parrott established a banking exchange to purchase gold dust and bullion that adventurous men were digging from the hills and panning from the Sierra streams. A partner in this adventure was W.B. Comstock, the man whose name lives in the annals of the West as the famed Comstock Lode.

The mid-nineteenth century on the Pacific Coast was a period of expanding commerce. California, no longer restricted by Spanish and Mexican jurisdictions, began to attract the shipping attention of the world. A notable characteristic of Parrott was his ability to foresee and adapt to the times. Soon sailing vessels owned or chartered by the Parrott Company sailed the trade routes: quicksilver to Hong Kong, wheat to Liverpool, rice and spices from the Orient and coffee from Central and South America.

Meanwhile, John and Abby Parrott's nine children grew, attended school\endash here, in England and in France\endash traveled abroad, married, participated in the social and cultural life of the city, continued their father's business interests and had children of their own.

Today's descendants of the private and conservative Parrotts continue to be a force in the Bay Area where their lives thread through and contribute richly to the tapestry of the city, giving it continuity, color and durability.

William G. Parrott heads the Parrott Estate Company and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Parrott Ranch Company. William and his poised and stately wife Mary have three sons who represent the fifth generation.

A sampling of other fifth generation Parrott descendants are: Joseph A. Donahoe, V, an active and urbane member of the city's cultural and social life, a graduate student in viticulture at the University of California, Davis, and a member of the governing body of the University of San Francisco's annual symposium; Marc de Tristan, Jr., a graduate of Harvard's School of Business, charity fund-raiser and treasurer of the Nob Hill Association; Richard Thieriot, Editor and Publisher of the San Francisco Chronicle, and his brother Christopher, Vice-President of Western Communication, Inc.; Christian de Guigne, IV, a partner with his brother Charles in the Chateau Senejac Vineyards at Haut Medoc in France, part owner of the New York based travel firm, Ports of Call, and a leading authority in antique arms.

In her definitive biography of her illustrious ancestor, Barbara Donohoe Jostes tells of the death in 1884 at the age of 73 of John Parrott. 'His had been an active life, spanning the years of early trade on the West Coast of Mexico and the Gold Rush. His was the age of sail, the Pony Express, the Overland Mail, the Telegraph, the first steam ships and the building of the Transcontinental Railroad.

'He experienced the devastating fires in the early years of San Francisco, the violent days that brought into being the Vigilantes, and survived the panics in the banking world. Friend of many, exacting himself and others, John Parrott contributed to the advancement of the state and to the city by choice.'

Entered English language school in Massachusetts when he was ten years of age.

Then was educated in Paris. Tiburcio came to San Francisco at age twenty-two to live with his father and stepmother.

The St. Helena Star on 15 May 1885 reports: "Tiburcio Parrott and Fritz Beringer left Friday morning behind a handsome four-in-hand driven by Judge Elgin for a trip to the Sulphur Bank Mine in which property Mr. Parrott is largely interested . . ."

Due to the increasing cost of operation and the declining price of quicksilver, the Sulphur Bank Mine declared bankruptcy in 1883. The final footnote of the operation by Tiburcio Parrott is found in an item in the Napa Register of 7 September 1883: "On the 17th inst. A sale of delinquent stock in Sulphur Bank quicksilver mine of Lake County, will take place in San Francisco at the assessment being twenty-five cents per share. D.O. Mills holds about $4,000 and John Parrott $3,500 worth of the delinquent stock, but the bulk of the stock belongs to Tiburcio Parrott."

Built Miravalle (used as the setting for Falcon Crest TV series) in 1885.

the St. Helena Star sate 4 September 1885 describes the house in construction and the property at that time:
Something less than a year ago, the well-known Forbes place, situated on Spring Mountain, south of the reservoir of the St. Helena Water Works, was purchased by Tiburcio Parrott, a prominent banker of San Francisco, and with the transfer of title commence a system of improvements on this property which has in a few short months changed it almost beyond recognition. Nearly two weeks ago we drove over this fine estate in company with Mr. Parrott, and on every hand our eyes rested on evidences of the wonderful changes accomplished by the well-directed expenditure of abundant means.

