This New England family, though small compared to other Parrott families in the US, has given rise to a disproportionate number of prominent Americans. These are John Fabyan Parrott, a member of the House of Representatives and then Senator; Enoch Greenleaf Parrott, a rear admiral; and Robert Parker Parrott, inventor of the Parrott gun.

  • More information on Robert Parker Parrott

The family tree has not been fully reconstructed, and there may be living Parrott descendants. This is an attempt to collate the available information, so as to aid future research.

    ADMIRAL PARROTT DEAD

    A LONG PUBLIC LIFE ENDED
FOUND DEAD BY ATTENDANTS AT THE FIFTH-AVENUE HOTEL
A SKETCH OF HIS LIFE AND PUBLIC SERVICES

Rear-Admiral Enoch G. Parrott, of the United States Navy, died very suddenly of heart disease last evening at the Fifth-Avenue Hotel, where he has been staying since January Last. He was a native of Portsmouth, N.H., where was born Nov. 27, 1815. His father was a well-to-do merchant of Portsmouth. When only 16 years of age he was appointed a midshipman in the United States Navy, and attached to the schooner Boxer, of the Brazil squadron, in which his first cruise was made. In 1834 he was transferred to the sloop Natchez, of the same squadron. He was attached to the Navy-yard at Boston in 1837, and on the 15th of June in that year was promoted to the rank of Passed Midshipman. Three years later he was engaged in surveying duty on board the brig Consort. On the 8th of September, 1841, he was commissioned a Lieutenant, and was ordered under Commodore Perry. With the latter, the Lieutenant was engaged in the attacks on Beraly and other towns on the Western coast of Africa in December, 1843. In these operations Lieut. Parrott was always one of the leading parties. During this year he served on the sloop Saratoga. From 1846 to 1848 he was attached to the Pacific Squadron on the frigate Congress. The latter vessel did excellent service during the Mexican war, an Lieut. Parrott, with the other officers and the crew, received the thanks of the President and the Naval Department. While serving in the Congress the Lieutenant accompanied Fremont on the famous expedition from Monterey to Los Angeles, where there was a slight engagement. He took an active part in the capture of the Guaymas and Mazatlan, and in two preliminary engagements at the latter place. At the close of the war with Mexico Lieut. Parrott was ordered to the receiving ship Boston, in which he served until 1852, when he was transferred to the sloop St. Louis, of the Mediterranean Squadron. The next two years were spent on the St. Louis, and the following two years in the Pacific Squadron, where the Lieutenant served on the sloop St. Marys. In 1857 and 1858 he was ordered to duty at the Naval Observatory, Washington, and in 1859 was assigned to special duty. The veteran Lieutenant received his well-earned promotion to the rank of Commander in April, 1861, serving as such during the civil war which followed. Commander Parrott was in active service through the war, and took part in many important engagements. He was with the expedition with destroyed the Navy-yard at Norfolk in the same month of his promotion. At the time of the capture of the rebel privateer Savannah by the brig Perry, he was in command of the latter vessel. For his successful courage in the sea-fight the Commander received the commendation of the department. From the latter part of the 1861 to 1864 he was in command of the steamer Augusta, doing admirable work in various naval operations. The Augusta participated in the battle of Port Royal, under Rear-Admiral Dupont, and afterward, Jan. 13, 1863, engaged the rebel rams at the time of their sortie from Charleston. During this battle the Augusta was under the fire of the rebel batteries in Charleston Harbor. During 1864 he was in command of the iron-clad Cononicus, of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. While in command of the Canonicus he took part in the engagement with Howlett's Battery and the iron-clads on James River, June 21, 1864. He was also in the subsequent engagement with the same battery. In December, 1864, and January, 1865, he commanded the iron-clad Monadnock, which took part in the attacks on Fort Fisher, under Rear-Admiral Porter. Subsequently, under Rear-Admiral Dahlgren, he was present at the surrender of the Charleston. At the close of the war Commander Parrott was assigned to the command of the receiving-ship Boston, where he remained until 1868. On July 25, 1866, he received his commission as Captain. In 1869 he was placed in charge of the Navy-yard at Portsmouth, N.H., and in the next year, 1870, was promoted to be Commodore. He was commandant at the Mare Island Navy-Yard in 1871, and was assigned to the Asiatic Station I 1872. He was commissioned as Rear-Admiral Nov. 8, 1873.

For several years past the Rear-Admiral had been in the habit of spending his Winters at the Fifth-Avenue Hotel, in this City, and his Summers at his old home in Portsmouth. He was never married. He was a cousin of Robert Parker Parrott, the inventor of the celebrated Parrott gun. He leaves one sister, who resides at the home in Portsmouth, and brother, who is at present in Chicago. His health had not been good for some years past. He was affected with partial paralysis off the side and limbs, and for the last two years he moved about with difficulty, and showed symptoms of mental decay. It is said that he was in the incipient sates of softening of the brain, and had been dying gradually. At the same time he was fond of being about, and whenever he could he attended walking matches and exhibitions of athletic sports. Yesterday evening at about 6 o'clock, he went into the toilet-room at the hotel, and not coming out for over half an hour, one of the servants went after him. He was found in a sitting posture, with his head bent over his breast. The servant immediately informed the head hall-man, Mr. Morgan, who had the Admiral removed to his room and laid in bed, and sent after his physician, Dr. Pensely. When the Doctor arrived and examined the Admiral, he pronounced him dead. Mr. Morgan thinks the Admiral was still living when he first saw him. Coroner Woltman was summoned, and at 10 o'clock he held an inquest over the body in the Admiral's room. The jury returned a verdict of death of disease of the heart. On Thursday he complained of feeling neuralgic pains in the region of the heart, and is supposed that the paralysis had reached that organ when his death occurred. His relatives were immediately notified of his death by telegraph. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been definitely decided upon. The body will be removed to Portsmouth for internment, and it is probable there will be no funeral services in this city.