    ===
In 1885, its very first year, the parrot Winery produced some 8,300 gallons of wine according to "Vintage of 1885" report published in the St. Helena Star on 20 November 1885. This was quite a respectable beginning for the winery which was to produce some very fine and famous wines. Leon D. Adams writes in The Wines of America, "A duplicate of the Rhine House was built by their uphill neighbor, Tiburcio Parrott. Parrott grew grapes for the Beringers on his great estate, which he called 'Miravalle' for it view of the [Napa] valley. He also made his own wines, and the late Almond R. Morrow once told me that a Miravalle claret called 'Margaux' was the greatest California wine produced before Prohibition."

"He and F. Scott Fitzgerald knew each other at the Newman school in New Jersey. Fitzgerald inscribed a copy of his first novel to Stephan "to my brother." Yet their friendship is more or less dismissed by Fitzgerald's biographer as having to do only with a shared relationship to their mentor at the Newman School, Monsignor Sigourney Fay. "
Shane Leslie knew Fay, Fitzgerald, and Stephan, as well as another priest, William Hemmick, about this time (around 1910 or so). His letters with Hemmick mention Stephan from time to time through the 1950s; I believe Stephan might have worked with or for Hemmick for a time in Paris or Rome."

    ======

The Death of Berry Parrott's Grandfather

Mr. & Mrs. Parrott lived in Tazewell, Tennessee, during the Civil War days. Mrs. Parrott was expecting a baby. Her husband had joined the Union Army and he knew about what time the baby was expected. He asked the officers if he might get off and come home to see about his wife, as she was alone. They let him go home.

As he came near his home the Rebels met him. They shot and killed him. They took his body to his house, opened the door, and threw his body in, nearly on his wife.

This upset her so that she went into labor and she had her baby that very day. The baby was a boy and was the father of Berry Parrott.

    ======
Charles L. (Lipps) Parrott was born in Knox County, Kentucky, Dec. 31, 1873 to John R. and Martha Parrott.

He was married to Mary Basham, Jan. 17, 1895 and to this union was born nine children, five boys and four girls. Charles was born and lived his early life and young manhood on the farm, a lover of livestock and a capable tiller of the soil, though conditions for farming during this period were not the most desirable and a fair return for your investment and hard labor was difficult to achieve. He left the farm therefore in the early years of his middle age and became engaged in the lumber business for a number of years rather successfully.

However, worthwhile timber which had given years of inducement to those who had mastered the saws was fast disappearing from the middle west and the industry was too overcrowded for it to long remain in a profitable or tempting vocation.

Always alert to new developments, he was among to those [who] were early to recognize the straw business as an enterprise with tremendous possibilities accordingly he moved his family to Indianapolis in 1917 where he began bailing straw for the large paper mills of this area and also found a large market for it to be used in the construction of new highways.

The family has made its home here continuously since that time with the exception of one interval of five years when this business took him to Kouts, Indiana, where straw was more abundant and more fertile market for a time existed.

He lived a full and busy life but not a fast one. He accepted religion in his early years and was later baptized in the Baptist Church, his letter is recorded with the Hillcrest Baptist Church. He lived for his family, his relatives, his friends and his work. One seldom needed a doctor in his presence for his cheerful conversion left little room for aches or pains, and often made you wonder how one who had lived so long and who himself had ailed so severly could not only bury his own gloom and internal ailments, but could actually chide others into a more jolly mood until their condition was at least temporarily forgotten.

The first shadow which crossed his brow and stole some of the sunshine from his smile was the coming of the war and the snatching by it of so many members of the family into active service, finally taking his baby and ... The rest of the pages are missing.

Cecil Parrott, Death March survivor, dies.

He survived the infamous Bataan Death march, and endured savage beatings, bouts of dysentery and starvation as a Japanese POW in World War II.

But Cecil Waldo Parrott lost his final battle The Bellevue resident did not live to win reparations for himself and thousands of other POWs forced to work without compensation for Japanese companies.

Parrott died Thursday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Seattle. He was 83.

Though he endured 1,228 days in captivity, as one of 70,000 U.S. and Filipino soldiers who surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942, Parrott maintained his faith in
family and refused to hate his captors.

He was a gentle man who "loved the Japanese people," said his son-in-law David Andress of North Bend. "He was very forgiving of the Japanese people, because he knew it wasn't the people (who caused the suffering), it was the military."

Born in Mount Vernon on July 20, 1920, Parrott spent his boyhood moving from town to town in Idaho as his carpenter father sought work during the Great Depression.

He met his future wife, Ruby, at a vocational school in Weiser, Idaho. They would marry in 1947, after the war ended.

Parrott enlisted in 1940, and spent more than a year stationed in the Philippines before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army Signal Corps when the Japanese captured the Bataan peninsula.

More than 10,000 soldiers would not survive the resulting Death March, victims of exhaustion, thirst, disease and horrific treatment by their captors.

"If you had a ring that was so tight on your finger, because your finger had swelled up some, they would cut your finger off. That's how cruel they were," Parrott told the
Journal in an interview in 2001.

"I saw men bayoneted for trying to get a drink. I decided that dying of thirst was preferable," he said.

He credits a cook from the Japanese army with helping him survive and enabling him to see the enemy as individuals. He and other stragglers were stopped by the cook, who shared what little he has --- some boiled rice, sweet tea and one mackerel, cut into five pieces. the tea, the only clean water he had during the march, probably saved his life, Parrot told the Journal.

Surviving the nearly 70-mile march was no guarantee of surviving the war. By late 1942, in Camp O'Donnell in Luzon, dysentery, beriberi and starvation had carved 68 pounds from his 165-pound frame. He was sent to "Zero Ward," a crawl space under the barracks where men were left to die.

Every morning, Parrott would wake up with yet another dead man next to him. "I noticed that the night before a guy died, he would talk about how abandoned he felt, how he was convinced no one cared, that his family had forgotten him," Parrott told the Journal in May 1995. "Not me. I would get home to my family."

Parrott simply refused to give up. He weighted 96 pounds when he was liberated from a Japanese work camp on August 19, 1945.

Parrott moved to Bellevue in 1955 and worked as an engineer for Boeing until the layoffs of the early 1970s, son-in-law Andress said. then he opened his own general contracting business before retiring a decade ago.

He was known for helping veterans and for putting in grabbars for seniors for a minimal charge, just to help out, Andress said. "He was a giving person," Andress said.

The war brought Parrott a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and other medals, but left him with nightmares and digestive problems throughout his life, Andress said.

He testified against some of the prison guards after the war, "but he was able to separate individual Japanese people," Andress said.

"We should never forget the sacrifices Americans have made in war," Parrott told the Journal in 1955." but we also should remember the point of it all: peace and brotherhood
    among all peoples."

In 1999, Parrott joined a class-action lawsuit filed in California seeking damages against present-day Japanese corporations Mitsui and Mitsubishi, owners of the mining companies that used the labor of 20,000 POWs during the war. They have not been compensated to this day. "What's sad," Andress said, "is at the end he was very
    upset" about that.

Parrott is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruby of Bellevue; daughters Cheryl (and David) Andress of North Bend and Marcy (and Tm) Davis of Yakima; and five grandchildren.
Services have not yet been scheduled.

    152. Joseph Franklin Parrott Jr. (Joseph Franklin "Frank" Sr.5, William Edward4, Evan S.3, John Jr.2, John Sr.1) was born on 22 Jul 1916 in Hagerman, Gooding Co., Idaho and died on 4 Jul 2005 in Boise, Ada Co., Idaho at age 88.

General Notes: Joseph F. Parrott; Our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend,

Joseph F. Parrott, 88, of King Hill, Idaho, went to live for eternity with his Heavenly Father on July 4, 2005, surrounded by his caring family.

Joe began life in a small white house on the Brailsford Ranch outside of Hagerman, Idaho, in 1916. He rode to school in the covered wagon school bus with a camp stove in the winter to keep warm. On nice days, the boys could chase skunks on the way to school so they would be "scent" home. In 1929, after his father's death, Joe quit school and went to work to help the family, first milking 25 cows, then at age 16, he rounded up Mustangs on the Bruneau Desert. In 1936 Joe went to the Bray ranch, met and
    married Blanche Bray.

Joe worked for the CCC and the shipyard in Seattle. After Blanche's death, Joe returned to Idaho to do what he loved most, work with the cows and horses. Joe brought his new wife, Una, with him. Joe wanted to give his family more, so he packed up and moved to Colorado then on the (to) San Antonio, Texas, where he worked in construction for 11 years. After the four children married, he returned to his beloved mountains and cows.

His grandchildren spent many summers learning the lifestyle of a "true cowboy". Long hours, hot days, miles of wilderness, but with the love of their grandpa. Joe's motto, "IF you do a job, do it the best you can." The wake up call was always "Daylight in the swamp," even though the sun was not up! So with groans, but few complaints, they would eat their sourdough hot cakes, eggs, bacon and get their horses ready and head out before sunrise.

Joe's motto, "You can never catch a Parrott in bed when the sun is up."

General Notes: MERIDIAN -- Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend, went to rest for eternity in the loving arms of his Heavenly Father at the earthly age of 58 on Jan. 19, 2005, at his job site in Boise, Idaho.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, 5400 Fairview Ave., Boise. Cremation will follow the service.
Richard was born in Wendell, Idaho, on May 18, 1946, to Joseph Franklin and Una Mary Parrott. For 11 years, he lived the life of a cowboy in the hills of Idaho. He never forgot and he continued to love and live by the ethics of the "Cowboy Way." He rode trailing cows from the young age of 2 - still in diapers. His family moved to Colorado when his father was made construction superintendent of the U. S. Air Force Academy. They continued to travel until settling in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from East Central High School and he completed one year of college at San Antonio Community College. Richard also completed a four year apprenticeship in carpentry to become a journeyman carpenter. He was a master finish carpenter and a perfectionist who worked in his given trade until his death.

He met his wife, Margo, a "Texas girl," at the age of 16 and they were married on March 14, 1965. He could never get Idaho out of his system and he moved his family back in 1977. While in Idaho, they were blessed with two "Idaho" children to compliment their two "Texas" children.

Some of his most enjoyable times were when he and his brother, Ted, were in the roping arena, roping calves at the many brandings they attended. He seldom missed and his wife, "a city girl," was in awe of his roping and riding abilities.

Richard could also repair anything, including his children's vehicles, the ice maker, the garbage disposal, etc. His family depended greatly on him. He loved his family more than human words can describe.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He taught his children respect for guns and for other people's property. His greatest achievement was when he killed a bull elk the first time he went bow hunting. As he got older he enjoyed going with the boys, and got more pleasure out of taking pictures, hunting arrowheads and other Native American artifacts.

Richard's faith in God and love of his Heavenly Father permeated into all areas of his life. He held many priesthood offices and at his death was an apostle in the Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is survived by his wife, Margo of Meridian; son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Gina of Kuna; daughter and fiance', Toni of Meridian and Scott Yates of Harmon, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Charlene (Charlie) of Meridian; and daughter, Bethany (Bethy) Parrott of Meridian; his father, Joseph Franklin Parrott Jr. and his wife, Helen of King Hill, Idaho; his sisters, Elora (Wayne) Harmon of San Antonio, Texas, and Leslie Parrott of Boise; a brother, Ted (Elana) Parrott of Emmett; his granddaughters, Devry and Alex Parrott of Kuna and Bentley Parrott of Meridian; and many nieces and nephews.

    John Blackburn Parrott (1931 - 2006)

our Lord on Feb. 8, 2006.
John was born in Kentucky on Jan. 5, 1931, to Arch and Fannie Parrott as the youngest of 12 children. John was a beloved husband, dad and "Papa" to his grandchildren. To know John was to love John.

John proudly served in the Army during the Korean War. On leave, when visiting family in Camarillo, John found the love of his life in a girl named Cherry Horton, a lifelong resident of Camarillo. John and Cherry married in 1952 and settled down in Camarillo, where they happily raised their four boys. If you are a longtime resident of Camarillo, you were probably touched in some way by John. He may have encouraged you or your son in his 25 years as a Little League coach, shook your hand and greeted you with a smile at church, cheered alongside you at a Camarillo High School sports event, or exchanged stories and life lessons with you as he cut your hair at his barber shop on Ventura Boulevard over the past 52 years.

John's greatest joys in life were spending time with his children and grandchildren. He taught his family that happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have, and that the greatest gift you can give someone is the gift of your time. If you knew John, you knew what it was life to be accepted for who you are, to be truly listened to, cared about, and what it felt like to be deeply loved. John will be remembered best with his family around him as he held up his hand with the I love you sign.

He is survived by his wife, Cherry; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Heidi, Steve and Kathryn, Pat and Debbie, and Mitch and Susan; grandchildren, Ryan, Randi, Kourey, John, Nicholas and Emma; and sister, Evelyn McCain.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at Camarillo Church of Christ, 515 Temple Ave., Camarillo. A graveside service will follow at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo, and then a gathering back at the church.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Camarillo Church of Christ.

Assisting the family with funeral arrangements is Pierce Bros. Griffin Mortuary, 1075 E. Daily Drive, Camarillo; phone 1-805-482-2711.
